Dark Light by Randy Wayne White
Doc Ford And The Case Of The Sunken Treasure
A Category Four hurricane has swept the west coast of Florida, creating
havoc, changing lives, and reshaping the ocean bottom. It also uncovers a
long-forgotten shipwreck that leads Doc Ford to an old woman in a
secluded, worn-down mansion. She tells him the haunting story of a lost
love, and of her chance to discover the truth if Ford will salvage the boat-
the Dark Light. Intrigued, Ford agrees, and sets in motion a chain of events
that will change his life forever. For there are other things in that wreck as
well. Things other men want. Things worth killing for. And behind it all is an
old woman whose heart remains the greatest mystery of all...

If you took John MacDonald's Travis McGee and added in a dash of
Steinbeck's Cannery Row, you'd get Marion "Doc" Ford, the hero of Randy
Wayne White's Dark Light as well as a dozen or so predecessor books.
In Dark Light, Ford is staying reasonably close to home for a change, as
he recovers from the damage caused by a hurricane and more personally,
from a concussion received during one of his secret government missions.
This concussion makes him lose a brawl with the nasty Bern Heller.
Besides being greedy to the point of larceny, Heller also has committed a
series of crimes that slowly become unveiled throughout the novel and
make him seem sleazier and sleazier.
Ford and Heller are part of competing circles vying for sunken treasure:
the remains of a boat lost during World War II. The boat may have ties to
the mysterious Chestra Engle, a woman who has a strange effect on Ford
despite being a couple decades older. Eventually, the truths will come out,
as well as a second confrontation with Heller and another hurricane.
Dark Light is on a par with most of White's other Doc Ford novels, which is
to say it is to say it is a great read. Like the McGee novels which this
series is clearly based on, we get some good adventure with nasty villains
and a nice setting, with just a bit of world-weary cynicism. Even if you've
never read a book in this series, Dark Light should be a satisfying read.
