Dede Koswara, an Indonesian man known as "The Tree Man of Java" has undergone surgery to remove over 4 pounds of wart growths that look like tree bark from his face, arms, and legs. The 37-year-old fisherman was believed to have been originally infected with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) when he cut his knee as a teenager. A rare genetic fault left his body unable to fight the virus, which resulted in the growths. A segment featuring his story was aired on The Discovery Channel on November 15, 2007.
