THE GRAPEVINE

JUNE 2011

MINISTER’S MUSINGS

Our church life ran the gamut in May. We had the nail-biting joy of opening the Thrift Store. (It’s

doing great!) We had the busyness of taking pictures for our new pictorial directory. (Over 90% of

you signed up to have your photo taken. Thank you!) We had the fun of a Mexico Mission Dinner

(which raised more than $800). We had the sorrow of Jack Maraglia’s passing and the privilege of

hosting his Memorial Service. (Barbara is deeply appreciative of her church family.) We had the

celebration of a Pre-Memorial Day picnic at Steve Hamp’s home. (Your place looked great, Steve.)

And we’re wrapping up the month by recognizing graduates.

June will bring new blessings. On Sunday, June 5, we’ll thank our faithful Sunday School teachers

and childcare providers. The children invite you to an open house. Please join us to see what your

children are learning. It will bring you a smile, I’m sure.

June 5 will also be the first ONE SERVICE on our new summer schedule. For the months of June,

July and August, we’ll all worship together at 9:30. We’ll have a blended style of worship with mu-

sic from both traditional and contemporary sources. Come meet those “other service” friends!

Friday, June 10, starts our Yard Sale set up (see article later in the newsletter) and Saturday, June

11, finds our Holy Strollers on the college track raising money in the American Cancer

Society’s Relay for Life.

June 12 is Pentecost Sunday, the commemoration of the Holy Spirit’s descent upon Jesus’ disci-

ples. Wear red to celebrate the day! (But bring work clothes for the BBQ lunch and unpacking of

Yard Sale boxes which will follow our worship service.)

Also on June 12, we’ll commission our Mexico Mission Team and send them south on June 17.

They’ll join other young people and intrepid adults from our region to build three houses in Rosarita.

This is a big project that makes a real difference.

I can’t stop talking about June until I’ve mentioned two other momentous events. On June 24

our own Leighton Lawrence will be married in Las Vegas, NV. He and his new bride, Kristen, will

return to live and work in Redding as a pharmacist and dental hygienist respectively. Also on June

24, Hilda Stevens turns 93. Aren’t we blessed with wonderful people and multiple reasons to cele-

brate?

God bless us all,

Heather

Cancer, Etc. Support Group

Our next Cancer, Etc. gathering at the church will be on July 9. This month we’ll

watch the survivor and team laps at the Relay for Life. This important event begins

at 9:00 a.m. at Shasta College. See you at the track on June 11.

AUTOMATIC PLEDGING

Paying your pledge automatically is a great way to support your church whether you are at home

or traveling. Most banks will do this at no cost to you! You will make one trip to the bank (or set up

online) and ask them to:

1) Make an automatic withdrawal from your account on a regular basis (specified by you)

2) Make a check out to First Christian Church

3) Mail it to 3590 Placer Street, Redding, 96001

It’s that easy!

MEXICO MISSION 2011

Thank you for your incredible support of this year’s Mexico Mission Team, both financially and

prayerfully. With your donations, more than $3,000 has been raised to send our youth and adults

to Mexico and we couldn’t have done it without you!

The Mexico Mission Team leaves for Mexico Friday, June 17. We will commission the team Sun-

day, June 12 during worship. If you’re interested in participating in their send-off blessing, come to

the church Friday, June 17 at 4 p.m. The team will lead worship Sunday, July 31 sharing stories

and photos of their experiences.

Time’s a-wastin’! If you’d like to join our “track team” or help with setting up or taking down Site 14,

please let Velva know. If you’d like to purchase an honor/memory card to display at church, then at

our camp site, see Guess Who at the back of the worship area on May 29 and June 5 . There is no

lower monetary limit, but there’s no upper limit either! If you’d like to sponsor a team member, she

can arrange that, too. For all things Relay, contact Velva at 472-3878 or skinnyfoxtwo@yahoo.com.

Thanks a bunch.

If you want to sponsor one of our middle schoolers to walk in the wee hours of the morning, youth

will be collecting donations the next two Sundays. If you make a donation, you get to sign a shirt

the youth will wear when they are walking. Also, look for baked goodies by Joanne Gasser that will

be auctioned off to support our middle school walkers on Sunday, June 5.
