Policies for AACC Laptop Computer Use in Truxal Library Truxal Library is pleased to provide laptop computers to learners for loan within the library. The computers are configured to connect to the campus network through wireless technology. Location Laptops must remain on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Library building. Current AACC students presenting a valid Truxal Library card, and valid photo id at time Eligibility of check-out who have no outstanding fines, holds or overdue items on their library account. Check out at the Circulation Desk for use within the library. Return to a staff person at Borrowing the Circulation Desk at or before the time due, with the laptop power ON. Borrowers Procedures must wait while staff verifies the condition of the laptop. Three hour period on a first come, first served basis. Expected battery life is Loan Duration approximately 3 hours, although some high battery-use applications may wear down the battery more quickly. None. Subject to availability, borrower may be able to check out a different laptop upon Renewals return. $20.00 per hour. In other words, returning a laptop 24 hours overdue would Overdue Fines result in a $460.00 overdue fine! $50.00 fine [in addition to hourly overdue fees] for removing a laptop from the Library. Other Charges Repair or replacement cost of the computer (up to $2,000.00) for lost, stolen, vandalized or destroyed laptops. Material printed from laptops may be picked up at the “Laptop Printer”, located across Printing from the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor of the Library. All files should be stored on a floppy diskette or other medium. Such items are available for sale at the College Bookstore, but are not available to purchase in the Library. The Saving Data library assum es no responsibility for files stored on the hard drive or the recovery of files accidentally left in the hard drive after the computer has been returned. All files left on the laptop will be deleted at the Library’s discretion. Users are expected to have working knowledge of MS Windows systems and MS Office software prior to borrowing a laptop. Assistance with this software can be obtained in the TLC, but the laptop must remain in the Library. Immediately report any damage or malfunction to Circulation Desk staff. Log on using the username and password located on the keyboard. When you finish using the laptop, click the “Start” button at the bottom left of the screen, then Basic select “Log Off”, then click “OK”. Instructions Do not turn OFF the power or select RESTART. If you do, you will need to Help! simultaneously press the CTRL, ALT and DELETE keys when it freezes at the message “initializing TCP/IP via DCP” during the start-up sequence. CTRL-ALT -DELETE will make the machine reboot successfully. If you lose your internet connection while the power is on, press the button with the satellite dish image at the top of the keyboard in order to reconnect to the wireless network. Laptop Borrower Responsibilities • Borrowers must: o Complete a Use and Liability Agreement in which they acknowledge responsibility for any laptop computer they borrow. o Provide a valid Truxal Library card AND a valid photo ID. Laptops will not be distributed without both forms of identification at the time of each transacti on. o Resolve all outstanding fines, holds or other overdue items on their library record prior to check out. • Borrowers are responsible for: o Returning the laptop in the same working condition in which it was issued. [Laptops are examined by staff before checkout and after return.] o Full replacement cost if the borrowed laptop computer is lost or stolen, or is damaged beyond the cost of repair, as determined by the College. o Repair cost, as determined by the College, if the computer is damaged. • Borrowers should never leave the laptop computer unattended. • Borrowers should never lend the laptop to a third party, as any damage or loss incurred while a laptop is checked out is the sole responsibility of the borrower. • Borrowers should store all files on a floppy dis kette or other medium. Such items are available for sale at the College Bookstore, but are not available to purchase in the Library. The library assumes no responsibility for files stored on the hard drive or the recovery of files accidentally left in the hard drive after the computer has been returned. All files left on the laptop will be deleted at the Library’s discretion. • Laptops will be battery powered. All laptops will be fully charged at the time of check-out. The library assumes no responsibility for files lost due to battery failure. Expected battery life is approximately 3 hours. • Borrowers may only use laptop computers within Truxal Library [on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Library building] and may not take them to the 1st floor or out of the building. • Borrowers acknowledge that if a computer is not returned, it will be considered theft of AACC property and appropriate disciplinary and/or legal action will be taken by AACC to recover it. • Borrowers may check out one laptop at a time on their account. • Borrowers acknowledge that Truxal Library is not responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to, or from, a user's floppy disk or other storage medium. • Borrowers may not load or install personal software on the laptop. • Borrowers acknowledge that laptop use in the Library is subject to the College’s “Computer and Electronic Communication Access and Usage at AACC” policy. Violations of this policy will result in the loss of laptop borrowing privileges.
