25th Anniversary Celebration of Chartering Service
March 20, 2011
. . . and the young shall see visions,
and the old shall dream dreams . . .
Joel 2:28
Why "Shiloh"?
It had been five weeks since the new Billings West End Church
held it's first worship service and we were being called the "the
church without walls." On October 20, 1985, a potluck dinner was
held at Bonnie and Allen Modroo's, with the purpose of naming
the new Billings West End church. Some of the names that were
considered were:
Prince of Peace UMC - a Biblical name for Jesus out of Isaiah;
speaking both to our concern for inner peace and world peace
St. Mark's UMC - a remembrance that the Gospel readings in the
first year of the church come from the book of Mark
Christ UMC
Holy Spirit UMC
Mt. Sinai UMC
Incarnation UMC - a reference to the fact that God became a
person in Jesus Christ
Resurrection UMC - a reference to the rising of Christ from the
dead, and the new life we find in Jesus
Shiloh UMC - the name of the street in Billings on which the
church would be built but Shiloh also has Biblical connections.
Shiloh was the place where the first temple was built. Shiloh is
also a name for the Messiah, and it says in Genesis 49:10, "until
Shiloh comes again." Shiloh is Hebrew and means peaceful or
tranquil.

Hymn “Harvest Time”
The seed I have scattered in springtime with weeping
And watered with tears and with dews from on high
Another may shout when the harvesters reaping
Shall gather my grain in the sweet by and by
Chorus
Over and over, yes, deeper and deeper
My heart is pierced through with Life’s sorrowing cry,
But the tears of the sewer and the songs of the reaper
Shall mingle together in joy by and by
By and by, by and by, by and by, by and by,
Yes the tears of the sower and the songs of the reaper shall
mingle together in joy by and by
Another may reap what in springtime I’ve planted
Another rejoice in the fruit of my pain,
Not knowing my tears when in summer I fainted
While toiling sad hearted in sunshine and rain
The thorns will have choked and the summer sun blasted
The most of the seed which in springtime I’ve sown
But the Lord who has watched while my weary toil lasted
Will give me a harvest for what I have done
Benediction
Blest by the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian Love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.

In the name of God and in the presence of this congregation I

May it be a place where people come to celebrate the love of God,
and to share that divine love with each other . May it be a place of
learning where the young are educated in the faith . May it be a
place of service as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord . So

There are so many people who have given of themselves
for this church, it is impossible to name and honor them
all . Though they did not seek recognition, we still wish to
thank them deeply for their contributions . For those who
have given of their gifts of time, talent, and the work of their
hands to the building of this church, we give sincere thanks .
To those who have given most generously of their financial
resources as the Lord prospered them, we owe and will
continue to owe them a debt of gratitude . For those who have
continued to remember us in their prayers, we are grateful .
