The PARITY DEMOCRAT

A monthly record of developments which enhance democracy through women's empowerment

www.shequality.org

Vol 5 No 1 £ 5 US$ 10 ISSN 1367-6946 January 2001

Introduction

In this 49th issue of The Parity Democrat, I highlight the January 2001 dates from three of my

anniversary lists, 10 "Anniversaries of the Democracies", 11 "Centenaries of Distinguished Women of

History", and 150 "Birthdays of Distinguished Living Women". The list includes the centenaries of the

deaths both of Queen Victoria and the composer Giuseppe Verdi.

My banknote of the month is the 50 baht of Thailand issued on 28 April 2000 for the 50th

anniversary of the wedding of King Bhumipol and Queen Sirikit. In 1978, when working with the United

Nations, I had issued medals portraying Queen Sirikit, honoring her social and rural work, not least under

the aegis of the International Council of Women, whose 90th anniversary is commemorated on the medal

reverse. In 1980 the medal portrait, by Marie Louise Radziwill, was used on 5, 600 and 9000 baht coins

issued for the 48th birthday of Queen Sirikit, each anniversary divisible by 12 being considered

propitious in Thailand.

My attachment of the month is the table of contents for the fourth twelve-month period of The

Parity Democrat, from January to December 2000.
