SPECIAL TEACHING DEVELOPMENTS

Day One Leadership Community 2007

Served on a faculty team lead by Dr. Tom Carskadon to develop, design, and implement the initial Day One

Leadership Community.

Director, Day One Leadership Community 2008

The Day One Leadership Community is a living-learning community consisting of 286 freshmen from 59 different

majors; 49 Action Team Mentors; and 47 Community Service Agencies. All Day One students live together in

Cresswell Hall. Students are assigned to Action Teams to complete a project for a Community Service Agency. As

Director, I worked with the team of Drs. April Heiselt, Melissa Moore, and Cade Smith to review and enhance the

Day One Leadership Community and GLC1002.

The Day One Leadership Community 2008 Program Enhancements

 Day One Mission and Goals: Developed clearly articulated goals to guide each step of the program &

program enhancements.

 Day One Guidebook: Designed custom, 95-page, day-by-day guide of the activities, assignments, &

expectations for Day One students and ATMs.

 Day One Projects: Defined Projects clearly by their agency, purpose, scope, deliverables, service-hour

opportunities, & appropriateness for freshmen.

 Class Meeting Days Increased: Added Friday class time to allow for more AT work.

 Action Team Mentor Job Descriptions: Defined and streamlined ATM jobs around 4 primary activities,

including (1) meeting with their team on Mondays, (2) responding to weekly Discussions, (3) monitoring

and approving service-hours, and (4) participating in grading at the Day One Showcase.

 Action Team Mentors (ATMs): Recruited 49 MSU Faculty and Staff members to serve as mentors to each

Action Team of Day One Students.

 Community Partners (CPs): Recruited 47 Community Service organizations to host a Day One Action

Team project

 Action Team Composition: Assigned students to teams based on individual skills or experience.

 Weekly Discussion Questions: Designed weekly discussion questions to link students’ classroom content

to weekly project and service work.

 Custom Service Log Software: Worked with ITS to design custom service log system to track student

service work and have Action Team Members approve all service entries.

 Custom Day One Tab on OnCampus Portal: Worked with ITS and CTL to design custom tab on the

OnCampus portal for Day One students and Action Team Mentors. Updated site weekly with lecture

materials, notes, audio links, etc.

 Action Team Mentor and Community Partner Training: Trained ATMs and CPs on the specifics of

their roles in Day One on two training dates in August, 2008.

 Residence Hall Staff: Staffed Creswell Residence Hall primarily of Day One Alumni.

 On-site Assistant: Hired Day One assistant with office in Cresswell Hall for on-site service to students.

Field day to introduce Day One students to their teams by a 2-hour team-training event during Dawg Daze.

16

 ALHP Fellow Integration: Integrated the 26 ALHP Fellows into Day One with the ALHP Fellows

serving as an additional mentor to each Action Team.

 Policy: Created a series of policies (e.g. research, admissions, travel) to consistently guide program.

 Day One Showcase: Hosted 600 guests for the Day One Showcase to view the student projects.
