we do for them is never wasted." Garrison Keillor

The Girl Scout Program

Girl Scouts – Where Girls Grow Strong

Welcome to the exciting world of Girl Scouts! Girl Scouts is a worldwide

organization (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts

(WAGGGS)) that is dedicated solely to girls where, in an accepting and

nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real

world. In Girl Scouts, girls will discover the fun, friendship and power of

girls together. Through the many enriching experiences provided by Girl

Scouts, they can grow courageous and strong. The Girl Scout Promise and

the Law are the guiding principles upon which Girl Scouting is founded.

The Four Program Goals

The Girl Scout program has four goals for girls that describe the ways girls

grow and develop through their Girl Scout experiences:

1. Develop to their full individual potential.

2. Relate to others with increasing understanding, skill and respect.

3. Develop a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and to provide

the foundation for sound decision-making.

4. Contribute to the improvement of society through the use of their abilities

and leadership skills, working in cooperation with others.

Daisy Girl Scouts -The First Step in a Lifetime Adventure

Just for girls in kindergarten! Daisy Girl Scouts is a great introduction to

Girl Scouting for girls and families. Daisy Girl Scouts earn Daisy Petals by

learning what it means to live by the Girl Scout Law. Daisy Girl Scout

troops learn how to work together as a team and develop values and skills as

they play together and learn about Girl Scouts. Daisy Girl Scouts are named

for Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low, whose nickname was “Daisy”.

Daisy Girl Scouts do not participate in money-earning activities.

Uniforms

The only piece of clothing we are requiring is the Daisy Girl Scout Tunic.

However, there are other items which are needed for the tunic. A complete

list of the items is below. Girls may wear their tunic to school on meeting

days (once they have been invested), or they may bring it in their backpack

and put it on at the start of meetings. Uniform supplies are available for

purchase at the Girl Scout Council Shop. You may want to take your

daughter over to the shop to try on a tunic. Other items, such as t-shirts,

socks, shorts, etc. are also available for purchase.

Daisy Tunic

Size 6-7 $11.50

Size 8-10 $12.00

Daisy GS Troop Numerals $1.25 per digit

Daisy GS Insignia Tab $1.80

Daisy GS Membership Pin $1.40

World Trefoil Pin $2.05

American Flag Patch $1.55

Promise Center & Learning Petals Set $6.50

Please purchase the uniform items listed above by the end of September,

place them in a bag with your daughter’s name on it and hand it in to one of

the troop leaders. The troop leaders will take care of ironing on the

necessary patches and have them ready for our Investiture Ceremony in

October. Girls may not wear their uniforms until they have been invested.

Daisy Girl Scout Promise Center & Learning Petals

When Daisy Scouts have learned the Girl Scout Promise, usually by the time

they are “invested”, they will receive the Girl Scout Promise Center, a patch

that can be placed right in the center of their Daisy Scout tunics. For

learning about each part of the Girl Scout Law, girls will receive a Daisy

Learning Petal (10 petals in all). Each of the ten petals is a different color

and represents understanding of a specific part of the Girl Scout Law. The

petals are placed around the Promise Center in any order determined by each

girl. Since the Promise Center and Learning Petals are packaged/purchased

as a set, we decided that it would be best for the leaders to keep all of the

Promise Center/Learning Petals sets so that they will not be misplaced or

lost. This way we will be able to give out the learning petals to all of the

girls at the same time.

Forms & Fees

Permission Slip Forms

Whenever the Daisy Girl Scout Troop meets outside of the normal meeting

location, a permission slip is required. The permission slip must be

completed and signed prior to the activity.

Health Forms

Each girl is required to fill out a Health Information form. These forms will

be taken with the Daisy Scout Troop on every trip so that in the event of an

emergency, we will have the necessary medical information.

Registration Forms – Girls/Adults

Annual Membership Registration for Girls Scouts of USA $10.00

All girls and adults participating in the Girl Scout movement need to be

registered as members with the Girl Scouts of the USA and pay the $10.00

annual membership fee. If you plan on chaperoning troop activities or

interacting with the troop on a regular basis, the council requires that you

register. The membership registration forms for both girls and adults are

attached to this packet and need to be turned into the troop leader, along with

the membership fee, as soon as possible.

9

Troop Fees

Program Fee $20.00

Daisy Girl Scouts are not allowed to handle money, so they can not bring

dues to meetings. Daisy Girl Scouts do not participate in money-earning

activities, such as selling Girl Scout cookies. The troop is funded solely by

the parents support. Therefore, in order to help defray the costs associated

with Daisy Girl Scout troop activities, such as crafts/supplies/award

certificates, we are requiring a program fee of $20. The fee can be paid all at

once or $10 at time of registration and $10 in January.

Financial Aid

The Gateway Council provides financial assistance to girls and adults who,

for whatever reason, find it difficult to pay for costs associated with Girl

Scout membership and/or activities. A copy of the Financial Grant

Application is included in this packet. If at any time you need to use it,

simply fill it out and send it in directly to the Council office.

SHARE Program (Show Her A Real Experience)

SHARE is the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council’s family giving campaign. It

is a yearly appeal to every Girl Scout for voluntary contributions. These

contributions will help offset the cost of financial assistance for girls in need,

the cost of training, resources and support for troop leaders, camps and

equipment, publications for girls and adults and a wide variety of

challenging activities and innovative programs for girls. SHARE donations

can be made at any time during the year or included on the individual

membership registration forms. For more information about the SHARE

family giving campaign please see the attached flyer.

Volunteers/Ways You Can Help

Girl Scouting is a volunteer organization. Because of your help, our Girl

Scout troops are rich and varied. Without your help, we cannot succeed.

During the course of the year, we will be asking parents for help. We will

need to set up a snack schedule for our meetings, so if anyone is interested in

this job, please see one of the troop leaders. We will also need volunteers to

assist with meetings, especially if some type of craft is involved! If you are

interested in helping out, please see the attached “Ways You Can Help”

form and talk with one of the leaders – we love volunteers!

A successful Girl Scout year depends on cooperative and involved parents.

Here are ten ways that you can make this Girl Scout year GREAT.

Take an hour a week and get involved. You'll become a part of your

members can attest, there's a lot of fun in it for grown ups, too!
