Understanding Disorders Caused by Specific Genes (20 pts.)
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosmal recessive disorder on chromosome 7. Using
your text and notes respond to the prompts below to explore how abnormal DNA
base sequences directly result in a genetic disorder causing sickness or death.
How does CF relate to the following terms we have studied (include a specific link
between CF and the term):
1. DNA
2. Mutations. What type of mutation leads to cystic fibrosis?
3. Transcription and translation
4. Amino Acids
5. Proteins
6. Primary, secondary, tertiary and quarternary structure (treat as one term)
7. Cell (plasma) membrane.
8. Protein channel.
9. Facilitated diffusion
10. Homeostasis.
11. In the space below create a diagram or flow chart that shows the major events
that lead to CF in humans. Be sure the diagram or chart is labeled and provides
enough information for someone unfamiliar with CF to understand what causes the
disorder.
12. Lastly, compare and contrast CF and sickle cell disease. You may use a âTâ
chart or Venn diagram to organize your response.
