Premier League - Paper round: United target Modric
Eurosport - Thu, 29 Apr 09:49:00 2010
A round-up of all the transfer gossip from Thursday's papers with Manchester United
linked with Tottenham's Luka Modric.
It must have been painful for Sir Alex Ferguson to watch his old nemesis Jose Mourinho
guide Internazionale into the Champions League final last night.
The European Cup has always been Fergie's favourite competition, but he has identified
the man to help his side regain their status as Europe's elite club.
According to The Sun, that man is 24-year-old Tottenham midfielder Modric.
The Red Devils are said to be lining up a £25 million bid for the diminutive Croatian
midfielder who Ferguson praised in the programme notes at the recent United v Spurs
game when he said: "And I give you another wee man who'll be at Old Trafford this
afternoon: Luka Modric, who is playing out of his skin at the moment."
Tottenham will no doubt try and bat off the advances of their Premier League rivals,
but United have managed to prise the likes of Michael Carrick and Dimitra Berbatov
away from them in recent seasons and will be confident their pockets will prove deep
enough once more.
A possible arrival at White Hart Lane is Bayern Munich midfielder Hamit Altintop. The
Turk is out of contract in the summer and Harry Redknapp is ready to compete with
Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid for his signature. (Various)

Fans can make difference - Harry
Harry Redknapp has called on fans to raise the roof at the Lane for one last time this
season as our bid for fourth place in the Premier League continues against Bolton on
Saturday.
Harry Redknapp
The manager described the support as ‘immense' in the memorable derby wins against
Arsenal and Chelsea and is looking for a repeat performance from the fans as we face
the Trotters in our final home match of the 2009-10 campaign.
We go into the game sitting in that coveted fourth spot but with Aston Villa, Manchester
City and Liverpool all breathing down our necks - all four teams separated by just two
points.
It's another fascinating weekend as City play host to Villa and Liverpool take on title-
favourites Chelsea at Anfield.
"The fans really made the difference against Arsenal and Chelsea and we need that
again," said Harry. "The atmosphere in those two games was something special and the
players can only be inspired by that.
"It will be a tough game as well. Bolton caused Chelsea all sorts of problems recently
and then went and won at Stoke and we all know how hard it is to get anything at the
Britannia.
"You can't underestimate how dangerous opponents Bolton are but we've been in
fantastic form, seven wins in our last nine games and we've played some superb football
at White Hart Lane this season, the fans must be delighted with what they've seen.
"Fourth place would cap it all and would be a great achievement.
"We all want to do it for the fans - and they can play their part as well against Bolton."

Ladies latest
Both the Under-15s and the Under-11 Whites reached the finals of their respective
League Cups over the weekend.
The older age group travelled to Luton Town for their semi-final and came away
convincing 3-0 winners thanks to goals from Katie Fray (pictured above), Bobbi
Cubberley and Lydia Maher.
It was an all-Spurs affair in the Under-11s semi with the Whites overcoming the Blues
by a solitary Ronell Humes strike.
Back in league action, Iris Isok and Siobhan Jones both helped themselves to two goals
each in a comfortable 6-1 victory for the Under-16s away at Fairlands.
The Spurs Ladies Thirds maintained their challenge for the GLRWFL Third Division
North title with a resounding 11-1 win over LNER, but there were defeats for both the
Under-14s and the Under-10 Blues at QPR.
There were better results, however, for the Under-13s - who beat Enfield Town 7-1 - and
the Under-12s who enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Hampstead.

