Social Norms
Social norms vary among societies. For example, in Romania we would never call one of
our instructors by their first names, but in the US this is widely acceptable.
Another example would be how in Romania it is perfectly acceptable to kiss a woman’s
hand while being introduced. However, this practice seems strange to an American, and is
completely insulting in a country like Turkey.
It is important to understand and respect local cultural norms, even if they seem foreign
to your own values.
