“Tuck That Shirt In” Cast and Credits
“Tuck That Shirt In” is emblematic of a school’s turnaround. The music video is the culmination of innovative
initiatives in which Queens, NY Intermediate School 109 rose from the next-to-last to one of the top middle schools
in Queens, as evidenced by improved attendance, decreased violence, an 11.9% increase in reading scores and
an 8.5% increase in math scores. All told, more than 50 teachers, 250 students and 75 parents from I.S. 109
participated in the writing, production, performance, presentation and promotion of “Tuck That Shirt In”.
The song and music video were aligned with and infused through every academic area in the school. In honor of
“Tuck That Shirt In,” the school has engaged in such projects as:
o A film class in which aspiring filmmakers prepared for the music video and a making-of
documentary
o A literature class in which students produced DVD-sized poetry books based on the project
o A math class that used scenarios based on tucking that shirt in
o A history project in which students examined the history of rap and hip-hop and wrote essays about
what would happen if the “Tuck That Shirt In,” video were sent into a time capsule in the future.
o A science class in which students compared the workings of a camera to the human eye.
th
o An economics class in which the 8 grade class formed a business plan and spreadsheets on how
best to distribute and market the DVDs and CDs
o Students are involved in the outreach and publicity
