                                                                                           The cliff served as a navigational aid to the
                                                                                           Native Americans coming along the coast in
                                                                                           their oceangoing canoes.
                                                                                                These days Kennebunkport is best
                                                                                           known as a century-old oceanfront retreat of
                                                                                           former president George H. W. Bush. But
                                                                                           there is much more going on than just gawk-
                                                                                           ing through binoculars at the family’s
                                                                                           Walker’s Point compound. Exploring by foot,
                                                                                           bike and boat reveals this old coastal town’s
                                                                                           enduring charms.
                                                                                                Former homes and 18th century ware-
                                                                                           houses are now packed with shops, galleries,
                                                                                           antiques dealers, restaurants, and bed and
