St.Vincent

de Paul Center

St. Vincent de Paul Center, a ministry of the Daughters of Charity, is a social service

agency in Lincoln Park. For almost 100 years, St. Vincent’s has been committed to

serving the working poor in Chicago. Our clients come from nearly 50 neighborhoods

throughout the city. We have three programs at the Center: Child Development,

Homeless Outreach and Senior Services.

Our NAEYC accredited Child Development program and our School-Age progam

provide education to more than 430 children from 3 months to 13 years of age.

The Homeless Outreach program is focused on empowering the City’s vulnerable

3

population through providing emergency aid, food bags, clothing, access to shower

facilities, education and job training. We also help over 100 low-income seniors

remain independent in their homes by assisting them with transportation, shopping,

paying bills and friendly companionship.

Without the help of generous donors, volunteers and staff, St. Vincent’s would not be

able to provide these services that empower those most in need to reach their greatest

potential.

Early Childhood Development

Julian & Jovan’s Story

Finding quality, affordable childcare has not been easy for the Quizhpe Family. Before Julian and

Jovan came to St. Vincent’s two years ago, they had attended three different child care facilities,

none of which seemed to be the right fit. Then, they found St. Vincent de Paul Center. The

Quizhpe’s found comfort in the year-round support the Center provides to families from nearly

50 neighborhoods in Chicago. From the playgrounds and music room, to the creative curriculum

designed to nurture each child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development, they felt

right at home.

“We used to send the boys to another school, but I was not pleased until now,” says Juan Quizhpe,

father of Julian and Jovan. Since their arrival at St. Vincent de Paul Center’s Early Childhood

Development Program, Juan has seen an improvement in the boys’ ability to learn, as well as express

themselves in a healthy, positive manner.

The boys are actively engaged in all the wonderful activities St. Vincent’s has to offer, like

educational field trips, outings to neighborhood parks, art education and athletic activities. Jovan,

four, participates in the Center’s Pre-Kindergarten Program, designed to prepare preschoolers for

the transition from daycare to school. Six-year-old Julian is enrolled in the School-Age Program,

and last year he excelled in the Social Skills Group, a program facilitated by DePaul University

graduate students and clinicians, focusing on helping children learn impulse control, self-regulation,

and positive social interaction skills. Juan also takes advantage of the Center’s parenting workshops,

4

like early literacy, early attachment and bonding and managing parental stress.

Regarding St. Vincent’s and speaking for his family, Juan says, “I wouldn’t change a thing. I love it! I

wish a place like this had been around me when I was growing up.”

Homeless Outreach Services

Wade’s Story

St. Vincent de Paul Center’s Homeless Outreach program is a key resource for people who are

homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The program provides a critical link and safety net for

men, women and families who are without shelter, food, clothing and other basic necessities for

living.

Homeless Outreach is a place where anyone in need can come and feel welcomed and be treated

with dignity and respect while receiving support during a very difficult time in their lives. In

September 2001, Wade Hughes found himself living on the streets, drinking coffee at McDonald’s

to stay warm. Eight years later, he now has a job cooking for a retirement community and lives in

an apartment, thanks, in part, to the support from Homeless Outreach services.

Wade grew up on the west side of Chicago and attended two years of college before joining the

work force. After several years working a variety of jobs, he ended up without employment or a

home. Even though he was homeless, Wade didn’t turn to drugs or alcohol. Instead, he kept his

faith and stuck to coffee. He spent a lot of his time in libraries and went to mass at least once a

week, but he still faced hard times living in the streets. “I slept under a tunnel that was near the

Lincoln Park conservatory when it rained or snowed. I usually slept outdoors – I had a blanket, but

there were some mornings where I woke up at 3 am and would start walking around Chicago to try

to stay warm.”

Wade came to St. Vincent’s Homeless Outreach Program in 2002 and took advantage of its shower

facilities, mailing address, clothes and computer access to search for jobs. He also met regularly

with Outreach Coordinator Ron Hargrave, who assisted him in filling out the application for the

Heartland Human Care Stable Future Housing Program. Through Heartland’s services, Wade was

able to obtain housing, go through their job training program and attend career fairs.

