Extended mortgage rescue

scheme

In January this year Trafford Council was designated as one of four authorities in

Greater Manchester to try out the Government's mortgage rescue scheme (MRS).

The MRS scheme is designed to help homeowners, at risk of homelessness through

repossession, to stay in their homes. The £200 million scheme is part of a wider package of

measures introduced to help people during the economic downturn.

Following on from the budget last month the scheme is being extended to allow a number

of homeowners who are in negative equity to apply. This change has been introduced

to widen the scope of the scheme and to increase the number of homeowners who may

benefit from mortgage rescue.

Anyone experiencing difficulties with their mortgage must contact their lender in the first

instance and discuss the options they are able to offer. For further information on MRS

contact the housing options team on 0161 968 0343 or go to communities.gov.uk.
