History of Music Downloading
• Napster was the first p2p system created online to share
music files. The company became very popular but eventually
broke down after being sued by the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA) for copyright infringement
lawsuits. Music companies felt that music was being stolen
and would ultimately effect record sales.
• The controversy over music downloading became huge. Some
believed that it was morally wrong to “steal” music. While
others, including many artists, thought p2p was a great way to
share art.
• New p2p sites were created to continue the sharing of music
files. These companies were able to run without a main
server making the company anonymous and placing copyright
charges onto the individuals instead.

How Downloading Works
A lot of music on the
internet is downloaded by
peer-to-peer sharing.
People install sharing
systems (Limewire,
Kazza) onto their
computers. Then they are
able to share music with
other members.
Some music downloading
system are different.
Itunes does not share
files. The member
purchases the music from
a main server.

Lawsuits
• Recently, authorities have begun monitoring
users and some users have been prosecuted for
their inappropriate use of peer-to-peer (p2p)
networks such as Ares. In one case, a
grandfather of a minor was asked to settle
outside of court $4000 for his grandson illegally
downloading 4 movies.
• In another case, a college claimed that she had
no idea that the music industry would sue her
for downloading old Spice Girls music. She
settled out of court for $3000.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Should people be charged
thousands of dollars for illegally

HOW TO…
In ITunes
• In ITunes, the users can shop in the ITunes
Store. Users are able to search for music,
videos, etc.
• In order to buy any media, users must create an
account that links to a credit card/debit card
account.
• When a user finds the media file that he or she
wants, he or she can buy the media. Most songs
are 99 cents. Users can also download movies.
Limewire Store
• Recently, Limewire added a music store to
their application. This allows users to
download music legally. There are no details
to how that move benefitted Limewire.
Future of Music Downloading
Music downloading is still a very
controversial subject. But there
have been many advancements
made to help the problem. Some
governments are trying to create
a three strike system. Artists are
releasing albums online and
requesting donations. Also, music
companies are proposing a flat
monthly rate to access a group of
songs. And other sites such as
Pandora allow users to listen to
songs but not download them.
