Description of Data
Output Area Level
The Overall Economic Deprivation Measure
The overall Economic Deprivation Measure has two data columns:
The first data column is the Economic Deprivation Measure Score (in
green).
The second data column is the Rank of the Economic Deprivation
Measure (in blue). The OA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived, and
5022 the least deprived, on this overall measure.The Economic
Deprivation Measure was constructed by combining the seven
transformed domain scores, using the following weights, which are
proportional to the weights used in the overall MDM 2005:
* Income (41.7%)
* Employment (41.7%)
* Proximity to Services (16.6%)
The Three Domain Measures
Each of the domains has two data columns:
The first data column is the Domain Score (in green). This was
constructed by combining the indicators within that domain. The
second data column is the Rank of the Domain Score (in blue). The
OA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived, and 5022 the least
deprived, for each domain.
Super Output Area Level
The Overall Multiple Deprivation Measure 2005
The overall MDM 2005 has two data columns:
The first data column is the Multiple Deprivation Measure Score (in
green).
The second data column is the Rank of the Multiple Deprivation
Measure (in blue). The SOA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived,
and 890 the least deprived, on this overall measure.
The MDM 2005 was constructed by combining the seven transformed
domain scores, using the following weights:
* Income (25%)
* Employment (25%)
* Health Deprivation and Disability (15%)
* Education, Skills and Training (15%)
* Proximity to Services (10%)
* Crime and Disorder (5%)
* Living Environment (5%)
The Seven Domain Measures
Each of the domains has two data columns:
The first data column is the Domain Score (in green). This was
constructed by combining the indicators within that domain. The
second data column is the Rank of the Domain Score (in blue). The
SOA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived, and 890 the least
deprived, for each domain.
IDAC and IDAOP Measures
Both Measures have two data columns:
The first data column is the IDAC Measure Score (in green). The
second data column is the Rank of the IDAC Measure Score (in blue).
The same information is presented for the IDAOP Measure. The SOA
with a rank of 1 is the most deprived, and 890 the least deprived, for
each Measure.
Local Government District Level
Six summary measures of the overall NI MDM 2005 have been
produced at LGD level describing differences between LGDs. The
summary measures at LGD level focus on different aspects of
multiple deprivation in the area. No single summary measure is
favoured over another, as there is no single best way of describing or
comparing LGDs.

Employment Scale
Average of SOA ranks
Average of SOA scores
There are twenty-six LGDs in Northern Ireland. For each measure
each LGD is given a rank and score (with the exception of Extent, as
explained below). For presentation, a rank of 1 indicates that the
LGD is the most deprived according to the measure, and 26 is the
least deprived.
Parliamentary Constituency Level
In addition to creating six LGD level summaries of the NI MDM 2005,
these six summaries have also been produced for the eighteen
Parliamentary Constituencies in Northern Ireland. The methodologies
used were identical to those described for the LGDs above.
Please Note
All scores are presented to two decimal places. In some cases SOAs
with apparently the same score will be given different ranks,
according to their actual score.
These Measures have been constructed by the Social Disadvantage
Research Centre at Oxford University. These figures are estimates
and no warranty is given as to the accuracy or comprehensiveness of
the data. All figures can only be reproduced if the source (Northern
Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, 2005) is fully acknowledged.
Time Period
Data used within the research primarily relates to 2003.
Details of the information held on this dataset are outlined
below:
Methodology
Information on the methodological procedures used in collecting data
for the 2005 Measures of deprivation in NI may be found in the NI
MDM 2005 report available at www.nisra.gov.uk.
Geographic Referencing
The individual records are geo-referenced by a postcode. There are
just under 50,000 current distinct domestic postcodes in Northern
Ireland, and each covers about 15 households on average. The
postcode can thus identify the geographic location of each income
support household to quite a high degree of accuracy, and was used
to place households in Super Output Areas and Output Areas. This
research used a lookup table called the Central Postcode Directory
that allocates postcodes to SOAs (and OAs) on the basis of the
location of the centroid of all addresses within the postcode. Thus, all
addresses with a given postcode are allocated to the same SOA (or
OA).
Disclosure Control Methods
Disclosure control methods have not been applied to this dataset.
