Workshop Hot Links for Digital Storytelling
Let’s Make A Digital Story:
The Fifty Tools
Below you will find 50+ web tools you can use to create your own web-based story. Again, the mission is not to
review or try every single one (that would be madness, I know), but pick one that sounds interesting and see if
you can produce something. I have used each tool to produce an example of Dominoe story and links are
provided, where available, to examples by other people. Please share your own examples or thoughts in the
discussion area of this wiki.
But before rummaging around the toolbox, have you done your prep work? Do you have your story idea or
presentation concept outlined, developed? This should be on paper or in a document file or scribbled on the
back of a napkin, but do not rely on making it up as you go! If not, go back 2 spaces and do this now. Next- do
you have your media assets available, your images, video clips, audio files-- if not go find your media now.
Slideshow Tools
Generates content that allows linear playback of a series of images, some with ability to add audio. But these
are primarily organized around photos or graphics.

captions for each image. Overlay comic bubbles with text. Code to embed in blogs, web site. Options to have

on a timeline, and might include text, hyperlinks, images, etc.
13. Dandelife
http://dandelife.com Generate a timeline of any kind of event in your life, write as blog-like entry, apply tags,

http://www.zude.com/ Zude is more of a personal web portal, a place you can add media, web sites, text, and
customize the layout. Media can be added simply by dropping them in from another web browser window. The
feature site is quite broad, and at the same time, rather complex to use. Lots of right clicks to get menus.

Comic Tools
Create your own comic strips or cartoons using imported media or available images. You might need ability to
sketch, and these are generally shorter pieces, and were much more of a challenge to fit a story into.
23. gnomz
http://en.gnomz.com/ This is a fairly low level tool that will not create any visual masterpieces, but there is an
interesting challenge in trying to compose with a limited tool set. It creates those pixel flat icon like figures.
You create a cartoon avatar, and you pull from a library of others, and enter their speech or thought bubbles, as
well as select backgrounds. The site is a bit challenging to figure out since it is in French, but click the flag in
the top right to toggle the site to English.

complex of an interface.

stories in interesting ways.
36. Flickr Tell a Story in 5 Frames
http://flickr.com/groups/visualstory/ "Tell a Story in 5 Frames has two important parts. The first part is creating

weave a story together linked linearly or branching, by using these "hotspots" on images
Dominoe (look for "next" links in upper right)
40. Pictures with Stories Flickr Group
http://www.flickr.com/groups/stories/ "Your photograph must be accompanied by a story. The story must be at
least five sentences long and MUST be true - no poems or fiction please. Tell us something about your
photograph, why you took it, the story behind the photograph." This is a loose fit in the 50s as it is more aimed
at sharing te thoughts behind a picture.

the possibility of "user error" on my part.

1. Outline a Story Idea
2. Find Some Media
3. Pick a Tool to Build Your Story
Outline a Story Idea
http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/file/view/50+Ways.pdf
How Do I Come Up With a Story Idea?
This workshop (nor this presenter) pretend to be an authority on this subject, and for the purposes of
this workshop, you need to think of a rather short concept that can use perhaps 4-8 images, text,
maybe audio or music to bring a story to life on the web. You will want to pick something quickly, and
not worry about it being worthy of a national art prize (!) The purpose here is to experience the
creative aspects provided by the web tools. And remember that you will need to find images and
other media from public collections that can represent the characters, places, or metaphors in your
story.
. It was not long ago that producing multimedia digital content required expensive equipment and
technical expertise; we are at the point now where we can do very compelling content creation with
nothing more complex than a web browser. And imagination… Following this guide you will:
Design a basic story concept that can be created in a web 2.0 tool using images, audio, and/or
video.
Then create it quickly using one of 50+ different web tools that are free to use.
Plus, you will share in this wiki site your example and observations on the value of the tool
We are using the word "story" in a general sense; it may be a deeply personal one of the
digital
storytelling variety, or it may be a tale of a travel trip, or a simple multimedia presentation.
Try a Prompt
So if you are stuck for ideas, here are some prompts:
What was your favorite childhood pet?
Where was your most memorable vacation?
What topic most inspired you in grade school?
Where is a place in the world you'd like to visit?
What is the most adventurous thing you have done?
Who was an influential authority in your subject discipline?
Or just describe a collection of things such as
o Five attributes of a great writer
o The top technology gadgets of the future
o Most important discoveries in your field
o Favorite cars, vegetables, flowers, tools
o Collection of things that don't belong
It need not be an epic or a best seller! Think short, and think of something that is going to have
media, especially images that can describe your elements, especially if they have metaphors.
So, let's say I try the question on "Where is a place in the world you'd like to visit?". This is how I
might sketch out my story as an outline.
I've never been to Africa, but wish to go on a safari
One day I will fly to say, Kenya, and say head out to the bush country, with a set of trusty
guides
I will see elephants up close
We will have a close call with a lion
The nights will bring campfires, stories, and camaraderie
As I return home, I begin to wonder about the own wilderness in my own land, and if I
appreciate it as much as a strange land.
