NATO/SPSC WORKSHOP Environmental Aspects of Military Compounds Phase II Bad Neuenahr, Germany 29 – 31 May 2007 INVITATION Bonn, 29 January 2007 In May 2006 Austria and The Netherlands have organised the successful CCMS workshop "Environmental Aspects of Military Compounds” in Vienna, Austria. The workshop was visited by 69 participants from 25 different countries as well as by participants from five different NATO bodies: CCMS, SHAPE , NATO School Oberammergau, ENTEC and NAMSA. Based on the conclusions of the Vienna workshop a proposal for the second phase of the Compounds project has been worked out by the three co-directing countries: Germany, the Netherlands and the United States of America. The NATO “Committee on Science for Peace and Security” (formerly CCMS) has recently agreed to this proposal. The Compounds II project will consist of three workshops in the period Spring 2007 –Spring 2008. The Turkey (October 2007) and the third and final one (presumably) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (May 2008). first workshop will be held in Bad Neuenahr near Bonn in Germany (May 2007), the second one in Istanbul, The date for the workshop in Germany has been set on May 28-31, 2007. The objectives of the Compounds II project are the following: • • • • environmental aspects of military compounds to enhance interoperability. for a way forward. Identify a forum or system for a regular exchange of information and co-operation in the field of Evaluate the feasibility of implementing an EMS for deployed operations and prove recommendations Formulate a range of environmental (minimum) standards for compounds over the full range of NATOEnhance vertical and horizontal co-ordination and co-operation between the functional organisations (command, engineering, logistics, occupational health, medical, environmental, etc) at the led military operations. commencement of the planning cycle by providing a generic (annotated template) Environmental Annex for standardised NATO Operations Plan as pertains to environmental issues of compounds.
