William E. Nelson - a Korean War-era Navy carrier pilot who also served in the Naval Air Re-
serve. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal in 1971 for outstanding performance as Commanding Officer of Na-
val Reserve Attack Squadron 303. He retired as Captain, USNR, in 1977 with nearly 27 years of active and reserve service.
Mr. Nelson retired in 1996 from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he had been Emergency Preparedness
and Response Division Leader in the Nonproliferation, Arms Control and International Security Directorate. In this assignment,
he spent 15 years directing research, development, training and operational readiness programs in support of the Department
of Energy in worldwide response to nuclear emergencies. He was also responsible for LLNL organizational preparedness for
natural or man-made disasters on the Livermore site.
Mr. Nelson joined the Livermore Laboratory in 1960 and spent the next 20 years working in nuclear weapon development, ulti-
mately rising to the position of Weapons Engineering Division Leader and Assistant Associate Director for Weaponization.
He is a resident of Alamo and currently Chairman of a Police Service Area Advisory Board in his local community and is a mem-
ber of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Posse.
