What is Choices?
Choices is a national programme providing confidential, impartial and non-
directive advice to people considering voluntary return. For those who have
decided to return, Choices provides assistance with travel documents and
flights. We also help people access help towards reintegration in their
country once they have returned.
What is the role?
Volunteering alongside an experienced monitoring officer, Choices admin
support volunteers will undertake a range of basic administrative duties to
enable the smooth running of Choices AVR teams
What’s the time commitment?
You’ll need to be available to complete some initial training sessions
and then
We’d reasonably expect you to commit to a full day or 2 half days a
week.
Refugee Action Volunteers ideally commit to the service for at least 6
months.
Will I receive training and support?
All Refugee Action volunteers will receive:
Induction and a number of training sessions
On-going support from a volunteer coordinator
Reasonable expenses to cover travel and lunch
Where would I be based?
Our main Choices offices are in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.
AVR Admin Support Volunteer Role Outline
What are the main duties?
Assisting monitoring officers with basic admin duties
Assisting with collating information from the Choices database;
Entering information onto a spread sheet;
Electronic data inputting;
Faxing documents
Checking database to respond to enquiries about case status from
clients and staff
Answering the telephone
Assisting caseworkers with basic admin duties
Duties specific to the area:-
London Office: -
Collating client ID documents into airport packs
What are we looking for?
The minimum skills, qualities and abilities Refugee Action is looking for in
Admin Support volunteers are:
Understanding of and commitment to the needs of asylum seekers,
refugees, irregular migrants and other displaced people
Ability to work with people from a range of different cultures
An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and equal
opportunities and a willingness to put this into action
Effective communication skills/telephone skills
Ability to use computers and input data onto a database
Organisational skills and the ability to prioritise one’s work load
Commitment, punctuality and reliability;
Ability to speak English to an intermediate level
Ability to work in an environment that can at times be busy and
emotionally demanding
Ability to work well in a team;
