                                             Abstract
          We conducted the trawl survey in order to clarify the autumn ocean distribution of the
 juvenile salmon (especially juvenile chum). The research vessels (R/V) Shunyo-maru (396.85
 gross tonnage) and Kaiyo-maru (2,630 gross tonnage) were used for trawl operations and
 oceanographic observations. The RN Shunyo-maru made a research cruise from August 26 to
 September 30, 1996. The RN Kaiyo-maru made a research cruise from October 4 to November
  13. The research areas were the central and southern parts ofthe Okhotsk Sea and the Pacific
 waters off Hokkaido and Kuril Islands. Twenty-nine trawl operations were conducted to collect
juvenile salmon by the R/V Shunyo-maru and fifty trawl operations by the R/V Kaiyo-maru.
 Juvenile chum, pink, and coho were only distributed in the central part of the Okhotsk Sea in the
 early autumn. They were not found in the southern part of the Okhotsk Sea. A few juvenile masu
 were found in the southern part. No juvenile salmon were collected in the Pacific waters. Many
juvenile chum, pink, coho, and masu were found in central and southern parts of the Okhotsk Sea
 in the mid-autumn. In contrast to the distributions of these four species, juvenile sockeye ,,,'ere
 found in the waters off the southwestern Kamchatka Peninsula only. Seasonal changes of
juvenile salmon distributions (except for juvenile sockeye) in the mid-autumn were characterized
 by southward migration of juvenile distributions from the central part to the southern part of the
 Okhotsk Sea. This study suggested that the central waters of the Okhotsk Sea are utilized as the
 summer and autumn nursery area for juvenile pink and chum. There were abundant distributions
of juvenile chum and pink in waters of SST of 11-12°C in the early autumn. The SST where
juvenile salmon (chum, pink, and masu) were distributed has drastically decreased and ranged
from 4 °C to 11°C in the mid-autumn. Most of the juvenile salmon were collected in waters of
less than 8 °C. The SST horizontal gradients of the sea areas where juvenile salmon were found
were relatively small.
         We recomnlend that the trawl surveys for abundance estimation of juvenile chum and
pink should be conducted in the early autumn, because they are considered to be stay within a
comparatively limited narrow areas (the central part of the Okhotsk Sea). The numbers of
juvenile chum were estimated to be about 330 million fish at catch rate 0.5 in the early autumn
and to be about 202 million fish in the mid-autumn. The number of juvenile pink were estimated
to be about 600 million fish in the early autumn and to be 663 million fish in the mid-autumn. In
the mid-autumn, the number of juvenile sockeye were estimated to be about 30 million fish, the
number of juvenile coho 6 million fish and the number of juvenile masu about 4 million fish. The
estimates of juvenile chum. pink and masu in this study suggested that the abundance of the 1996
out-migrating year-class of chum, pink and masu were larger than those of the 1993 out-
migrating year class

                                           Introduction
         Salmon fishery is one of the most important fisheries for consumers and fishermen in
northern Japan. We believe that the assessments of salmon stock abundance in offshore waters
contribute to the successes of salmon fisheries and propagation management. It is well-known
that distribution of Japan-origin salmon spreads over all the northern North Pacific Ocean and its
marginal seas (for example, Yonemori, 1975). Accordingly, it is difficult to survey all the areas
of salmon habitats in order to assess the stock conditions.
         The recent papers suggest that Japan-origin juvenile salmon might migrate into the Sea
of Okhotsk after they leave coastal waters offHokkaido (Kato, 1991; Veno and Shimizu, 1994 a
and b; Veno and Shimizu, 1995;Veno et aI., 1994; Veno and Shimizu, 1995). If Japan-origin
juvenile salmon gather within the limited areas of the Sea of Okhotsk in the autumn, there are
some possibilities that we can assess stock abundance of the juvenile chum in this area.
         In this study, we surveyed larger areas including all the Okhotsk and Pacific waters off
Hokkaido and Kuril Islands in order to clarify the general distribution of the juvenile salmon in
the autumn. Moreover, we suggests that it is possible to conduct stock assessment of Asian
salmon in the Okhotsk Sea.

                                  Materials and methods

Research vessels and cruises: The research vessels (RN) Shunyo-maru (396.85 gross
tonnage) and Kaiyo-maru (2,630 gross tonnage) were used for trawl operations and
oceanographic observations. These vessels were are classified into the stem trawler. The RN
Shimyo-maru belonged to the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries. The RN
Kaiyo-maru belonged to the Fisheries Agency of Japan. The RN Shunyo-maru made a research
cruise from August 26 to September 30. The RN Kaiyo-maru made a research cruise from
October 4 to November 13. When we arranged this report, we regarded the duration of the RN
Shunyo-maru cruise as the early autumn and the duration of the RN Kaiyo-maru cruise as the
mid-autumn for purposes of convenience. The research areas were the central and southern parts
of the Okhotsk Sea and the Pacific waters off Hokkaido and Kuril Islands.

