The Legal Limit (Vintage
Contemporaries) by Martin Clark
The Whole Package
Gates Hunt is a compulsive felon, serving a stiff penitentiary sentence for
selling cocaine. His brother, Mason, however, has escaped their bitter,
impoverished upbringing to become the commonwealths attorney for their
rural hometown in Virginia, where he enjoys a contented life with his wife
and spitfire daughter. But Masons idyll is abruptly pierced by a wicked
tragedy, and soon afterward trouble finds him again when he is forced to
confront a brutal secret he and his brother had both sworn to take with
them to the grave, a secret that threatens everyone and everything he
holds dear.
Intricately plotted and relentlessly entertaining, The Legal Limit is an
exploration of the judicial systems roughest edges, as well as a gripping
story of murder, family, and the difficult divide that sometimes separates
genuine justice from the law.

With his third, and best novel, The Legal Limit, Martin Clark presents not
only a thoroughly engrossing legal thriller, but an engaging reflection on
the effects our decisions have now and in years to come. Set in his native
Stuart, a small town in South central Virginia, Mr. Clarks writing beautifully
captures all the characteristics and nuances of the area and its people.
The writing is crisp, humourous and detailed, and the characters are all
wonderfully developed.
Protagonist Mason Hunt has, with the protection of his older brother, and
the love of his devoted mother, overcome an abusive father and hard
scrabble upbringing to become a successful attorney. He returns
triumphantly to his hometown from big city Richmond with his beautiful,
artistic bride to be the local Commonwealths Attorney. The bliss and
serenity dont last, though, as a motor vehicle accident and a shooting from
20 years earlier by Masons brother turn his world upside down. Masons
efforts to deal with his personal and family crises will not only keep you
turning pages well into the night, but reflecting on the effects of our life
choices and what is justice. After you finish reading, theres a lot left to
contemplate; this novel is more filling than the hearty fare Mason eats at
the local diner. I have a quibble with part of the ending involving Masons
daughter, but other than that I found this book dead on perfect. Easily one
of the best fiction works of 2008, in any category.
