JBHA Science 9
Mr. Darwin
Evolution and You
You have studied and explored the life and times of Charles Darwin and his
theory of Evolution. Use the following to develop a comprehensive summary of this unit.
You will need to do all work on line, respond to the directions and submit to me your
final work by attaching your work to an email to rdemuro@jbha.orgl. The ‘answer sheet’
will be keyed in with your responses and you may add images found from provided links.
Your model or illustration will be turned in to me personally for step #6 below on
November 2 or sooner.
Introduction This theory shows a timeline to scale of the events
we believe occurred on planet earth. What is the evidence for this evolution?
Who was Charles Darwin and how did his Theory on the Origin of Species
change modern biology? What examples from the Galapagos Islands helped
Darwin to formulate his Theory? How does the evolutionary process work? Is
life on earth evolving today? How can the evolutionary history of an organism be
shown on a phylogenetic tree? How might humans evolve in the future?
In this webquest, you will be exploring these questions to gain a greater
understanding of evolution past, present and future. You will use what you have
already learned about biodiversity to understand the biology behind evolution.

minutes long showing the formation theory and send me the link you used.}
The Process
The first step is to learn about evolution. To do this, you will be exploring
different forms of evidence of evolution, the main components of Darwins Theory
of Evolution by Natural Selection, and modern phylogenetic trees through online
tutorials. As you learn about evolution, record what you have learned in your
notebook using questions in your Evolution Webquest Worksheet. Once you
have finished all of the tutorials, go on to the activity in step 2.
1.. Darwin Tutorial List and describe several facts from these links
2. Evidence of Evolution Tutorial describe A-E below
a Describe examples of fossil record
b. What are homologous structures?
c. Vestigial structures are what?
d. How is DNA compared between species?
e. How are vertebrates similar?
f. Show how the Galapagos Finches and the Peppered Moth are
examples of modern evolution.
3. Classification and Phylogenetic Tree Tutorial - Explain how the Classifications
are shown (a plug in may be required) and the parts of the Phylogenetic Tree.
4. To further explore how natural selection works, go do this Online
Evolution Activity.
5. Explore this link and describe the Tree of Life- any words you are not familiar
with you are to look up (dictionary.com or other reference):
Geologic Time
6. Design a fictitious organism (future human or organism)
and tell its evolutionary story.
1. Build a model or draw a picture of your organism.
2.Then, in a report or power point presentation, describe in detail the habitat
that it lives in and the habitat that it's ancestors have lived in.
3. List 5 adaptations that the organism has developed to help it survive
along with an explanation of why these adaptations have occurred.
4. Describe the natural selection process that has occurred to help produce
the animal, with evidence for its evolution.
5. Incorporate Darwin's 4 main ideas in your explanation.
