Oikon Ltd. - Institute for Applied Ecology business activities range from environmental consultancy
services to provision of integral specialist studies and research in the field of applied ecology. The

company was registered on 17 November 1997 at the Croatian Court of Commerce under
registration number MBS 080183498. Specialties of the company include environmental and nature
protection, sustainable development, forestry and applied forest research, agriculture, ecological
modelling, landscape ecology, geostatistics, remote sensing and GIS. Oikon Ltd. is registered FAO
(Food and Agriculture Organization -UN) consultant organization, under number 41787/3782. Oikon
Ltd. is also Soil Associations – Woodmark representative in Croatia for FSC Certification of forests and
wood processing industry. Oikon Ltd. is a company with forty employees, which encompass the core
of "Know-How" necessary for project and company management. The Company also employs
numerous (more than 200) external consultants from other scientific institutions and academia, both
from Croatia and abroad. Among our employees there are five employees with PhD degree, two with
MSc degree, twenty three postgraduates, two with bachelors of Science degree and seven with high
school. Employee's academic backgrounds are very diverse and interdisciplinary, including nine
biologists/ecologists, nine foresters, one physicist, one mathematician, four landscape architects, one
architect, one civil engineer, one chemists, one geologist, one mechanical engineer, one economist
and one IT expert.
Zdravko Špirić received his Ph.D in Technical Sciences, scientific field Chemical
Engineering from University of Zagreb, Croatia. He is currently the scientific
director of OIKON and Assistant professor at the Department of Environmental
Medicine, The School of Medicine in Rijeka, University of Rijeka, Croatia.
Beginning in 1980, he served with the Croatian oil company at the R&D on the
research of chemical processes in the oil and gas industry. From 1995 until joining
Oikon, he was Environmental Protection Manager for the Exploration and
Production Division. He has more than 20 years of experience in the energy sector
- petroleum industry (production, policy, strategy); oil & natural gas exploration &
production, research and process development, specializing in environmental
technology (laboratory and field extensive industrial consulting practice),
education and scientific research in nature, health & environment protection:
human & eco biomonitoring, risk-assessment, communication and sustainable
development. Currently is involved in several international scientific projects. He
is the author of more than 200 professional and 20 scientific papers published in
the professional magazines and scientific publications (international conferences)
and several innovations.
