M*CH*MORE One Name Study
Tree 17. Descendants of Philip MICHELMORE (Buckfastleigh 170x)
This tree may have descended from Tree 16. A discussion of possible links between the various Buckfastleigh
trees and subtrees is available on the web site.
This is arguably the wealthiest M*CH*MORE tree. The earliest known members of this tree lived in country
houses and often farmed substantial estates, gradually spreading outwards from Buckfastleigh to occupy
estates in Staverton, Ashburton, Broadhempston, Berry Pomeroy and Ashprington. They were
churchwardens, their daughters married stewards of the great houses owned by the aristocracy, they had
their portraits painted, and their memorials were erected in their churches. In the 19th century, they sent
their sons to boarding schools and many of them became solicitors, settling up practises in Totnes, Newton
Abbot, Exeter that still exist today. They were also prominent in public life, with Jeffery John 0365 and his
son Alfred 0425 becoming mayors of Totnes, and Henry William 0308 and his son William Godwin 0832
mayors of Exeter
A summary of the several solicitor firms and land agencies founded by members of this tree is available on
the web site.
The first man to leave Devon was Charles Frederick 0127, who spent some time in London in 1850-1851 and
had returned to live there permanently by 1871, and his brother Henry, who emigrated to Canada in 1861
but had returned by 1865. Jeffery Edwards 1820 and his brother Philip 1051 both moved to London in the
early 1880s, and Charles Stuart 2483 moved to Bath in the 1880 and then to Wales in the 1900s. Several
emigrated to Australia: Charles 0127’s wife Sophia and three of her children went to New South Wales in
1876 and the brothers John Alfred 0410, William Trevoso 0467 and Ernest Pitts 1471 moved to Queensland
between 1886 and 1893. Also, Thomas Wilson 2362 moved to New York in 1894 and Mary Kate 0267
emigrated to Canada about 1940.
