Animism

 The term animism is derived from the Latin word anima meaning breath or soul.

 The belief of animism is probably one of man's oldest beliefs, with its origin most

likely dating to the Paleolithic age.

 A belief that a soul or spirit existed in every object, even if it was inanimate.

 Plants and trees have been considered sacred by themselves because, as some

have thought, they are home to certain spirits.

 They view life as being in everything, and everything, even man, supporting life.

Life is sacred -- all life.

Animism can be found in many tribal or primal religions.

Animism is also found in most of the world religions in East Asia, as folk religion.

Zoroastrianism

The religion was founded in Persia, which is the region covered by

modern-day Iran and Iraq, by Zarathushtra (Zoroaster in Greek;

Zarthosht in India and Persia). Conservative Zoroastrians assign a date of

6000 BC to the founding of the religion; other followers estimate 600 BC.

Historians and religious scholars generally date his life sometime between

1500 and 1000 BC on the basis of his style of writing.

The prophet Zarathustra ("Zoroastr" in Greek transcription) gave its name to the religious-

philosophic study of Zoroastrianism, old Iranian for "the one who owns a golden or old camel".

According to traditional Pekhlevi chronology, Zarathustra lived "258 years before Iskander"

Ramadan

• The ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

• Muslims observe strict fasting from sunup to sundown.

• Muslims believe that during the month of Ramadan, Allah revealed the

first verses of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. At many mosques

during Ramadan, about one thirtieth of the Qur'an is recited each night

in prayers known as tarawih. In this way, by the end of the month the

complete scripture will have been recited.

Eid al-Fitr

• Occurs the day following Ramadan. It is the most important Islamic

holiday. People dress in their finest clothes, decorate their homes with

lights, give treats to children and visit with family and friends.

• It is referred to as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”.

• A sense of generosity and gratitude colors

these festivities. Muslims are obligated to share their blessings by feeding

the poor and making contributions to mosques.

• Pakistani women show their hands painted with henna as part of the

Eid-al-Fitr celebrations.

Eid ul-Adha

• Celebrates the occasion when Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son to show

his obedience to God (Allah).

• Muslims all around the world will celebrate this day, although it has particular

significance for pilgrims who at this time will be completing a pilgrimage (Hajj)

to Mecca (Makkah).

• The day begins with a sacrifice of an animal in commemoration of Abraham's

sacrifice of a lamb in place of his son. One-third of the meat is given to the

poor, and the rest shared by family and friends.

France

• Islam in France

• Islam is the second largest religion in France, with

approximately 4.2 million adherents, after 45 million

adherents to Catholicism, and before Protestantism (1

million), Buddhism (600 000), Judaism (525 000) and

French Eastern Orthodoxy (150 000) (data: 2000-2003).

In 2003, between 4 and 5 million people of Muslim

extraction live in France: over 35% come from Algeria,

25% from Morocco, 10% from Tunisia (all former French

colonies). Some estimate the number of French converts

to be around 30,000.

• All these statistics must be taken with some caution: the

French Government does not tally religion in its census

information and other official polls.

United States

Islam in the United States

It is estimated that there are more than 5-7

million Muslims in the United States. Like

Judaism and Christianity, Islamic

organizations in the United States are not

unified; there are many organizations and

groups that work to promote various forms

of Islam.

Canada

• Islam in Canada

• Canada has a small, but growing Muslim population.

There are no official number as to how many Muslims

live in Canada, but it is today estimated at around

600,000. Most Canadian Muslims are either recent

immigrants to Canada, or the children of recent

immigrants. There are two distinct streams of Muslim

immigration to Canada. For decades many skilled

professionals have emigrated to Canada to pursue a

higher standard of living. There have also been large

numbers of refugees. In the 1980s Canada became a

haven for those fleeing the Lebanese Civil War. In the

1990s the largest source was Somalia.

Germany

• Islam in Germany

• Together with the work migration of the 1960s from

Turkey, Islam became a visible religion in Germany. As

of 2004, there are 3 million Muslims (3.2% of the

population). After the Lutheran and Roman Catholic

confessions Muslims are now the third largest organized

religious group in the country. Since Islam is not a

traditional religion in Germany and since most problems

with enforced migration into Germany focus on this

religious point, currently there are several intensive

disputes about the place of Islam in the German state

and society.

China

• Islam in China

• China has a great number of Muslims.

Some say it's 2% of the total population

(1,2 billion). The biggest Muslim group in

China are the Hui. Other Muslim groups in

China include the Uighurs and the

Kazakhs They live, for the most part, in

Northeast-China in the autonomous region

Xinjiang.

Malaysia

• Islam in Malaysia

• Islam is the official religion of Malaysia. All

of the Malays are born Muslim. Once

become a Muslim, one cannot change this

belief for the whole life. 70% of Malaysia is

Muslim as Malays are the majority in

Malaysia population. There are mosques

everywhere for Muslims to worship Allah

(God) every Friday.

The Netherlands

• Islam in the Netherlands

• The Dutch Islamic population is very diverse.

According to the latest numbers of CBS, a

Dutch government ruled company, 5,7% of the

total Dutch population is a Muslim.

• There is a great amount of controversy

involving Islam in the Netherlands.

India

Islam spread from the West throughout South

Asia, from the early eighth century, to become

the largest minority religion in India. In fact, with

101.5 million Muslims (12.1 percent of the

population), India has at least the fourth largest

Muslim population in the world (after Indonesia

with 174.3 million, Pakistan with 124 million, and

Bangladesh with 103 million; some analysts put

the number of Indian Muslims even higher--128

million in 1994, which would give India the

second largest Muslim population in the world).

Africa

Africans profess a wide variety of religious beliefs.

The two most widespread religious groups of

Africa, Christianity and Islam have their roots in

Southwest Asia. Approximately 40% of all

Africans are Christians and another 40%

Muslims. Roughly 20% of Africans primarily

follow indigenous African Religions. A small

number of Africans also have beliefs from the

Judaic tradition, such as the Beta Israel and

Lemba.

The land variously called Israel and Palestine at different times in

history, is a small, (10,000 square miles at present) land at the

eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. During its long history,

its area, population and ownership varied greatly. The present

state of Israel formally occupies all the land from the Jordan

river to the Mediterranean ocean, bounded by Egypt in the

south, Lebanon in the north, and Jordan in the East. The

recognized borders of Israel constitute about 78% of the land.

The remainder is divided between land occupied by Israel since

the 1967 6-day war and the autonomous regions under the

control of the Palestinian autonomy. The Gaza strip occupies an

additional 141 square miles south of Israel along the sea coast,

and is mostly under the control of the Palestinian authority with

small areas occupied by Israeli settlements
