SPECIAL TEACHING DEVELOPMENTS
Day One Leadership Community 2007
Served on a faculty team lead by Dr. Tom Carskadon to develop, design, and implement the initial Day One
Leadership Community.
Director, Day One Leadership Community 2008
The Day One Leadership Community is a living-learning community consisting of 286 freshmen from 59 different
majors; 49 Action Team Mentors; and 47 Community Service Agencies. All Day One students live together in
Cresswell Hall. Students are assigned to Action Teams to complete a project for a Community Service Agency. As
Director, I worked with the team of Drs. April Heiselt, Melissa Moore, and Cade Smith to review and enhance the
Day One Leadership Community and GLC1002.
The Day One Leadership Community 2008 Program Enhancements
Day One Mission and Goals: Developed clearly articulated goals to guide each step of the program &
program enhancements.
Day One Guidebook: Designed custom, 95-page, day-by-day guide of the activities, assignments, &
expectations for Day One students and ATMs.
Day One Projects: Defined Projects clearly by their agency, purpose, scope, deliverables, service-hour
opportunities, & appropriateness for freshmen.
Class Meeting Days Increased: Added Friday class time to allow for more AT work.
Action Team Mentor Job Descriptions: Defined and streamlined ATM jobs around 4 primary activities,
including (1) meeting with their team on Mondays, (2) responding to weekly Discussions, (3) monitoring
and approving service-hours, and (4) participating in grading at the Day One Showcase.
Action Team Mentors (ATMs): Recruited 49 MSU Faculty and Staff members to serve as mentors to each
Action Team of Day One Students.
Community Partners (CPs): Recruited 47 Community Service organizations to host a Day One Action
Team project
Action Team Composition: Assigned students to teams based on individual skills or experience.
Weekly Discussion Questions: Designed weekly discussion questions to link students’ classroom content
to weekly project and service work.
Custom Service Log Software: Worked with ITS to design custom service log system to track student
service work and have Action Team Members approve all service entries.
Custom Day One Tab on OnCampus Portal: Worked with ITS and CTL to design custom tab on the
OnCampus portal for Day One students and Action Team Mentors. Updated site weekly with lecture
materials, notes, audio links, etc.
Action Team Mentor and Community Partner Training: Trained ATMs and CPs on the specifics of
their roles in Day One on two training dates in August, 2008.
Residence Hall Staff: Staffed Creswell Residence Hall primarily of Day One Alumni.
On-site Assistant: Hired Day One assistant with office in Cresswell Hall for on-site service to students.
Move-In Day: Welcomed parents and students to Cresswell Hall.
Day One Field Day: Designed custom team building curriculum and team facilitator’s guide for a Day one
Field day to introduce Day One students to their teams by a 2-hour team-training event during Dawg Daze.

ALHP Fellow Integration: Integrated the 26 ALHP Fellows into Day One with the ALHP Fellows
serving as an additional mentor to each Action Team.
Policy: Created a series of policies (e.g. research, admissions, travel) to consistently guide program.
Day One Showcase: Hosted 600 guests for the Day One Showcase to view the student projects.
Customized Weekly Lecture Material: Designed and delivered custom lectures unique to Day One.
Special Guests: Hosted Mr. Hayley Fiskackerly, CEO of Entergy Mississippi, as guest lecturer.
Assessments: Designed and conducted web-based, pre and post leadership assessment for Day One
students, as well as Day One Program assessments for, Day One Students, Action Team Mentors,
Community Partners, and ALHP Fellows.

Chickasaw is a non-profit group designed to develop community leaders for Chickasaw county and the
state of Mississippi. Leadership Chickasaw has a 16-year history with over 300 graduates. The classes of

Treasurer for the Golden Triangle Human Resource Association, 2003-2004, coordinated
membership for the 60+ member organization of human resource managers.
Treasurer for the MS State SHRM Council State Conference Committee: Assisted in hosting
the 2003 State conference in April at Philadelphia, MS for approximately 400 HR professionals
from the state of Mississippi. Responsible for overseeing the budget for the conference and

providing updated financial records for other committee members, as well as paying all conference
expenses. The conference earned a $27,000 profit.

MSU United Way, Division Leader for Academic Affairs, 2008, 2009: Coordinated with 15
units/colleges reporting to Academic Affairs for (1) recruitment or assignment of unit liaison, (2)
coordination of unit United Way Campaign, (3) implementation of unit United Way events, (4)
reporting of United Way contributions and pledges. 2-month campaign led to approximately
$50,000 raised in Academic Affairs for United Way.

leadership and teambuilding course, including a variety of groups from MSU including the Freshman Class