Bale not for sale - Redknapp
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp takes his Tottenham team to Manchester United
on Saturday with a message for the Premier League: "Gareth Bale is not going
anywhere."
Bale has been showered with plaudits as Tottenham have chased fourth spot and that
elusive last Champions League spot this season, and reports earlier this week linked the
left-sided midfielder with a potential move to Old Trafford.
But Redknapp has no intentions of losing the Wales international, and said: "We're
looking to build a team here. We wouldn't be looking to sell players like him. He's the
future of the football club."
He added: "You've got to keep your best young players here. He's part of that.
"Someone's always got to link someone with somewhere. There's no chance of it. I don't
make those decisions but I know the chairman would not want to be selling him.
"We're a club that is looking to build a new stadium, a new training ground. We're a
club that wants to go upwards and forwards. We're not into selling a player like Gareth
Bale, that's for sure.
"His game has gone up so many levels this season. He's got stronger, he's a fantastic
athlete, great ability. He can do everything.
"He's got the ability to run all day. He's grown up. He's still only a boy, but physically
he has got stronger this last year and he's looking as good as any left-sided player in the
country.
"The ability to run like he does is amazing. He runs 60 yards, recovers, runs 60 yards
again, recovers, runs 60 yards, he just doesn't stop.
"When you are playing against him it must be very difficult because he just keeps going
at you and going at you. Eventually, unless you are very fit, you are not going to run
with him for 90 minutes."

Harry Redknapp is set to welcome back key players for Saturday's huge match at
Manchester United.
Aaron Lennon
Wilson Palacios is back after a two-match suspension while Jermaine Jenas, Aaron
Lennon and Ledley King could all return from injury.
Harry Redknapp will wait until after training on Friday to make a decision on winger
Aaron, who is back in the frame after missing all of 2010 so far with a groin problem.
"Aaron won't start, he's not ready to start again, but he could be available if we need 20
minutes or so," said Harry. "We'll wait and see."
That's also the case with Ledley, who wasn't quite ready to face Chelsea last weekend
after coming through his return match against Arsenal with flying colours on April 14.
"Again, we'll wait to see how Ledley is today," said Harry. "He played against Arsenal,
did a fantastic job and then Sebastien Bassong came back in for Chelsea an he did great
with Michael Dawson.
"We had to chop and change a lot last week but all the lads who came in all performed
for us. We look okay and hopefully they'll all be available. We've got a couple of longer-
term injuries but we've almost got a full squad."
Niko Kranjcar (ankle) and Vedran Corluka (ankle) join long-term injuries Carlo
Cudicini (wrist, pelvis) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin) on the sidelines.

Spurs heading Stateside
The Club is delighted to announce a pre-season training camp in the United States of
America as part of our preparations ahead of the 2010/2011 season.
A number of matches have been planned as part of the trip, kicking off on the West
Coast against our MLS Club Partners San Jose Earthquakes in a friendly game at Buck
Shaw Stadium in San Jose on Saturday July 17. Our pre-season schedule in the U.S. will
conclude on the East Coast with us participating in the 2010 New York Football
Challenge in New Jersey.
The 2010 New York Football Challenge will be a four-team tournament involving fellow
Barclays Premier League side Manchester City, MLS outfit New York Red Bulls and
Sporting Lisbon from Portugal. The tournament will take place from July 22-25 at the
Red Bull Arena (pictured above) in Harrison, New Jersey.
With an established supporter base in the U.S., including supporters' clubs in New
York, Chicago and San Francisco, the visit will provide a great opportunity to
strengthen links with fans and also with the Earthquakes.
Harry Redknapp said: "The summer camp will be a very important part of our
preparations for the new campaign and we're looking forward to heading out to the
United States in the summer. I spent some time out there during the 1970s playing and
coaching in Seattle and any chance I get to go back there is something I always look
forward to."
We last played in the U.S. as recently as 2003, when we participated in the Capital Cup
against MLS side DC United.
The Club's partnership with San Jose Earthquakes was established in 2008 and we
hosted the Earthquakes at Spurs Lodge in March this year as part of their MLS pre-
season preparations.
Ticket information for each of our matches will be made available in due course.

Legends sunk by Fleet
Les Ferdinand, David Howells and Espen Baardsen all lined-up as Spurs Legends were
beaten 3-1 by another ex-Spur Andy Sinton's Fleet Town on Sunday.
Sinton, a League Cup winner during his time at the Lane between 1996-99, is now
manager of the Ryman League side and played a half for each team at Fleet's Calthorpe
Park.
Striker Ferdinand made his first appearance for the Legends this season but it was
goalkeeper Baardsen who thrilled the 500-plus crowd with a string of fine saves.
Howells and Ferdinand went close before the first of Baardsen's saves but the home side
took the lead after 34 minutes.
Garry Brooke tried his luck from a free-kick just after the restart before Fleet doubled
their lead on 52 minutes. Howells tucked away a penalty to make it 2-1 midway through
the half before Baardsen's heroics kept Fleet at bay again.
Fleet eventually restored their two-goal lead but there was still time for one more Spurs
effort as Tim O'Shea headed just over from Sinton's cross.
Spurs Legends: Espen Baardsen, Dave Howells, Richard Cooke, Tim O'Shea, Tony
Galvin, Clive Wilson, Mark Falco, Garry Brooke, Steve Smart, Neil Smith, Les
Ferdinand. Subs: Glen Southam, Andy Sinton.