Sampling gears and operations: We used two kinds of a mid-water rope trawl. One of them
was used onboard the RN Shunyo-maru. The trawl had a 0-30 m towing depth and a 30 m
horizontal opening at the mouth of the net. Another was used onboard the RN Kaiyo-maru. The
trawl had a 0-60 m towing depth and a 60 m horizontal opening at the mouth. The two trawls
were towed for one hour at about 5 knot. Twenty-nine trawl operations were conducted to collect
juvenile salmon by the RN Shunyo-maru and fifty trawl operations by the RN Kaiyo-maru.

Oceanographic observations: CTD observation (0-500 m in the RN Shunyo-maru, and 0-
1500 m in the RN Kaiyo-maru) or XCTD (the RN Kaiyo-maru) observations were conducted at
all of the trawl stations.

Biological measurements: Juvenile salmon were sorted according to species, and measured
body weights and folk lengths. Scale samples were taken for age determinations. Juvenile
salmon were numbered for identification and wrapped with plastic sheets. They were kept in the
refrigerator and dissected for detailed analysis on land. Immature and mature salmon were also
sorted according to species. After they were measured body weights and folk length onboard,
they were immediately dissected and measured sex identification and gonad weights. Scale
samples were taken for age determination. By-catch organisms were sorted according to species,
and measured body lengths and body weights.

                                              Results
Seasonal changes of juvenile salmon distribution: CPUE distributions of juvenile salmon were
sho\\TI in Fig.l. Upper ones showed the distributions in the early autumn and lower ones gave the
distributions in the mid-autumn. Juvenile chum, pink, and coho were only distributed in the
central part of the Okhotsk Sea in the early autumn. They were not found in the southern part of
the Okhotsk Sea. A few juvenile masu were found in the southern part. No juvenile salmon were
collected in the Pacific waters. Many juvenile chum, pink, coho, and masu were distributed in
central and southern parts of the Okhotsk Sea in the mid-autumn. In contrast to the distributions
of these four species, juvenile sockeye were found in the waters off the southwestern Kamchatka
Peninsula only. Seasonal changes of juvenile salmon distributions (except for juvenile sockeye)
in the mid-autumn were characterized by expansion of juvenile distributions to the southern part
of the Okhotsk Sea.

 Fork lengths of juvenile salmon: Fork length frequencies of juvenile salmon were given in
 Fig.2. Upper ones showed the fork length frequencies by species in the early autumn and lower
 ones showed the frequencies in the mid-autumn. Juvenile sockeye ranged from 220 to 300 mm
with a mean of 263 mm in the mid-autumn. The fork length range of juvenile chum in the early
autumn was between 110 and 300 mm with a mean of 204 mm. The fork length range ofjuvenile
chum L.'1 the mid-autumn was from 120 to 310 mm with a mean of 239 mm. The average fork
length of chum has increased from the early autumn to the mid-autumn by 35 mm. The range of
juvenile pink ranged from 110 to 240 mm with a mean of 182 mm in the early autumn. The
average fork length ofjuvenile pink has increased from the early autumn to the mid-autumn by 70
mm to 252 mm. The fork length range ofjuvenile coho andmasu were comparatively wide. The
fork length of juvenile coho ranged from 270 to 330 mm with a mean of 298 mm in the early
autumn and from 270 to 380 mm with a mean of315 mm in the mid-autumn. The fork length of
juvenile masu was in the range from 250 to 340 mm with a mean of 294 mm in the early autumn
and from 210 to 400 mm with a mean of 293 mm in the mid-autumn.

Relationships between the sea surface temperatures (SST) and distribution of juvenile
salmon: We showed CPUE distribution ofjuvenile chum on the chart of SST distribution (Fig.3).
We traced the chart of SST distribution from the monthly ocean report No. 45 and 46 (Japan
Meteorological Agency, 1996a and b). In the early autumn, juvenile chum were found in the
central waters of the Okhotsk Sea only, where SST horizontal gradients were small (11-12 °C).
The CPUE distribution of juvenile chum in the mid-autumn spread to the southern part of the
Okhotsk Sea, where SST horizontal gradients were also comparatively small. Such tendencies
were similarly observed in other juvenile salmon (pink, coho, and masu). Relationships between
SST and CPUE of juvenile salmon were given in Fig. 4. This shows that there were abundant
distributions of juvenile chum and pink in waters of SST of II-12°C in the early autumn.
Juvenile masu were found in the waters where the SSTs were a little high. In the mid-autumn, the
SST of juvenile salmon (chum, pink, and masu) distribution has drastically lowered and ranged
from 4 °C to 11°C. Most of the juvenile salmon were collected in waters of less than 8 °C.

