9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION
10
11 TO CONGRATULATE JOSEPH MCABEE OF WOODRUFF
12 ON WINNING THE 2010 PAULETTA AND DENZEL
13 WASHINGTON FAMILY SCHOLAR IN NEUROSCIENCE
14 AWARD.
15
16 Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased
17 to learn that Joseph McAbee of Woodruff, a rising junior at
18 Wofford College, has recently been named the recipient of the
19 seventh annual Pauletta and Denzel Washington Family Scholar in
20 Neuroscience Award; and
21
22 Whereas, actor Denzel Washington and his wife presented Joseph
23 with the award at a ceremony at Harlem Village Academies, a
24 public charter school in New York City, on June 7, 2010; and
25
26 Whereas, Joseph, a premed biology major and graduate of
27 Woodruff High, is the only undergraduate to receive the national
28 honor. The program provides $2,000 to $2,500 in monthly support
29 for recipients to work during the summer under the direction of
30 faculty and staff mentors, the ultimate purpose being preparation
31 of a scientific abstract or paper for submission to a national
32 neuroscience, cancer, or neurosurgery organization; and
33
34 Whereas, this summer, Joseph will study with research teams in
35 the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in
36 Los Angeles. He will work in the Dendritic Cell Vaccination Lab
37 at Cedars-Sinai, which is under the direction of the center’s chief
38 of neurosurgery, Dr. Keith Black, and principal investigator Dr.
39 Christopher J. Wheeler. While there, Joseph will learn several
40 research techniques that are vital in not only neuroscience research
41 but also scientific research in general; and
42
[5084] 1
1 Whereas, it was reading Dr. Black’s autobiography, Brain
2 Surgeon, last summer that made Joseph aware of the program. He
3 also read two books written by Dr. Benjamin Carson, director of
4 the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical
5 Center, which also inspired Joseph to pursue a career in
6 neurosurgery. Joseph believes mention of that fact set his
7 application essay apart for the selection committee, which was
8 composed of several world-renowned physicians and research
9 scientists. The biggest weight was given, however, to the strong
10 academic and personal recommendations written for Joseph by
11 Wofford faculty members; and
12
13 Whereas, a well-rounded young man, Joseph plays on his college’s
14 Ultimate (frisbee) team, enjoys performing on French horn,
15 regularly volunteers at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and
16 counts church and his faith in God as critical parts of his life. He
17 also enjoys movies, particularly Denzel Washington vehicles; and
18
19 Whereas, the House of Representatives applauds Joseph McAbee
20 for being named winner of the 2010 Pauletta and Denzel
21 Washington Family Scholar in Neuroscience Award and extends
22 best wishes for much success in his studies this summer. The
23 members look with interest to the unfolding of his career as he
24 completes his studies at Wofford College and begins the next level
25 of education for his life’s work. Now, therefore,
26
27 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
28
29 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives,
30 by this resolution, congratulate Joseph McAbee of Woodruff on
31 winning the 2010 Pauletta and Denzel Washington Family Scholar
32 in Neuroscience Award.
33
34 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to
35 Joseph McAbee.
