WORLD CLASS – through people, technology and dedication
User Experience / Centered Design & Development
• This is one important kind of Knowledge Based
Development.
• Orientation towards the human aspect of all product
and services development, i.e. to be “user-centered”
instead of “technical-oriented”.
• Describe how the user will experience the final product
or system and then we design it according to this!
• Universities teach how to design, construct and build
things and also how to manage projects. But
important knowledge is only found in real-life, i.e. in
the close co-operation between the company and the
market (read: the user).
• “Make things that we and the user are proud of!”

The change of Innovation
Det store problemet for mange
bedrifter er at innovasjon har
forandret seg drastisk de siste
ti årene. Tidligere handlet det
nesten bare om å utvikle nye
produkter, og til nød tjenester.
Nå dreier det seg om noe langt
mer omfattende; å gi kunden
en merverdi, ifølge Insead-
professoren.

Low Electric car sales
• The market for elcars in Norway has not grown as fast as many has
expected. In 2010, many thought that about 3000 elcars would be
sold, but only 680 were actually sold.
• For 2011, the established elcar manufacturers Think, Mitsubishi and
Peugeot expects to sell between 400 and 800 elcars each and the
sales for newcomers are estimated to be even lower.
• Some say that the reason for this low sales volume is that elcars are
far more expensive that fossilcars.

High iPad sales
• March 31.2010: Apple sells more than two million iPads in less than
two months
• June 23, 2010: iPad sales hit the three million mark yesterday, a
whopping three million in 80 days, making the iPad look like one of
the most successful new product launches in recent history.
• iPod -> iTunes
• iPhone -> Apps

Context & Challenge
• We are on the Bridge and in the Engine Control
Room.
• We make Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC)
systems for manoeuvring, navigation and control
of vessels.
• We are among the top world-leaders within the
area of maritime electronics for the professional
market.
• We realise that to stay and also grow in this
market, it is not enough only to have the world’s
best products (from an objective level, technology
and functionality), we have to provide added
value to the customer and user as well
(subjective level).
How do we meet this challenge?

The heart beat problem:
• The user shall at any time experience that he is ‘on top of the
situation’ and that he has control.
• Both during normal situation, but especially during alarm and
failure conditions.
• The stress level peaks when severe failures occur. It is then of
utmost importance to gain time, i.e. the user must be supplied
with the correct and relevant information and the possible
corrective actions must be clearly and intuitively presented.
/ 20 / 4-Feb-11
How to bring the heart beat down
• Change of focus from boxes, systems and equipment to
function, information and operation, i.e. change from technical-
centered towards user-centered thinking.
• Adaptation of user functions and information to operational
context.
• Focus on the 20% of the functions used 80% of the time, i.e.
make things simple and intuitive.
• The effects:
• Safer Operation
• Optimal Situation Awareness
• Improved User Performance and Satisfaction
- We make people improve their positions

Situation Awareness & User-Centred Design
• Situation Awareness is the key to achieving a user-centred design
• Situation Awareness is the engine that drives the train for decision
making and performance in complex, dynamic systems.

Centered Design. Endsley, Bolte, Jones.

Situation Awareness (SA)
• Basically, SA is being aware of what is happening around you and
understanding what that information means to you now and in the future.
• The formal definition of SA breaks down into three separate levels:
• Level 1 – perception of the elements in the environment
• Level 2 – comprehension of the current situation, and
• Level 3 – projection of future status

• En PSV eid av et Bergensrederi er i
Aberdeen for å laste noen
containere med utstyr som skal til
en av oljeplattformene i Nordsjøen.
Etter lossing av containerne, skal
båten ta om bord to containere fra
plattformen og deretter seile over til
Bergen. Denne historien skal
illustrere de fleste fasene av
totaloperasjonen og hvordan
Kongsbergs utstyr benyttes.
