           WELCOME TO THE 2006 THANET MUSIC AND DRAMA FESTIVAL!
The.Committee.hope.that.whatever.part.you.are.taking.in.our.Festival.you.have.an.enjoyable.and.
positive.experience.which.enhances.your.skills.and.enthusiasm.for.the.performing.arts..Our.‘mission’,.
as.a.festival,.is.simply.to.encourage.all.amateur.performers.–.whatever.their.age.or.proficiency..
We.aim.to.do.this.by.providing.them.with.a.performance.‘platform’,.a.professional.adjudicator.and.an.
audience..Audiences.play.an.important.role.in.the.development.of.performers’.abilities,.and.while.we.
are.very.glad.to.see.members.of.the.general.public.come.and.watch.the.sessions,.we.also.hope.that.
performers.themselves.(and.their.families.&.friends).stay.to.support.those.in.the.classes.after.them,.
and.those.performing.on.other.days.or.in.other.sections..Festivals.such.as.ours.aspire.to.serve.as.an.
interesting.and.educational.experience.for.the.audience.too;.we.hope.you.find.this.so,.but.please.let.

Once.again.arrangements.have.been.made.to.hold.the.winners.concert.and.prize-giving.ceremony.
in.the.Main.Hall.of.the.Winter.Gardens,.Margate,.on.Tuesday.2st.March..We.will.ensure.that.the.
pace.remains.swift.throughout.the.evening.so.that.even.the.youngest.prize-winners.get.a.chance.for.
their.5.seconds’.fame..There.will.be.a.small.entry.charge.but.plenty.of.free.parking.on.the.lower.
promenade.with.stairs.and.a.wheelchair.ramp.to.the.Main.Hall..Soft.drinks,.ices.and.bar.refreshments.
will.be.available..Come.along.and.make.this.evening.something.special.for.all.of.the.performers,.and.
enjoyable.for.yourself.and.your.family.&.friends.

The.Festival.is.totally.dependent.on.voluntary.helpers,.especially.the.Committee.who.work.all.the.year.
round.to.ensure.the.smooth.running.of.the.various.events:.however.we.always.need.extra.helpers,.
particularly.in.March.when.the.Festival.is.taking.place..Advice.and.feedback.is.always.welcome,.but.
offers.of.assistance.are.even.more.so!.Please.contact.the.Secretary.or.Chairman.

Finally,.we.have.discovered.that.many.children.who.might.otherwise.like.to.take.part.in.the.Festival.
have.not.been.able.to.do.so,.simply.because.their.teachers.are.too.busy.with.other.things..There.is.no.
reason.though.why.they.should.not.enter.independently.–.just.for.fun,.as.well.as.for.the.experience.
of.performing.to.an.independent.assessor.outside.the.exam.system.–.and.we.hope.that.you.will.
encourage.them.to.do.so..Anyone.who.wants.to.be.put.on.our.mailing.list.for.next.year’s.Syllabus.

Audiences are welcome at all events and their support and presence is greatly
appreciated by the performers, particularly in classes where the entries are small.
The cost of entry to a three hour session is only £1, or £2 for the whole day! Children
aged 14 and under are free. Not only can you enjoy three hours of music making,
dance or drama but you have the opportunity to hear a professional giving valuable
advice and guidance. Please help us to make every class an ‘event’.

N.B. Entry to dance events is £2 for the whole day or any part thereof.

    Elizabeth.Angel.entered.the.Royal.College.of.Music.as.an.exhibitioner.and.studied.the.
    ’cello.and.piano.as.joint.first.studies.with.Harvey.Phillips.and.Hilda.Klein..She.achieved.
    teaching.diplomas.in.both.instruments.and.a.performance.ARCM.on.the.’cello,.and.
    also.won.the.first.prize.for.’cello..She.continued.her.studies.with.Pierre.Fournier.in.
    Geneva.on.a.Countess.of.Munster.award,.and.was.chosen.to.represent.Great.Britain.
    on.an.International.Course.in.Santiago.di.Compostella..She.also.attended.Master.
    Classes.in.Switzerland.taken.by.Pablo.Casals,.and.appeared.on.television.in.a.Paul.
    Tortelier.Master.Class..From.963,.when.she.made.a.very.successful.debut.at.the.
    Wigmore.Hall,.she.freelanced.in.London,.dividing.her.time.between.solo.playing,.
    chamber.music,.chamber.orchestras.and.teaching..She.has.taught.from.962.at.the.
    Junior.Department.of.the.Royal.College.of.Music.and.the.Roehampton.and.West.
    London.Institutes..She.also.has.a.private.practice.of.pupils.ranging.from.5.to.70!
    In.966.she.married.Richard.Bureau,.violinist,.and.they.formed.the.Bureau.Piano.Trio.

    first.performances..She.also.plays.in.the.Stamford.Piano.Quartet..Miss.Angel.has.
    been.an.Associated.Board.examiner.since.986.and.is.also.much.in.demand.as.a.
    sympathetic.and.helpful.adjudicator.for.the.Federation..From.993.she.has.toured.
    the.Far.East.for.the.Associated.Board,.including.Hong.Kong,.Taiwan,.Singapore.and.
    Malaysia.