Abundance estimation of juvenile salmon: We divided the survey areas into three strata in
order to estimate number of juvenile salmon. According to the procedures of the stratified
random sampling method and the area-swept method (Mackett, 1973), we estimated number of
juvenile salmon distributed in the survey areas by species (Table 1). Because the catch rate of the
trawl net is not knO\vn exactly, we calculated the number of juvenile salmon at three catch rates
 1.0,0.5, and 0.3 respectively. The numbers of juvenile chum were estimated to be about 330
million fish at catch rate 0.5 in the earl v autumn and to be about 202 million fish in the mid-
autumn. The number of juvenile pink were estimated to be about 600 million fish in the early
autumn and to be 663 million fish in the mid-autumn. In the mid-autumn, the number of juvenile

sockeye were estimated to be about 30 million fish, the number of juvenile coho 6 million fish and
the number of juvenile masu about 4 million fish.

By-catch species: We listed all of organisms collected in Table 2. Except for salmon,
Ommsfrephes bartrami, Engraulis japonicus, Sardinops melanosttctus, Cololabis saira,
Pleurogrammus azonus, and Scomber spp. were comparatively abundant in the early autumn.
Especially, P. azonus were very abundant in the southern Okhostk Sea. In the mid-autumn, a lot
of Bathylagidae, Myctophidae, and Gonatidae were collected. because some operations of trawl
in the mid-autumn were conducted at the night-time. Except for these deep-sea fishes and
salmon. the number of pelagic fishes collected in the mid-autumn were very few.

                                             Discussion
 Migration of juvenile salmon: Shimazaki (1976) surveyed the northern part of the Okhotsk Sea
 in the late summer using drifting gillnets in order to clarify distribution of juvenile salmon. He
 reported small juvenile chum and pink (less than 150 mm in fork length) were collected in
northern coastal waters in the Okhotsk Sea. He also reported that there were aggregations of
large juvenile pink and chum (more than 180 mm in fork length) in the central part of the central
 Okhotsk Sea. On the other hand, Veno (1997) noted that small juvenile chum and pink (less than
 150 mm in fork length) were distributed in the southern part of the Okhotsk Sea in the summer.
The present study shows that juvenile pink and chum did not occur in the southern part in the
early autumn. Accordingly, we can consider that juvenile chum and pink that were found in the
southern part in the summer would migrate northwards to the central Okhotsk Sea in the late
summer or early autumn. The small juvenile chum and pink distributed in northern coastal
waters can be also considered to move to the central waters as they grew up. These suggest that
the central waters of the Okhotsk Sea are utilized as the summer and autumn nursery area for
juvenile pink and chum (Fig. 6. The left ha.fJ.d).
          In the mid-autumn, the distributions of juvenile chum and pink has spread out the
southern part of the Okhotsk Sea. This suggests that juvenile chum and pink began to migrate
southwards from the central part to the southern part. We considered that the decrease in SST of
the Okhotsk Sea facilitated the southward migrations of juvenile pink and chum. The schematic
migration of juvenile pink and chum in the mid-autumn was sho''vn in Fig. 6 (the right hand).
          Juvenile coho and masu were distributed in waters that was nearer the coast than juvenile
chum and pink. However, they also have the southward migration in the mid autumn and their
migration pattern of them basically looked like the migration pattern of juvenile chum and pink
well.

Timing of the survey for abundance estimation of juvenile chum and pink in the Okhotsk
Sea: We did not survey the northern part of the Okhotsk Sea. Shimazaki (1977) surveyed the
northern part of the Okhotsk Sea in the late-summer and found the number of juvenile chum and
pink in these waters were already not so many. The present survey showed that most of juvenile
chum and pink left the southern part of Okhotsk Sea for the central part in the early autumn.
These suggest thatjU\'enile chum and pink concentrate in the central part of the Okhotsk Sea in
the early autumn. Accordingly, we recommend that the trawl surveys for abundance estimation
of juvenile chum and pink should be conducted in the early autumn, because they are considered
to be stay within a comparatively limited narrow areas (the central part of the Okhotsk Sea).

The abundance of the 1997 out-migrating year-class of Asian juvenile salmon: Veno et aL
(1994) reported estimates of juvenile salmon (the 1997 out-migrating year-class) in the Okhotsk
Sea in the autumn of 1993. In the present study, the estimates of the numbers of juvenile chum,
pink. and masu in the autumn of the 1996 were 202.5.6630. and 3.8 million fish at the catch rate
0.5. respectively. These estimates were considerably more than the estimates in the autumn of

1993 (Table 3) This may suggest that the abundance of the 1996 out-migrating year-class of
these three species \vere larger than those of the 1993 out-migrating year class.
