Matthew Turkington
3rd Year
Chemistry
Bar Steward
What the role entails:
Day to day maintenance of the bar, such as technical issues and stock management
Stringent financial over seeing, including takings and pdqs
Maintain a good working relationship with college staff.
Encourage enthusiasm within the bar staff and committee members
Experience:
Joined Bar Committee at the end of the first term of my first year as resident rep, and
continued in the committee as produce officer.
Worked under the previous three bar stewards, allowing me to gain a better
understanding on the best ways to carry out the role efficiently.
Have also worked in several bars part-time since the age of eighteen, where I have
gained plenty of bar experience and have been given a good insight into how to manage a
bar in an efficient and professional manner.
Ideas:
A weekly quiz in the bar, possibly in conjunction with duck.
More frequent, smaller events, such as movie nights.
Better communication with students, in terms of greater advertising of events, and
feedback on the positives and negatives of the bar.
Continuation of the work started by the current bar steward in regards to the updating
of the various lines of products in the bar.
Why I want to be bar steward:
Since early in my first year, I have been a member of bar committee and have enjoyed
every moment of it. Through the committee, I have had some fantastic experiences and
been a part of one of the most exciting committees in the JCR. In particular, I have had
the opportunity to help organize one of the college’s biggest events, the beer festival,
which was extremely rewarding despite the hard work involved. As a result of this, I
have always wanted to give something back to the bar, and I feel as bar steward, I could
do this by making the bar as good as it can possibly be.
