College of Technology Graduate Faculty
The purpose of this document is to outline the guidelines, including a formal vetting process, by which
College of Technology faculty may take specific roles in College of Technology graduate education.
For the purposes of this document all degrees are assumed to be earned degrees and not honorary.
1. Chair/Co-Chair PhD Committee† (chair and co-chair require the same minimum requirements in
the event the chair is no longer able to fulfill his/her position.)
PhD and Tenure/tenure track appointment in the college (Assistant Professor passed 3rd year

Notes:
Dissertation chairs and Master's project and thesis chairs are to be from the student's
department.
*Non-Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty (tenure track prior to 3rd year review, Instructional and
research faculty) will require vetting before nomination as a chair/co-chair of a PhD Committee.
The vetting will be done by a committee of Core Graduate Faculty chaired by the Associate
Dean of Graduate Studies and Research. Core Graduate Faculty is a subset of College of
Technology Graduate Faculty that have chaired dissertations in the past and have met other
core faculty requirements per PhD program.

Associate Dean of Graduate Studies

For all instructional assignments, Department chairs assume the responsibility to follow SACS
guidelines when appointing adjunct faculty to teach courses.
**Earned PhD or equivalent is defined as per SACS guidelines and any other relevant
accrediting bodies
***PhD Candidate is defined as a PhD student that has passed qualifying exams, has an
approved dissertation committee and is making satisfactory progress towards completion.
