Michael Hoffman/See3 Media:
How does it relate to your org’s missions. One of the biggest chllenges that Nonproits
have is that ppl doing directservice are disconnected from the orgs that support them.
What video can do is bring to life that orgs are doing. A lot of what NPOs are doing is
closing that gap, we can show you stories, not just tell you abt what we do. Guide dogs
for the blind has volunteers that =train dogs, so they produced training videos to assist in
training. I think abt the truth is that there is not enough of that connecting w/video or
otherwise, many orgs see the work they do as competitors. We are seeing communities
forming around the indivudals who care, ppl who are about the cause are going to find
the materials and the org benefits. When you think about the twestival fundraiser, the ppl
decide where to give the money, not the other way around. We are seeing much more
power in individual, ppl want ot kno what their support is doing, big orgs are being
challenged by smaller more nimble orgs, video is evidence of that.
On do-gooder site, one of the thing that do-gooder has done for nonprofits is showcase
what other orgs are doing and get ideas and understand techniques in video production,
mention video award co sponsored with NTC, it’s a tool to allow orgs to see what other
orgs are doing. Dogooder allows a player platform that is portability, w/out youtube
branding, portability is important, taking the video to where the conversation lives. You
will see a lot of discussion or community happening on a blog, and keep the vid at core,
but allowing the conversation run elsewhere. Bring the video to where the conversation
are already happening. We are not trying to have 10 million visitors. We are tryng to
bring the video
Orgs like: changent, razoo, change.org, bringlight, changingpresent, causes on FB that
are saying that they are going to bring millions of users who will give. All causes don’t
have a lot in common. Change.org saw a bump in traffic when obama launched
change.gov. Care2 has built a community of ppl 10 million over 10 years. They grew at a
steady pace. It’s not going to happen b/c ppl are complicated, and don’t live on 1 sight,
unless I am ultra passionate, I am going to be interested in some content, but not spend
my home space online on one site. Like newspapers are not in ppr biz they are in news
biz. Dogooder is not one of those sites, we are building a set of tools for nonprofit. Some
video watching will be there, some will be portable. A lot of what we are talking abt with
blogs, is users creating the content, when e talk abt video, there is a disconnect and the
content is passive, the next thing is moving interactivity into the world of video
There is a site done by ad council called That’s not cool
http://www.thatsnotcool.com/VideoIndex.aspx example to have real interactivity in
video. Annotations is the functionality, to create links w/in videos, to other youtube
video. DoGooder is working on data capture in the video frame, but you could have the
video embedded, and the comments wont follow if it’s embedded elsewhere. Think about
a video embedded on 10 diff blogs, but comments are portable, you could aggregate
community around a topic, not around a site.
Myfreewillpower.com, a video by Naral, came about around getting a new generation of
ppl who are abt reproductive rights requires a diff toolset. They people don’t have a
reference to roe V. Wade, you have to create new ways of talking about an issue. They
created a site, along w/original video, along w/UGC they had contests, they got spoken
word artists to use their own words around the issue, very diff from historial use of
marketing. They let ppl speak about issues in their own language.
“For us video is not an end, it’s a tool to help orgs achieve a goal. “ (his article btw video
sharing and video hosting) just b/c YouTube has a giant audience doesn’t mean that yr
vid will. Unless you think abt you tube as a social network
Right now, they are using a video host, ir doesn’t have a lot of tools right now, it’s a way
to collect video assets and embed them in diff places. We have a facebook app, if you
want to create a network, you can do it elsewhere, we don’t see the model of trying to get
critical mass around an issue. We are building out more tools, for example, the ability to
sign a petition or sign up for a mailing list from the video. You can have a million views
on your video and not see a blip of traffic on yr site, b/c youtube wants to keep you in
yourtube. If we release the interactivity tools, we can allow nonprofits to for example
donate or join right from the video.users can interact thru same place they saw the video,
click right in.
One of our favorite orgs is Witness, they have a new ED from MTV international one of
the things they are figuring out is mobile. They realized that it’s not just about capturing
the protests on the streets n Tehran, it’s also about teaching ppl to tell good stories.
Example of garbage pickers in India, to tell Indian legislators, to move the ball as a
thoughtful change strategy. Another example is child soldiers, a film abt child soldiers
and what happens to them, witness took this video and shoed it to parents in villages.
They created the Hub, to aggregate human rights video, pulling vid from YT and
uploading video there. Want a place to put video in a safe place, they also do training and
an advocacy strategy.
Contact: Elizabeth Dickenson, could tell me about their Elizabeth@witness.org. 718-

examples for my book)
Not about tools: more abt--What’s yr theory of change, who are you trying to reach
and how are u measuring stats.
YouTube and DoGooder can tell you who watched vids and how much they watched,
not only how many views.
1. Wht are the best examples you can site of a nonprofit creating social change from
a video or video-set?
2. Does the image-sharing community evolve first or do the images form the
community
3. How are these communities organized? Just by subscriptions?
4. How is it different from YouTube/nonprofits? DO they work together? (get
interview with the woman from this org)
5. I did not notice a grouping of cause types, is this in the works?
6. What stories do you have about social change happening or communities being
engaged by mobile video capture?
7. How are the users having conversations w/each other?
8. Are there good examples of Nonprofits using Dogooder.tv to build community,
not just showcase videos?
9. Do these communities go outside of the DoGooder framework to work w/other
tools?
10. Do these image-sharing communities have community managers? Do you find
orgs take them seriously enough to make them a distinct part of an organization's
community-building efforts?
11. It would be easier for these communities to evolve out of mobile uploading. Is
DoGooder going to make this easier?
