Curriculum frameworks/Benchmarks:
Essential Questions: Why is it important for us to learn to write business letters? What
is a professional way to correspond with a company that you may have a problem with?
Students Will Know: Students will learn to describe each part of a business letter and
how to correctly format a business letter.
Students Will Be Able To: Students will be able to compose a business letter and know
when to use this format. Students will understand the purpose for writing these types of
letters and their importance.
Setting Up The Lesson: Anticipatory Set: Have you ever purchased a product from a
company and when you got home you realized that it is not what you expected? What
would you do if you called and all you could get was an automated system? Today will
we learn how the business letter can get the information from you to the business you
desire.
Learning Activities: I will be using mostly the presentation method of teaching to
describe the format and parts of a business letter. To do this we will use the SmartBoard
and I will label the business letters as we go. Our activities will progress as follows:
Introduction of a business letter and what it is used for
Discuss and explain parts of a business letter
Discuss format of a business letter
Answer any questions that may come up
Describe Performance Event
o Students will compose a business letter to a school administrator to
describe something that they appreciate or like about our school.
Students will discuss their letters in our wrap-up session
Provision/Adaptation/Modification for Special Needs Students and/or Diverse
Student Populations: Special Education Students will be given a copy of notes if their
modifications require it. Classroom within Classroom teachers will pay special attention
to writing abilities of some students and provide help if needed.
Closure: We will begin by using our wrap-up session. We will use Syncroneyes to put
superior work on the board to use as an example. I will explain to students that our next
lesson will be over personal letters and they will be able to use some knowledge from
today’s lesson on the personal letters lesson.
Assessment/Performance Tasks: The performance task that the students will be
required to do is to write a business letter to a school administrator telling them
something that they feel is beneficial to them. They may also have a suggestion to the
administrator about what can be improved. Students will be expected to use the correct
format and have all parts of a business letter present.
Materials and Resources: Business letter examples to be shown on the SmartBoard.
Students will compose the letters Microsoft Word.
Achievement Target/Objective: The level of mastery that the students are required to
achieve in the class curriculum is 80%. To achieve this level of mastery, students will be
able to construct a business letter of their own using correct format and using all required
parts.
Reflection/Self-Evaluation: I think a strength of my teaching is to be able to explain
exactly what I want them to be able to accomplish. I will need to keep an eye on some
students who may struggle with writing and help them along. I also will want to use
student work to show examples on the SmartBoard of what I think is exemplary.
