CPSC 483 – Section 502 Lab 3 Fall 2000
Purpose:
In this lab you will input the CPU (to Protel) as well as the SIMM socket for the SDRAM that
will comprise the volatile system memory. The CPU will be much more time consuming, and no
actual connections between these two devices will be made.
Components:
The only components that are listed in this section are those that will be used in this lab. Refer to
the appendix of this lab for our revised list of components. This is the list as it occurs for us now
since we have made some changes in our design decisions. This will affect your overall design
layout, but not your work from the earlier labs. These parts will need to be ordered rather than
the parts on the original list, and our revisions are included for the purposes of our 483 course.
Component: Part Number:
Standard 72-pin DRAM stick (standard DRAM)
72-pin DRAM SIMM SOCKET Digikey 821924-8
Processor IBM PowerPC 403GCX
AMP socket - Processor 822114-4 (cover 822115-4)
Design:
1. Consult the user’s manual for the 403GCX PowerPC processor to determine the
pinout for the processor. Consult the data sheet for the processor to obtain
information on the 160-pin footprint.
2. Consult a general function manual on 72-pin SIMMs to get the pinout for such a
device. Download a datasheet for the above socket to obtain dimensions for the
SIMM socket footprint.
Pre-lab Procedure:
1. Draw out on paper a logical grouping for the pins of the PPC403GCX. Consult
the user’s manual carefully to understand the function (and direction of data) for
all 160 pins. This paper model will be directly translated into a Protel schematic
for this lab.
2. Draw out on paper a logical grouping for the pins of the 72-pin SIMM SDRAM
stick. Consult the general function manual carefully to understand the function
(and direction of data) for all 72 pins. This paper model will be directly translated
into a Protel schematic for this lab.
Lab:
1. Processor and Socket: As was said before, this will be the most time consuming
of the two objectives in this lab. Carefully lay out your logical grouping for the
160 pins in a Protel schematic library. These pins will be mapped to pins on the
footprint so, specific grouping is not important in terms of the schematic library.
Follow the datasheet for the AMP processor socket (mentioned above) carefully,
using it to create a PCB footprint. Finally, these two components will need to be
linked together whenever including the processor in a schematic. Doing so is not
necessary at this point in design, but will be soon in upcoming labs.
2. SIMM and Socket: Carefully lay out your logical grouping for the 72 pins in a
Protel Schematic library. These pins will be mapped to pins on the footprint so,
specific grouping is not important in terms of the schematic library. Follow the
datasheet for the SIMM socket (mentioned above) carefully, using it to create a
PCB footprint. As with the processor and its socket, these components will need
to be linked together in upcoming labs.
