Audacity Quick Start Guide
Audacity is a software program for recording and editing sounds. Start Audacity by
going to Start> Programs> Productivity Folder and click on Audacity.
The Audio Control Toolbar buttons are shown in the graphic above. Students will use
the Play, Record and Stop buttons for recording their audio files. The graphic below
describes the function of all of the Audio Control Buttons. Some of these buttons will be
used for other functions in Audacity.
Making a Recording - Make sure users have plugged microphones into the pink
input jack in the back of the computer. Users should check to make sure that the
sound is not muted on the computer. If the sound is muted, uncheck the mute box by
clicking on the Volume icon in the System Tray.

Make a sample recording by clicking on record and speaking into the microphone.
Click the stop button and your audio track has been recorded. Graphic below shows a
sample audio track. Playback - Users should click the Playback Button to listen to
their recording. Recorded audio will be displayed on the Audio Track.

Exporting the Created Audio File
Users should click on File > Export as MP3. Type in a name for the file when the Save
MP3 dialogue box appears. Click OK when the Edit the ID3 tags for the MP3 file
appears. Now check the location where the sample file was saved. Double click the
MP3 file to hear the recorded file playback. Delete the sample file. Now record your
audio file for class and save it where you are instructed to save.
(Teachers should create a folder(s) in the _Collaborative Folder on the G:\Drive
and instruct users to save their work there with a unique name. Example: Jose Roca
should save his file with the name joseroca The extension mp3 will automatically be
added to the saved file.)
Note: If users are prompted for the
location of the file LAME MP3 Encoder,
they should click yes and navigate to the
location below. Click on the LAME MP3
Encoder Folder and click open.