DANCE: Claire Jennings B.Phil (Hons) LRAD AISTD (NDB)
   Miss.Jennings.received.her.training.at.The.Royal.Academy.of.Dancing,.where.she.
   gained.her.Licentiateship..More.recently.she.gained.her.B.Phil.(Hons).in.Ballet.and.
   Contextual.Studies..She.taught.extensively.in.both.her.own.schools.and.private.
   establishments.for.3.years,.as.well.as.choreographing.both.amateur.shows.and.
   professional.cabarets.and.showcases..Whilst.coaching.at.Richmond.Ice.Rink,.she.also.
   choreographed.the.opening.sequence.of.Robin.Cousins’s.TV.Spectacular.
   Miss.Jennings.is.currently.in.the.last.stages.of.completing.an.MA.in.Ballet.Studies.at.
   Roehampton.Institute,.London.and.is.enjoying.presenting.workshops,.adjudicating.
   and.working.for.Richmond.Theatre.
SPEECH & DRAMA: Patricia Hammond LLAM, PGCA
    Patricia.Hammond.has.been.a.teacher.of.speech.and.drama.since.968.having.
    established.the.Patricia.Hammond.Theatre.School.with.her.late.husband..She.has.
    now.transferred.the.ownership.of.the.school.in.Kent.to.a.well-qualified.ex-student..
    Many.of.her.students.have.worked.professionally.in.theatre,.television,.film.and.radio.
    appearing.in.numerous.productions.in.Europe,.London.and.the.provinces.including.
    the.London.City.Ballet,.The.London.Palladium.Pantomime,.The.National.Theatre.and.
    Royal.Shakespeare.Company..Many.ex-students.have.now.opened.their.own.schools.
    of.performing.arts.
    Patricia.has.been.examining.and.adjudicating.for.a.great.many.years.and.travels.
    frequently.as.an.examiner.for.The.London.Academy.of.Music.and.Dramatic.Art,.
    most.recently.to.Kenya,.California,.Singapore,.Ireland,.Scotland.and.Hong.Kong.and.
    Sri.Lanka..She.is.an.adjudicator.member.of.the.British.and.International.Federation.of.
    Festivals.

     Improvisation.at.the.LAMDA.McCowan.Theatre.and.has.co-written.with.Alison.Muir.
     a.teaching.book.‘Mime.and.Improvisation’.which.has.been.published.by.LAMDA.
     She.is.actively.involved.in.community.arts.and.serves.on.a.number.of.consultative.
     panels.relating.to.conservation,.arts.projects.and.animal.welfare.and.has.also.served.
     as.Drama.Officer.for.Bromley.Arts.Council..Patricia.is.very.much.looking.forward.to.
     adjudicating.in.Broadstairs.(one.of.her.favourite.towns).once.again.



PIANOFORTE: Graeme Humphrey ARAM
    Graeme.Humphrey.was.awarded.an.Associated.Board.Scholarship.on.the.piano.from.
    New.Zealand.to.study.at.the.Royal.Academy.of.Music..While.at.the.RAM.he.
    developed.particular.interests.in.chamber.music,.accompanying.and.teaching,.and.
    has.enjoyed.a.career.based.on.these.activities..He.has.broadcast.many.times.on.BBC.
    Radio.3.(principally.in.the.piano.trio.repertoire).and.has.performed.at.the.Bath.and.
    Harrogate.Festivals,.the.Purcell.Room.and.Wigmore.Halls.in.London.as.well.as.at.
    many.music.clubs.in.the.United.Kingdom.
    In.addition.to.this.work.he.has.been,.since.974,.a.Professor.of.Piano.at.the.Royal.
    Academy.of.Music,.and.has.been.very.actively.involved.in.festival.adjudicating.and.
    examining;.this.work.has.taken.him.to.Hong.Kong,.Malaysia,.Singapore,.Germany,.
    New.Zealand,.Australia,.France,.Sabah,.Sri.Lanka,.Japan.and.Ghana..He.is.also.very.
    active.in.the.giving.of.seminars.to.teachers,.both.in.the.UK,.and.abroad,.and.
    maintains.a.substantial.teaching.practice.in.London.with.pupils.of.all.ages.and.stages..
    In.997.he.was.elected.Warden.of.the.Private.Teachers’.Section.of.the.Incorporated.
    Society.of.Musicians.and.in.2002.was.elected.President.of.the.RAM.Club..Graeme.
    Humphrey.is.an.adjudicator.member.of.the.British.and.International.Federation.of.
    Festivals.


