Unit 5 IP
Final Copy of Research Paper
LAST MINUTE HELP!!
In these instructions you will find the best the web has to offer in terms
of formatting the final version of your research essay. Because Unit 5 IP
is an essay that includes sources, proper in-text citations and a correct
"References" page are essential for a good grade:
A Brief Primer to Citing Sources in APA Style
Each time you use a source in your paper, you must cite it twice: once
as an in-text citation and again on the references page. The in-text
citation is abbreviated (Author, year). The full citation for the source
appears only on your references page at the end of your paper.
In-Text Citations
(1) When you use a quotation from a source, you must provide an in-
text citation.
(2) When you put a source into your own words (summary), you must
provide an in-text citation.
In-Text Citation for a Quote From A Source
Original Text (from How the Media Exploits Women by Adele, 1999)
“Deaths from colon cancer occur twice as often in women as in men,
but the media has made it seem that breast cancer is the number one
killer of women.”
Quotation in Your Paper:
According to Adele (1999), "Deaths from colon cancer occur twice as
often in women as in men, but the media has made it seem that breast
cancer is the number one killer of women" (p. 12).
Please note three things:
1. A phrase such as "According to ..." or “Adele (1999) wrote,“ is
always used to introduce a quote.
2. The author’s last name and year in parentheses is the in-text
citation and refers to an entry on the list of sources on the last
page of your paper.
3. The period for the sentence goes after the parentheses for the
in-text citation.
In-Text Citation for Sources Put Into Your Words (summary)
Original Text (from How the Media Exploits Women by Adele, 1999)
“Deaths from colon cancer occur twice as often in women as in men,
but the media has made it seem that breast cancer is the number one
killer of women.”
Your Summary in Your Own Words:
Although twice as many women die from colon cancer as men, the
media chooses to focus on breast cancer as the main threat to women
(Adele, 1999).
Notice that:
1. From the original source, a few of the same key words were used,
but the source information was put into my own phrases.
2. No quote marks are necessary because I used my own phrasing.
3. The in-text citation to the source comes at the end of the
sentence.
“My Source is Not a Book. How Do I Cite It?”
No problem. Same format (Author, year) is used for every type of
source: web site, online encyclopedia, library database, etc. If your
source does not identify an author, use the source’s title in place of the
author’s name.
The “References” Page
Since you are using APA style, the last page of your paper is labeled
"References"--a word which is centered on a page by itself. Citation
machines produce reference formats for you automatically. Be sure to
check the citation against the models in your handbook.
Please use the Bedford Citation machine:

Using APA-Style Headings
You also must label your paper’s main sections with headings. For
example, “Using APA-Style Headings” above in red is a heading.
These headings provide signposts of the paper’s organization. Here is a
handout that shows you how to use APA headings in your paper: How
To Use APA Style Headings (6th Edition).