working alongside Tim and Striker Coach Les Ferdinand.
The new structure will look to further strengthen the relationship between the Academy

Harry Redknapp said he will wait on the fitness of 'one or two' players with knocks as
he prepares the squad for Chelsea on Saturday.
However, the manager revealed that Aaron Lennon was not yet ready to return from his
groin injury.
The good news is that the winger took a full part in training on Friday. "It was great to
see him out there again and it will be down to Aaron and how he feels," said Harry.
"Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later and he'll be back in time to play a part
before the end of the season."
Also definitely missing are Niko Kranjcar - CLICK HERE for an update - Vedran
Corluka (ankle) and Jermain Jenas (illness). Wilson Palacios serves the second and final
match of his two-match suspension.
"JJ had a bit of a jog around today but he's been ill all week," added Harry. "Charlie
(Corluka) has a protective boot on now for his ankle. He needed a painkilling injection
at Wembley but he could be back before the end of the season."
Ledley King
Harry Redknapp hasn't ruled out the possibility of Ledley King facing Chelsea on
Saturday.
The skipper made a magnificent return to action after a seven-week absence in the 2-1
win against Arsenal on Wednesday night.
Ledley has struggled to play twice a week throughout the season but Harry insisted after
training on Friday that he was still in the frame for Saturday's huge derby at the Lane.
"It's possible, for sure," said Harry. "He came in this morning and didn't feel too bad
and if there is any chance he can play, he will play.
"He will go through the barrier for us, whatever it takes. He's an amazing character,
Ledley. To come out and turn in a performance like he did the other night, when he
hadn't kicked a ball for seven weeks, was incredible.
"It will be a massive boost for us but we can't be sure he'll be fit to play. He has a
chance, but we won't know until tomorrow. Today, he feels it's settled down well, so
there is a possibility."

Harry Redknapp is without key players for Wednesday night's huge North London

The manager has ruled out any possible return for both Aaron Lennon (groin) and

Niko will undergo a scan later this week while Harry reported this morning (Tuesday)

Wilson Palacios also misses out as he's suspended for two matches after picking up a
10th yellow card in the FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wembley.
"We've a few injuries and we'll have to wait and see who is available," said Harry
before training. "There might be an opportunity for one of the younger lads, that's in

