THE KING OF THE ROOSTERS
AND
THE FUNNY BUNNIES
The events of this story took place a long, long, long time
ago. In those days most people lived on a farm of one kind or
another. They varied in size and shape, some were big and some
were little. People who worked at jobs other than farming kept
gardens in their back yard for growing vegetables and raising
chickens. Now that's the important part because when you had
chickens you would also have a rooster. Back then it was the
crowing of the rooster that woke people up in the morning. They
did not have machines of any kind and especially no alarm clocks.
So when the sun rose the rooster would crow cock-a-doodle-doo and
everyone would know that it was time to get out of bed.
Roosters were so important that there was a king of the
roosters. His job was to see to it that there was a goodly supply
of roosters. And to see to it that all the roosters did their job.
The king of the roosters had a lot of power. It was through his
powers that the other roosters were able to do their two most
important jobs. One job was to help the chickens lay eggs and the
other job was to crow loudly every morning. You can see that this
was a very important job. If people didn't get up early to start
the day nothing would get done on time. The whole world would be
in a mess. The King of the roosters along with Mrs. Rooster, the
queen of the roosters, were the mother and father of all the
roosters. The King and Mrs. Rooster lived in a roost on the low
side of a very high mountain. The roost was near a river so that
they didn't have to go far for water.

In this time so long ago there were many kinds of
rabbits as there are today. But they had one kind we don't have
the funny bunnies. The funny bunnies were the friendliest,
softest, cutest little bunnies you ever seen. They were also the
quickest of all of the rabbits. Everyone always loved the funny
bunnies, except when the funny bunnies went wacky, which only
happened at Easter time. Easter time occurred in the spring when
people were celebrating the new buds, the flowers, and the warm
days that makes spring so wonderful and life so pleasant. For some
mysterious reason the funny bunnies would go wacky and start
stealing the chicken's eggs and hide them all over the place.
This made Easter an unpleasant time for the people who needed the
eggs to eat, and so they were upset with the funny bunnies. The
roosters got so mad they would run around like crazy trying to
peck at and catch the funny bunnies. But the funny bunnies were to
quick for either the people or the roosters to catch them. This
problem had gone on for years spoiling the other wise happy time
of Easter.
One year in the early spring before Easter, while the King
was away checking on the other roosters, the river began rising.
That winter there had been a lot of snow high in the mountains and
the warm spring days came early. With the heavy snow and the fast
melting, the river was coming down the mountain very fast and
rising faster and wider than it ever had done before. The river
rose so high and so fast that it swept the roost away with Mrs.
Rooster in side of it. It tumbled and tumbled and tossed and
turned throwing Mrs. Rooster all over the place. Finally the roost
slammed into a fallen tree that the funny bunnies used as a

bridge. Normally the bridge was way above the river but because
the river was so high the tree stopped the roost. Poor Mrs.
Rooster was so badly hurt that she couldn't even move. She just
lay there helpless. Just then, along came one of the funny
bunnies. Seeing Mrs. Rooster he jumped in and pulled her out of
the roost and onto the bridge. He then did two things. First he
got help to bring Mrs. Rooster safely to his hutch. Then right
away he sent a message to the king of the roosters to let him know
that Mrs. Rooster was all right. All the funny bunnies helped to
make Mrs. Rooster comfortable and to get better quickly.
In about a week the King came to take Mrs. Rooster back home
to their new roost. The king rooster was very grateful for all
that the funny bunnies had done for Mrs. Rooster. He wanted to
show his appreciation. He had an idea that would do two things at
one time. It would show his appreciation and it would fix it so
that when the funny bunnies went wacky at Easter time they would
no longer upset the people. And the roosters would no longer get
mad at the funny bunnies either.
This was the King plan. He would make all the funny bunnies
into Easter Bunnies. Easter Bunnies would have the power to make
their own Easter eggs. The eggs could be of any kind and any size.
The Easter Bunnies could then hide their own eggs anywhere they
wanted and no one would be upset any more.
With this new and special ability the Easter Bunnies found
they had a change of heart. When Easter came they now wanted to
hide their eggs where the children could find and enjoy them. So
they left the eggs in baskets at the door or hide them in the
yard. But then the eggs would be ruined by the rain or eaten by

the other animals. This made both the children and the Easter
Bunnies very unhappy. Once again the King of the Roosters came to
the rescue. When the King heard about these problems he granted
the Easter Bunnies another special power. He gave all Easter
Bunnies the power of the secret knock. The power of the secret
knock enables any Easter Bunny to unlock any door just by using
the secret knock. Now the Easter bunnies could leave their baskets
and hide their eggs inside the house. There they would be
protected form the weather and the other animals. Now on Easter
morning the children are the ones who have and enjoy the Easter
eggs.

The Easter Bunny
Easter Saturday is a day of delight
For the Easter Bunny is coming that night
It does not matter if your door has a lock
For the Easter Bunny knows a secret knock
He will open the door and let himself in
Once he is inside then his work will begin
Out come the baskets decorated with greens
He will first sprinkle them all with jellybeans
Then add chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs too
And any special treats he brought just for you
With the baskets full he will turn a quick eye
To hide special eggs for those who do not cry
He is quiet and quick and ever so neat
He is in and out and off down the street
He never makes a mess or causes a fuss
But he makes a wonderful Easter for us
Mama says there is only one thing to do
Show appreciation and share love with you