Wade has held his job as a server at the retirement community for over a year and, thanks to his

good health and clean record, has maintained residence at his apartment. He also still volunteers

from time to time in Outreach and is a friendly face to the Center. Wade says he’s happy to finally

live by himself and to be able to work at the retirement home, and credits his faith for getting where

he is today.

6 “I love my job and I love my seniors. Four walls and a roof, going to mass, doing volunteer work,

that’s what I like. And having a steady job until I’m financially well-off for retirement.”

Wade is just one example of how St. Vincent’s serves out our mission to help those most in need to

reach their greatest potential.

Senior Services

Angie’s Story

St. Vincent’s Senior Services Program is a comprehensive and holistic approach to elderly

independence and empowerment. Senior Services provides home visits, well-being phone calls,

doctor visits, transportation and energy assistance to those who are unable to do so themselves, like

Senior Services Client Angie Krolicki.

For Angie, family comes first, so when she, her husband and siblings began receiving services from

St. Vincent’s over two years ago, she felt right at home. Angie said, “It’s difficult to get to the many

medical appointments a family of four siblings has each month.  It’s hard for us to walk to doctors’

visits.  None of our children live close enough to drive us, and taking a cab really adds up.”

Angie’s sister, Rosie, loves the visits from their St. Vincent’s caseworkers as well. “We really

appreciate them, the whole family does, and the girls are always here for us when we need them; if it

weren’t for them, we’d be waiting for the bus on the corner!”

Having the ability to remain in their family home as they have for 30 years is extremely important

to Angie’s family. She and her siblings are proud to have raised one another from youth after the

untimely death of their parents. The sense of empowerment, pride and closeness that radiates from

this family is remarkable, and we at St. Vincent de Paul Center are thrilled to provide them with

what they need to stay happy, healthy and, most of all, together.

Volunteer Spotlight

Pete and Barb DeBerge’s Story

Like many of our loyal volunteers and friends, Barb and Pete DeBerge came to St. Vincent de Paul

Center through their South Side Beverly connections. They began serving the seniors, children

and homeless in the ’90s, and have become an integral part of the Center in multiple ways for the

past decade. As members of the Fleur de Lis, Finance, Development and Major Gifts committees,

Fleur de Lis Mitten Tree knitter, Leadership Circle donors and friends, they clearly demonstrate the

Vincentian spirit.

Pete joined the Major Gifts Committee when it started to raise funds for the new building during

the Building with Hope Campaign. Before he said yes to joining, Pete decided to spend a Saturday

morning at the Center with Sister Katie. “Since then, I haven’t been able to say no.” From there, he

joined the Advisory and Development Board in 2002 and has been a member ever since.

Pete said the fun part of their involvement is Barb’s contributions for the Fleur de Lis Mitten Tree.

As a talented knitter, Barb had been donating Irish knit sweaters to the silent auction, which were

always a big hit. However, last year she decided that she could do more by providing mittens for the

children at the Center.

“When these kids are playing on a playground, their hands are cold.  It doesn’t matter the age, it

doesn’t matter their socioeconomic level – all of the children need a pair of mittens to go outside.”

Barb started by asking her knitting group to help her, and from there the Mitten Tree was created

from the help of many volunteers.

The Mitten Tree was not only successful, but a lot of fun. In the end, the Mitten Tree raised more

than $3,000. Barb was surprised it was such a success. “I thought it would be a nice little add-in to

the auction, but it turned out that people were way more excited than I thought they’d be. It was

also very rewarding because people were so generous and appreciative.”

And the knitting helps more than just the children. Barb met Helen, a woman who loves to knit,

and knits beautifully, but didn’t have enough money to buy supplies. She offered to help Barb with

the mittens, so Barb was able to tell her friends who wanted to help, but couldn’t knit, to just buy

yarn for Helen. This partnership resulted in 60 pairs. “She was ready to start knitting a week after

the FDL last year. It fills a need for her as well as helps the Center.”

Since they got involved, Pete and Barb have felt like their involvement with St. Vincent’s has

become a family affair – the volunteers and fellow Board members have been like an extended

family. “It’s been extremely humbling for me, and it’s been a privilege for both of us to be a part of

that group,” said Pete. It’s especially rewarding to them to see the second generation of A&D Board

10

members getting involved. Their son Mike joined the Associate Board and helped with fundraising

for the Center for a year, until he moved out of the area.