The Finale Dream is over
Our FA Cup dreams faded as a combination of missed chances, last-ditch defending and
that little slice of luck against us saw Pompey home 2-0 in Sunday's semi-final at Wembley.
Few would argue that we should have wrapped up this encounter before Fredrique
Piquionne finally broke the deadlock in the first half of extra time.
Chances came and went, David James produced saves when it mattered and then, crucially,
Michael Dawson suffered the misfortune of slipping at the key moment, allowing Piquionne
the game's golden opportunity from six yards in the 99th minute.
That was a real hammer blow but even then, within seconds of the goal, we were straight up
the other end only for Peter Crouch to hit the post and then see a goal disallowed as referee
Alan Wiley blew the whistle for a foul by Niko Kranjcar on James. It was a tight call - as
James' look of relief caught by the TV cameras suggested.
We couldn't find a goal in the second half of extra time and Pompey wrapped it up from the
penalty spot in the 117th minute, Kevin-Prince Boateng drilling home following Wilson
Palacios' foul on Aruna Dindane.
Harry Redknapp made five changes to the team that lost at Sunderland. Dawson returned
to captain the side with Vedran Corluka and Tom Huddlestone also back from injury. It
was a different front two as well as Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe came in for Eidur
Gudjohnsen and Roman Pavlyuchenko, who were both on the bench.
David Bentley's corners provided a couple of early chances. Defoe pounced on Corluka's
flick but Aaron Mokoena's touch took the effort wide and then James was forced into a
scrambling save to keep out Crouch's looping header.
There was a warning on the break from the next corner as Piquionne raced the length of the
pitch before taking aim at the other end, Palacios back just in time to take the pace off the
effort.
Piquionne tamely hit a volley at Gomes from close range in the 23rd minute and play went
straight up the other end, Luka Modric hitting a dipper onto the roof of the net.
Huddlestone clipped in the cross of the half for Crouch to climb high above Ricardo Rocha
and power in a header that James took spectacularly diving to his right.
Piqiuonne then had the chance of the half, running clear onto Hassan Yebda's pass and into
the box, he had time to pick his spot but Gomes was up to the task and blocked with his left
leg. Again, play switched immediately to the other as Bale got away from Steve Finnan only
to see his pull back from the byline completely miss everyone.
James produced the save of the half in the 39th minute. Crouch controlled Corluka's cross
and laid it back for Huddlestone to strike a delicious half-volley that was bound for the top
corner until James stretched and clawed away.
We were on the front foot straight away at the start of the second half as Bale floated in a
cross and Crouch headed down for Defoe to pull the trigger. It looked goal all the way but
Rocha flew across goal to get in a saving block.
Piquionne had Pompey's first chance of the half in the 56th minute, but could only head
tamely at Gomes and Defoe also failed to get full power behind a volley from 18 yards, again
easy for James. That proved Defoe's last involvement as Harry made the first change of the
game, a straight switch with Roman Pavlyuchenko entering the fray.
The next chance arrived for Crouch in the 65th minute as Bentley drilled in a corner with
pace, James came but misjudged it and left the striker with a clear header at goal - he
nodded a yard wide.
Pompey were being forced further back. Mokoena did enough as Crouch slid in for Bale's
low cross and then Corluka looked for Crouch in a crowded area and Mokoena was there
again, this time almost diverting the ball into his own net. Bale's next cross in the 76th
minute took James out of the game but the angle was against Crouch, who hit the post from
the byline.
Niko Kranjcar replaced Bentley in the 79th minute, another straight switch. He was soon in
the action, taking a series of corners that Crouch managed to win, but the second ball just
wouldn't drop right for us.
The board went up for two added minutes and we continued to look for that elusive goal.
Crouch thought he'd found it when he prodded Bale's cross at goal only for James to block
from point-blank with his legs. Modric then fired in another low cross that Wilson deflected
towards his own goal, but into the grateful hands of James.
That was that and we went into extra time.
Pompey had the first half-chance as Piquionne fired into the side-netting and then Kranjcar,
in space centrally, let fly straight at James. Kranjcar's clearance from Brown's corner then
caught out Rocha and Pavlyuchenko was onto the loose ball but lashed well wide.
The deadlock was broken in the 99th minute. Mark Wilson clipped in a free-kick, Boateng
headed into the danger area and Dawson slipped on the playing surface allowing Piquionne
a free shot at goal from six yards - he couldn't miss.
We stormed back on the offensive and within seconds, Pavlyuchenko crossed for Crouch
sliding in at the near post, his flick clipping the outside of the post.
We then had a goal disallowed as Bale got to the left byline and clipped in a cross, Kranjcar
challenged James and the ball spilled to Crouch, who finished - but play was brought back
for a foul on James. Eidur Gudjohnsen then entered the fray, so we had three strikers plus
Modric and Kranjcar making front five - plus Bale raiding down the left.
As you'd expect, we were on the attack from the whistle, Bale's latest charge and cross found
Pavluchenko sliding in but there wasn't enough power on his effort to trouble James.
Bale's shot found its way to Corluka at the far post but James narrowed the angle to save.
James then plucked a cross and sent Pompey away on a counter, Dindane burst through
centrally, Palacios got back to him and they both went over - penalty awarded.
Boateng drilled home from 12 yards and it was all over.

