From: Department Management Group

Announcement: Two Health Sciences funded PhD Studentships

Proposals are invited for two PhD studentships as detailed below:
Proposals should address innovative original research which could lead to subsequent grant
funding, and will be challenging but feasible for a PhD student and provide high quality research
training.

Studentship A
This studentship is available to projects within any of the sub themes in the Population Science
Research Theme (Biostatistics; Data to Knowledge; Health Services Research; Clinical
Epidemiology). Collaboration within the sub themes is welcome.

Studentship B
This studentship is available to projects within any of the sub themes in the Population Science
Research Theme (Biostatistics; Data to Knowledge; Health Services Research; Clinical
Epidemiology). However, priority will be given to a project within the Health Services Research sub
theme of the Population Science Theme; an area highlighted as requiring additional PhD students.

Funding available
Both studentships will last for 3 years and cover:

    (i) University full-time PhD Registration Fees at H/EU rates
(ii) (ii) Student Stipend starting at the RCUK rate of £13,590pa
(iii) (iii) £1000pa Research Support Grant and £300pa Travel/Conference allowance

Home and EU students are eligible for these awards, as are International students who have graduated from
one of the Department Masters programmes at Merit or Distinction level.

However, if an international student is appointed the difference between H/EU and International
registration fees MUST be paid by either the student, supervisor, or from another source. The difference will
NOT be covered by the studentship.

                                                                                               October 2011

Selection and Allocation
Proposals will be considered by the Department Management Group working with the Lead Postgraduate

selection process. Proposals will be scored on the following criteria:

    1. Scientific merit
    2. Feasibility as a PhD project
    3. Quality of the research environment and the research training the student will receive
    4. Likelihood of subsequent research grant funding
    5. Fit within overall Department/Theme strategy (i.e. HSR subtheme for Studentship B).
    6. Whether the project is collaborative multi-disciplinary research
    7. Whether additional/matching funding is available
    8. Other relevant factors (e.g. new appointment)

The DMG will make the final selection and will decide whether a project is allocated a Studentship taking
into account the score /ranking based on criteria outlined above.