VOCAL & CHORAL: Prudence Lloyd ARCM, AGSM, FRSA
   Prudence.Lloyd.was.born.in.London.and.studied.harp.and.singing.at.the.Royal.
   College.of.Music..Then.followed.a.period.at.the.Guildhall.School.of.Music,.where.
   she.specialized.in.singing.and.later.won.the.Silver.Medal.of.the.GSM.–.the.highest.
   musical.honour.of.the.year.
   She.quickly.established.herself.as.a.soloist.in.oratorio.throughout.the.United.
   Kingdom,.including.performances.in.the.Royal.Festival,.Queen.Elizabeth.and.Royal.
   Albert.Halls.in.London,.and.the.Fairfield.Halls.in.Croydon,.as.well.as.many.cathedrals..
   She.has.also.sung.on.many.occasions.abroad,.having.sung.in.most.European.
   countries..She.has.a.particular.fondness.for.the.music.of.Henry.Purcell.and.his.
   contemporaries,.and.her.repertoire.has.covered.a.wide.range.of.periods.and.styles,.
   including.performances.of.Victorian.Parlour.Songs.with.the.television.personality.
   Richard.Baker..For.some.years.she.was.a.full-time.member.of.the.BBC.Singers,.and.
   has.had.the.privilege.of.working.with.such.composers.as.Messiaen,.Boulez,.
   Stockhausen.and.Henze..Since.retiring.from.the.concert.platform.in.994.she.now.
   concentrates.on.teaching,.and.adjudicating.throughout.the.United.Kingdom.and.
   Ireland..In.999.she.adjudicated.at.the.Hong.Kong.Festival.

                                    CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
Thanet.Music.and.Drama.Festival.(“TMDF”).aims.to.provide.a.safe.and.caring.environment.for.all.its.
participants,.and.to.conform.to.current.child.protection.legislation..The.following.constitutes.TMDF’s.child.
protection.policy:

.. Purpose.
    The.purpose.of.the.festival.is.to.advance.the.education.of.the.public.in.the.performing.arts,.by.holding.
    an.annual.competitive.festival.and.presenting.public.performances.

2... Environment.
     It.is.our.policy.under.the.Protection.of.Children.Act.999.to.involve.parents/guardians/carers.and.
     teachers.in.partnership.with.us.to.ensure.a.safe.environment.at.the.festival,.insofar.as.it.is.reasonably.
     practicable.

3... Application.
     This.policy.relates.both.to.children.under.the.age.of.8.and.to.those.vulnerable.adults.who.are.
     identified.to.the.organizers.prior.to.their.arrival.at.the.festival..The.festival.recognizes.the.needs.of.
     children.who.are.disabled.or.from.ethnic.minorities,.and.will.seek.to.meet.any.specific.needs.notified.
     to.the.festival.in.advance.by.parents/guardians/carers.or.teachers.

4... Personnel.
     TMDF.is.run.entirely.by.volunteers,.all.of.whom.have.independent.references.and.are.briefed.about.
     the.terms.of.this.policy..Should.any.problem.arise.regarding.the.terms.of.this.policy,.it.should.be.
     notified.to.a.TMDF.Committee.member,.identifiable.by.badge,.who.will.take.appropriate.action.in.a.
     discreet.manner.

5... Preparation.
     All.participants.in.this.festival.will.be.expected.to.have.seen.this.policy..In.accordance.with.this.policy,.
     it.is.essential.that.parents/guardians/carers.not.personally.attending.the.festival.be.satisfied.that.their.
     children.etc..are.accompanied.and.adequately.supervised.by.responsible.adults.acting.on.their.behalf;.
     TMDF.staff.will.not.undertake.this.rôle..With.group.entries,.the.group.leader.must.ensure.that.all.
     parents/guardians/carers.are.aware.of.this.policy..Each.person.signing.the.entry.form.thereby.takes.full.
     responsibility.for.those.entered.by.the.form.

6... Changing areas
     It.is.emphasized.that.the.article.above.applies.equally.to.changing.areas,.i.e..that.responsibility.remains.
     with.the.supervising.adult.in.each.case..Property.left.unattended.is.also.not.the.responsibility.of.TMDF.

7... Photography.
     No.photography.(including.video.photography).is.permitted.at.the.festival,.other.than.by.accredited.
     members.of.the.press..Such.photography.will.always.take.place.in.a.public.place..Any.parent/.
     guardian/carer.not.wishing.the.individual(s).in.their.care.to.be.photographed.must.notify.the.
     photographer.in.good.time.

8... Legislation supporting this policy.
     The.Children.Act.989,.The.Police.Act.997,.The.Data.Protection.Act.998,.The.Human.Rights.Act.
     998,.The.Protection.of.Children.Act.999,.The.Criminal.Justice.&.Court.Services.Act.2000.

9... Review.
     The.TMDF.Committee.will.review.this.policy.at.regular.intervals,.consulting.the.British.&.International.
     Federation.of.Festivals.for.support.and.advice.on.best.practice.
