The Math Curse Project
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to help students see where they are using math in their
1) Read the Math Curse book in class.
2) Students create their own Math Curses and a PowerPoint presentation.
Each student group will write 4 “Math Curses” that happen in their everyday lives. A
math curse is a problem a student has which involves mathematics.
Each math curse has a question at the very end that can be solved using mathematics.
Each math curse should include at least two operations.
The student groups will prepare a 5 slide power point to present their math curses.
Title slide (Title of presentation and your name)
Four Math Curse Slides (each slide must include a problem and a solution)
Students can add clip art as time and space permit.
Upon completion, students will show the power point in class and explain one math curse
(out of the four) in depth.
An example of a math curse:
“It takes me 10 minutes to shower, 3 minutes to brush my teeth, 10 minutes to get dressed and do
my hair, 10 minutes to eat breakfast and my bus comes at 7:05 AM. What time do I need to set
my alarm so that I can be on time?”
