Landscape & Architecture
Your goal is to capture the elements of Architectural Structures by focusing on lines, patterns, textures, shapes, forms,
and colors. With Architectural Photography, it is always nice to experiment by taking a shot of the whole structure,
then a part of the structure, and last a close-up or abstract of part of the building. This will give you variety and may
even help to produce a series of the same structure focusing on different elements. Don’t forget to take shots of the
structures at bird’s eye or worm’s eye view for more interest.
Landscapes must incorporate Rule of Thirds and can be taken in both horizontal and vertical formats. The best times to
take Landscape photos are: 30 min to an hour after sunrise and 1 to 30 minutes after sunset. Avoid taking landscape
shots in the glaring sun (usually middle of the day). When possible, set your camera on a tripod or steady surface.
Experiment by using slower shutter speeds to capture movement of people or cars while the structure or natural object
in the frame remains unchanging. Look for moody or dramatic lighting to add more emotion to the photography. Avoid
capturing objects in the frame, such as telephone poles and wires, garbage cans, fire hydrants, etc.
Assignment: Capture a variety of Landscapes and Architectural Photographs in the following formats:
1. 4 Architectural shots using different structures or buildings for each example
2. 1 Architectural shot in 3 parts; Whole building, part of the building, close-up or abstract of the
building.
3. 2 Vertical Landscape shots
4. 4 Horizontal Landscapes shots
5. Your Landscapes should include 4 representational and 2 impressionistic landscape examples
****Of these 13 photos, some should show examples of both vertical and horizontal formats, as well
as show an example of a landscape during sunset and/or sunrise.*******
****This assignment will require time outside of school to capture the landscape and architectural shots
required for the assignment. To make it fun, meet up with other classmates and brainstorm different
locations. There are many places within 10 minutes of Southridge H.S. to capture some great Architectural
and Landscape shots!
