Writing psychology essays is one of the coursework assignments for

students taking up Psychology. Organising and writing psychology essays

requires the same tasks as any other type of essay in other subjects:

careful planning, comprehensive research, analysing research findings,

and doing secondary research and analysis before creating an outline and

writing the essay. Only after a comprehensive research has been done on

the topic should the essay writer be able to create a proper outline and

start the actual writing process. After writing, the next follow-up steps

for the writer include proofreading the draft and reviewing its contents,

then editing these taking into account the needs of the essay. What

differentiates psychology essays from other types of essays is in the

discussion. Planning the first paragraph of an essay is important

in order for it to be both interesting enough for the reader to continue

on reading it until its last paragraph and relevant enough to shed light

on an important issue or contribute knowledge to a field of study. They

key to getting the reader's attention is to draw them into the topic that

you are writing about. One example of doing this is by using statistics

or a startling fact that will help the reader focus on the topic and add

a sense of urgency to tackle the issue.

In any course of action, planning is an important part to ensure that

the outcome will be successful. The pre-planning stage of the essay

project is to carefully read the question. Do not make the mistake of

simply glancing at the topic to pick key words and making a whole essay

based solely on this. Instead, determine what is being asked of you from

the question and plan your research and writing activities with this in

mind. The best research sources are university libraries and academic

databases such as PSYCHNET or PSYCInfo. Online web sites can also provide

supplementary information. Just be sure to access academically based web

sites that feature professionally written articles and abstracts from

peer reviewed psychology journals. You may also view the direct web sites

of scientific publications or psychology associations. Just be sure to

cite these references fully in your school's required format. For

Psychology essays and papers this is most likely going to be in the APA

referencing style. With regards to creating outlines, you can have

the license to skip this altogether if you feel you already know the

content and structure of your psychology essays by heart. This is also

not recommended if you are just given a limited period on an exam to

write your essay. Otherwise, this is a good way for you to organise your

essay and make sure that nothing important is left out. It will also

ensure that you do not stray from discussion that is not important to the

essay.