St. Vincent de Paul Center is grateful for all the DeBerge’s have done for our vulnerable children,

homeless and seniors. To them, the reward from giving far exceeds anything they ever gave. “What

would we do if we didn’t have St. Vincent’s?”

Thank you, Barb and Pete, for your loyalty, commitment and support of St. Vincent’s through the

years. What would we do if we didn’t have you?

Letter from Carrie Callas, Executive Director

Dear Friends,

The need for our programs and for St. Vincent’s to continue to provide quality services to

those less fortunate has always been evident. This year, we completed a needs assessment

study with UIC to look at the client and community profile for our three programs – child

development, homeless outreach and senior services. Having this information in front of

us provides both updated and accurate data to prove why we are so essential to our Chicago

community.

Serving over 400 children in child development from nearly 50 communities throughout

Chicago, St. Vincent’s was able to offer new benefits to our children this year. We began

a new speech therapy program offered through the Northwestern University Speech and

Language Clinic.  While language is a critical aspect to a child’s development, for many

families it can be difficult and expensive to access speech services when necessary.  Also

starting this year, our after-school students now have the opportunity to participate in

Common Threads, a program that teaches low-income children to cook wholesome and

affordable meals through hands-on cooking classes, helping prevent childhood obesity and

reversing the trend of generations of non-cookers.

We served over 100 homebound, isolated senior clients this year. Two case workers

provided monthly well-being checks in addition to case management and transportation

services. Due in part to our support services, 96% of our clients were able to continue to live

independently in their homes.

This year in our homeless outreach program we served over 1,800 clients, providing services

including emergency food, financial assistance to prevent homelessness, case management,

and housing and employment and referrals, to name a

few. Affordable housing continues to be a challenging

issue in Chicago. Throughout this year, 17 clients were

successfully housed thanks, in part, to our advocacy and

assistance.

Overall, we served over 2,500 at-risk clients this year.

We thank you for all you do to support our critical

services for the Chicago community.

Sincerely,

St. Vincent de Paul Center

Letter from Bart Winters, CEO | Karen Kane, Board Chair

A courageous woman, at the end of a long struggle with a life-threatening disease, reflected

on her life and concluded with these simple words, “We are shaped and re-shaped by those

who have loved us.”

We are shaped and re-shaped by those who have loved us.

Anyone with even a passing acquaintance with either of our two sister agencies, St. Vincent

de Paul Center and Marillac Social Center, knows that those words ring true. We are

shaped and re-shaped by those who have loved us. When the Daughters of Charity

founded our two Centers almost one hundred years ago, it was not simply to offer services to

needy people, but to share God’s love with people and, in the process, to shape and re-shape

vulnerable, precious lives.

The legacy of the Daughters of Charity continues to be lived out at St. Vincent’s and

Marillac. From the fragile three-month-old child to the bewildered pregnant teen, from the

poor family unable to make ends meet to the senior living in isolation and loneliness, our

Centers exist for one purpose: to love those entrusted to our care. In the process, all of our

lives are shaped and re-shaped.

No one embodied this spirit more than Sr. Mary Ellen Creedon, D.C., who died this past

February. Sr. Mary Ellen had a long and distinguished career

as a Daughter of Charity. Her ministry was multi-faceted

and included nursing, working with migrants, outreach to the

poor, and administration. Her credentials included a Masters

in Public Administration from the University of Michigan.

But perhaps her greatest credential was having the heart of a

Disciple. That is what touched and shaped those she served and

those with whom she worked. St. Vincent’s was privileged to

have Sr. Mary Ellen from 1987 until she died this year.

In this Annual Report you have read stories about our Center

and the great work that goes on here. You have also seen

numbers that reflect the generosity of those who make this

work possible, as well as the challenges we face during difficult

economic times. Behind the stories and behind the numbers lies

the simple truth uttered by that brave woman at the end of her

life:

14 We are shaped and re-shaped by those who have loved us.

Thank you for being one of those whose love and generosity have

shaped us. We are who we are today because of the support and

commitment of

people like you.

Sincerely,
