KILLER FORTUNES
For these guys, winning the lottery was easy. Surviving it? Not a chance.
Nothing is a long shot in Killer Fortunes, a black comedy about the (mis)fortunes
of five friends on a reunion trip to a remote cabin in the wilderness.
When one of them buys a lottery ticket for old-time's sake, no one expects to
win. But they do. In fact, they win the entire 33-million dollar jackpot – 6.6 million
each.
But then the odds (and gods) turn against them...
WADE is the pudgy purchaser of said ticket. He finds out it’s a winner while the
others are off hiking. So he decides to make off with the ticket himself.
Unfortunately, he meets his demise during a storm when a lightening strike
sends a large branch through the roof of the truck and impales him.
8.25-million dollars each...
In a symbolic gesture, the guys have a small ceremony for their friend, burying
the ticket in the woods in an empty champagne bottle. Not until later do they find
out it's the winning ticket. Now they have to dig it up, but heavy rains and plenty
of ineptitude complicate the search.
They recover it and celebrate. SIMON, the not-so-closeted gay friend, gets
carried away and tries to rehash a veiled high-school romance with Murphs.
Simon takes a header into the hot tub.
Afraid of the police and unable to claim their winnings, MURPHS convinces the
rest of them they must bury Simon in the woods.
11-million dollars each...
Trust breaks down. JAMIE, the know-it-all, switches the winning ticket with one
for the following week's draw. Trying to get away from TYLER and Murphs, he
takes refuge at the cabin of a couple of rifle-toting, pot-growing hicks. When Tyler
and Murphs track him down there, they are all taken hostage. In an unfortunate
turn of events, Jamie gets shot. But it's not life-threatening, according to him. And
he knows everything.
Jamie dies.
16.5-million dollars each...
Murphs and Tyler escape from the bumpkins and are chased to a suspension
bridge. Tyler, who has a fear of bridges, freezes at the edge and calls Murphs a
traitor. Murphs convinces Tyler it’s his only option, so Tyler steps onto the
bridge…
That’s when bullets from the bumpkins’ rifles sever the cables and the bridge
swings across the canyon with Murphs and Tyler clinging to the end of it, Murphs
still clutching the winning lottery ticket.
They reconcile and pledge to split the money. Then the bridge snaps off and
they plunge into the gorge.
Jackpot…
Because greed always gets between fools and money. That you can bet on.