Harry Redknapp will make late decisions on the fitness of five players before Sunday's
FA Cup semi-final against Portsmouth at Wembley.
Michael Dawson (Achilles), Tom Huddlestone (ankle), Vedran Corluka (ankle), Ledley
King (thigh) and Jermaine Jenas (groin) will be given time to prove their fitness.
However, Harry has ruled out any possible return at Wembley for Aaron Lennon
(groin) and we go into the tie without cup-tied Kyle Walker and Younes Kaboul.
"It will be a last-minute decision with a few of the lads," said Harry on Friday morning.
"They will come out this morning and have a stretch with us but they won't actually
train until tomorrow.
"You never know, they might all be okay or none of them will be okay. It's very much a
case of wait and see, it's that tight with them.
"Michael has been having treatment morning and afternoon and we'll see how he is
tomorrow. We won't play him unless he's okay. I really couldn't say at the moment but
if anyone can play, he will. He's a fantastic professional and a great character but he has
to be right.
"Hopefully one or two will be okay. Ledley hasn't trained at all but he's going to come
out and have a stretch and see how he feels. He's doubtful, but you never know."
As for Aaron, Harry added: "He's not fit to play. We're taking it day by day, seeing how
he progesses. Until he's ready we won't push him back in. We'll wait until he's right."
Harry also reported that midfielder JJ was scheduled to join the players for a warm-up
this morning for the first time since his groin problem.

Clive Wilson volleyed home the goal of the match as a star-studded Spurs Legends team
comfortably beat Green Hearts FC on Sunday.
The legends XI included the likes of Paul Allen, Tony Galvin, Graham Roberts, Steve
Sedgley, Garry Brooke and Mark Falco and coasted to an impressive 8-2 win at AFC
Hornchurch's Bridge Avenue ground in Upminster.
Falco opened the scoring with a header from Mark Stimson's cross, Wilson finished one-
on-one for 2-0 and Sedgley lobbed home the third on 2-1 minutes,
Steve Smart added the fourth before Wilson's spectacular fifth, a stunning 25-yard
volley that flew into the top corner.
Guest player Simon Stebbing grabbed the sixth at the start of the second half, Green
Hearts rallied to make it 6-2 but Spurs weren't on the back foot for long as Stimson
looped home the seventh and Harry Sedgley, Steve's 15-year-old son, completed the
scoring.

Jermain Defoe is back - but Harry Redknapp is without key players for the trip to
Sunderland.
Our top-scorer this term returns to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury
but Harry faces a headache in central defence and central midfield as he prepares for
Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the injury list again includes Tom Huddlestone, who is struggling with
the ankle problem that kept him out for the best part of a month recently.
Michael Dawson is ruled out after an Achilles problem forced him out of the action
against Portsmouth last weekend. Captain in recent weeks, 'Daws' has started the last 27
matches - a run where we've lost just four games in all competitions.
Vedran Corluka joins the defensive absentee list after he was also forced off early
against Pompey with an ankle injury.
Ledley King is on his way back from a thigh problem but with him still out, it means
Harry is without central defenders Ledley, Daws and long-term injured Jonathan
Woodgate plus possible central defensive cover in Vedran and Tom.
"Michael picked up an Achilles injury last weekend and Tom Huddlestone's ankle has
blown up again, so they are both out," reported Harry on Friday.
"Ledley is doing okay, he's not available but he's getting there. Hopefully he's not too
far from fitness and we're going to need him if Michael's Achilles doesn't improve.
"Woodgate is out long-term and Younes Kaboul is cup-tied for Wembley, so we're short
of centre-halves."
Harry's problems are not just defensive though as Wilson Palacios (adductor) looks
likely to miss Sunderland and Jermain Jenas (groin) is still out - alongside Tom - so all
three central midfielders could be out.
"It's a problem but we've done really well without so many players out injured," said
Harry. "We've managed to keep picking up fantastic results and we'll see how we go
again at Sunderland."
Aaron Lennon (groin) also remains out but the positive news is that he's progressing
well. ""Yes, he's coming on well, he's improving," added Harry. "Yesterday (Thursday)
was probably the best day he's had.
"He's worked hard with the fitness coaches and he's getting there. He's improving day
by day, but we won't be taking any chances with him."
