WELCOME: A warm welcome today to our Area Dean, the Revd David Ridley, who is our guest

preacher on this our Dedication Festival. This present Church building of SS Peter and Paul, Charlton-in-

Dover, was consecrated on the actual Feast of S Alphege, April 19th 1893, by Dr George Rodney Eden,

Bishop of Dover. Today we give thanks for those who were responsible for building our church and for

those who have cared for it, and who have worked and worshipped here down the years. We also give

thanks for the life and witness of the Martyr Archbishop Alphege.

THANKS!! Fr Colin writes: My sincere thanks to Fr Stewart Carolan-Evans for standing in last

Sunday. I had arranged for Fr Roger Harley to take last Sunday’s Masses, but after I had gone away last

weekend, Fr Roger developed raging toothache and ended up having an emergency appointment in

hospital in Thanet, but not before he contacted David Ridley who arranged for Fr Stewart to take the

Sunday services. Fr Stewart is back with us again in November, when he will be preaching and

concelebrating on All Saints’ Sunday.

ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING: The annual parochial church meeting takes place in the hall

next Sunday immediately after a shortened 10am Parish Mass. At the meeting the churchwardens for the

coming year will be elected, together with the members of the Parochial Church Council for the coming

year. There are nomination forms at the back of church for wardens and PCC members. Please ensure

that anyone you nominate is willing to stand for election!

CONFIRMATION: A reminder that the Deanery confirmation takes place at Buckland on

Wednesday June 11th. Our confirmation classes start on Tuesday at 4.30pm in the Lady Chapel. We have

ten candidates so far – adults and young people. If you wish to confirmed this year, this is positively your

last chance!! Please see Fr Colin immediately after Mass. In confirmation, Christians become full

members of the church and have the joy and delight of being able to receive the Sacrament of the Body and

Blood of Our Blessed Lord in the bread and wine at the altar. If you are a regular worshipper at our

church there is absolutely no reason why you should not be confirmed!!

WALSINGHAM 2008

By popular demand, this year’s parish pilgrimage to Walsingham has been booked

since last year! It will be from September 16th to the 18th and will yet again be a mid-

week pilgrimage. We have booked 20 places. The cost will be just under £90 for full

board for the three days of the pilgrimage. More details from Cynthy Sinclair. If you

are interested, please sign up on the yellow sheet at the back of church.

NORA SMITH R.I.P.

You will sorry to hear that a long-time Charlton worshipper, Nora Smith has died. She was 81 and had

been living at S Mary’s Residential Home in Dover. Up to a year or so ago, Nora was a regular at the 10

o’clock Parish Mass on a Sunday and despite having to use a wheelchair and despite her sight problems,

she was always cheerful. Nora’s funeral takes place at Barham Crematorium at 11.20 tomorrow morning.

THANKSGIVING SERVICES

Today and next Saturday there are thanksgiving services for the lives of two well-loved Charlton figures.

This afternoon we shall be remembering Fr Jonathan Cooper, Curate of Charlton in the 1970s. This

afternoon’s service takes place at three o’clock. And on Saturday, also at three pm, there is a Service of

Thanksgiving for the life of Elizabeth Giles, the wife of our former director of music, Peter.

ASCENSION DAY

st

A reminder that Ascension Day is a week next Thursday – that’s May 1 . There will be a Sung Mass at

7.30pm and with the lighter evenings I would hope for a good turnout. Ascension Day is one of the major

feasts of the church, but is all too often neglected because it falls on a weekday. So far I have resisted the

temptation to follow some parts of the Church of England (and the Roman Catholic Church) which

observe Ascension Day on the nearest Sunday. However, if attendance this year doesn’t come up to

expectations, next year there will either be just a morning Said Mass on the actual day, or we shall keep

Ascension on the nearest Sunday.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY

MAY 24th is a big day for Charlton. At lunchtime we are hosting the Annual Provincial Festival of the Guild

of Servants of the Sanctuary. There is a Festival Mass to which we welcome the former Bishop of Rochester and

of Durham, the Right Reverend Michael Turnbull. After lunch, the Guild Office will be sung and there will be

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. At 7.30 in the evening we welcome the Pharos Choir for a concert of

sacred and secular music. Tickets, price £5, can be obtained from Penny Brown.

DURING EASTERTIDE THE ANGELUS AT THE END OF MASS IS REPLACED BY THE

REGINA CAELI WHICH IS SUNG TO THE TUNE OF “JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN TODAY.”

Joy to thee, O Queen of heaven alleluia. He whom thou was meet to bear, alleluia.

As he promised hath arisen, alleluia. Pour for us to God thy prayer, alleluia.

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. All: For the Lord has risen indeed, alleluia.

Priest: O God, who by the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, you have brought joy to the whole

world: grant that by the help of His mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life, through

Christ our Lord. Amen

Your prayers are asked for:
