Yahoo! Introduces Free Anti-Spyware Solution on Yahoo! Toolbar
New Anti-Spy Beta Helps Consumers Identify and Remove Potentially Unwanted Programs
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - May 27, 2004 - Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) today introduced Anti-Spy beta for the Yahoo!
Toolbar (beta.toolbar.yahoo.com). Anti-Spy gives users more control over their online experience by providing a free,
fast, and easy way to scan for and manage the software that may reside on their computer, including spyware.
The launch of the Anti-Spy beta solution is one of many steps that Yahoo! is taking to foster consumer dialogue about
the complex issue of spyware. Spyware, hijackers and similar downloaded software, are applications that perform
potentially unwanted functions, possibly without the users' consent, such as displaying advertising, redirecting search
results, changing the user's homepage or monitor surfing habits. Through the beta, Yahoo! will obtain consumer
feedback about these types of software, and will build upon that insight to ensure that the Anti-Spy solution best
serves its users' needs.
Anti-Spy Benefits
Anti-Spy beta on Yahoo! Toolbar is an easy-to-use feature that provides consumers with visibility into their computer
to help them manage their online experience. Anti-Spy offers consumers a way to identify potentially unwanted
software like spyware, then lets consumers decide whether they want to disable/remove, ignore or keep the files that
are found. If a user chooses to delete suspect software and later changes their mind, they can restore most such
programs.
In tandem with the launch of Anti-Spy beta, Yahoo! has also introduced a forum designed to provide consumers with
a community driven resource to keep abreast of the most pressing issues related to spyware and other potentially
unwanted software. The site (beta.toolbar.yahoo.com/antispyware) enables consumers to share insights on such
programs, find current information such as the top five emerging pests of the day/week, and links to related news
stories and resources. Both the launch of Anti-Spy beta and the new Anti-Spyware forum, represent Yahoo!'s
commitment to helping consumers manage their online experience and supplement its long-standing Security Center
(security.yahoo.com), a valuable resource for consumers who want to learn more about online security issues.
"Our objective is to develop the best services and tools to meet the evolving needs of Internet consumers. Anti-Spy
beta is yet another great example of a free service that instantly puts the consumer in control of their Internet
experience," said Julie Herendeen, vice president, network products, Yahoo!. "We are thrilled to build upon our
existing consumer resources such as the Yahoo! Security Center, to help users not only find accurate information
about online security, but also provide them with the tools and community voice to help them take an active role in
protecting themselves online."
Anti-Spy beta is supported by third party software provided by Pest Patrol, and is available for download to a limited
audience at beta.toolbar.yahoo.com.
