STATE ELECTION COMMISSION PREPARES FOR CIVIC POLL IN
THE STATE.
There are 103 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State. The
term of 96 ULBs including 2 (two) Corporations will be completed by
September, 2008. Out of the said 103 ULBs, election to Paradeep
Municipality, Balimela NAC, Belpahar NAC, Sunabeda NAC, Burla
NAC, Rairakhol NAC & Kendrapara Municipality will be held
sometimes in 2010 and 2011.
On completion of Delimitation of Wards and Reservation of
Seats by the State Government the State Election Commission took
up the preparation of Electoral Roll on 29.02.2008 in the 96 ULBs i.e.
33 Municipalities, 61 NACs and 2 Corporations. The Commission had
convened a meeting of all political parties for discussion on
preparation of Electoral Roll on 25.2.2008.
On the orders of the Hon’ble High Court of Orissa the
preparation of Electoral Roll in respect of Cuttack Municipal
Corporation and Baripada Municipality was held up. The publication
of final Electoral Roll in respect of Bhubaneswar Municipal
Corporation is withheld in compliance to the order of the Hon’ble High
Court.
Apart from these in other 93 ULBs (34 Municipalities and 59
NACs) the Commission is now in a position to conduct the General
Election in 2008. The above 93 ULBs consists of 1579 numbers of
Wards out of which 158 are reserved for Scheduled Castes, 93 for
Scheduled Castes (Women), 111 for Scheduled Tribes, 47 for Schedule
Tribes (Women), 226 for Backward Class of Citizens, 115 for
Backward Class of Citizens (Women), 549 for Unreserved and 280 for
Unreserved (Women). The total number of letters of such 93 ULBs
comes to 26,30,313.
Out of the Chairpersons of the 93 ULBs, 9 are reserved for SC,
5 for SC(Women), 4 for ST, 2 for ST(Women), 11 for BCC, 7 for
BCC(Women), 37 for Unreserved and 18 for UR(Women).
The General Election to ULBs in the State will be conducted by
using Electronic Voting Machines for the first time in the State.
Meeting with Political parties.
The Commission has convened a meeting of all Political Parties
on 28.07.2008 for discussion on smooth conduct of General Election
to Urban Local Bodies, 2008.
Meeting with all District Magistrates & S.Ps.
The Commission has also convened a meeting of all District
Magistrates and Superintendents of Police on 04.08.2008 in the 3rd
floor Conference Hall of the Secretariat for discussion on various
matters relating to conduct of General Election to ULBs, 2008. Chief
Secretary and DG & IG of Police have been requested to attend the
meeting.
