13         INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS
14      To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 3556) to
15   request that the Department of Transportation name the
16   interchange and bridge located at the intersection of Interstate
17   Highway 385 and New Harrison Bridge Road in Greenville
18   County, etc., respectfully
19                              REPORT:
20      That they have duly and carefully considered the same and
21   recommend that the same do pass:

11   TO   REQUEST   THAT     THE   DEPARTMENT     OF
12   TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERCHANGE AND
13   BRIDGE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF
14   INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 385 AND NEW HARRISON
15   BRIDGE ROAD IN GREENVILLE COUNTY IN HONOR OF
16   DR. ROBERT E. DENNIS, AND ERECT APPROPRIATE
17   MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THE INTERCHANGE AND
18   BRIDGE LOCATED AT THIS INTERSECTION THAT
19   CONTAIN THE WORDS “DR. ROBERT E. DENNIS
20   INTERCHANGE” AND “DR. ROBERT E. DENNIS BRIDGE”.

22   Whereas, Dr. Robert E. Dennis, Pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist
23   Church in Simpsonville, stands among their number as an
24   outstanding minister of the Gospel and servant to his community,
25   one much admired by colleagues, his congregation, and area
26   residents at large; and
27
28   Whereas, having professed faith in Christ at the age of twelve, the
29   young Robert was baptized and accorded membership in the Reedy
30   Fork Baptist Church, which later licensed him to preach; and
31
32   Whereas, upon graduation from Bryson High School in Fountain
33   Inn, Robert Dennis attended the Greenville Extension of the
34   American Baptist Theological Seminary and later received his
35   Bachelor of Theology degree from Morris College in Sumter. In
36   1990, Benedict College bestowed upon him an Honorary Doctor of
37   Divinity degree; and
38
39   Whereas, after becoming pastor of the Holly Springs Baptist
40   Church in 1968, Pastor Dennis was ordained by the Reedy River
41   Baptist Association, and in 1969 he assumed the pastorate of the

 1   Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Simpsonville, where he has served
 2   for over forty years; and
 3
 4   Whereas, believing a pastor should be involved in his community
 5   beyond the walls of the church, Pastor Dennis also serves as a
 6   board member for the Greenville County Department of Social
 7   Services, instructor for the Greenville Extension of the Morris
 8   College School of Religion, Vice President of the board for South
 9   Greenville Mental Health, and board member for the Golden Strip
10   YMCA, among numerous other worthy endeavors; and
11
12   Whereas, Pastor Dennis has won numerous awards for his work
13   within the community, including the Cooper White Humanitarian
14   Award from the Greenville County Human Relations Commission;
15   the Silver Crescent, presented by Governor Jim Hodges; and a
16   listing among the Greenville News New Millennium’s 500 Most
17   Influential Individuals in the Greenville area; and
18
19   Whereas, although he devotes much time to his work for church
20   and community, Robert Dennis also finds time to spend with his
21   family, including his beloved wife, Mary, and their two children,
22   Elaine McCrary and Caroline Neely, who have given their parents
23   the joy of several grandchildren; and
24
25   Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize the
26   accomplishments of this great man of God and son of South
27   Carolina by naming the bridge and interchange at the intersection
28   of Interstate Highway 385 and New Harrison Bridge Road in
29   Greenville County in his honor. Now, therefore,
30
31   Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
32   concurring:
33
34   That the members of the General Assembly request that the
35   Department of Transportation name the interchange located at the
36   intersection of Interstate Highway 385 and New Harrison Bridge
37   Road in Greenville County “Dr. Robert E. Dennis Interchange”
38   and name the bridge located at this interchange “Dr. Robert E.
39   Dennis Bridge”, and erect markers or signs at the interchange and
40   bridge that appropriately read “Dr. Robert E. Dennis Interchange”
41   and “Dr. Robert E. Dennis Bridge”.

1 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
2 the Department of Transportation.
