           1. A Message from the Principal

Thank you for making the decision to join our family, that is the Hastings Valley
Community of Schools. I hope that we have been able to develop your child since
they joined us in kindergarten, and that we continue with the excellent work already
done by our primary schools. If you are enrolling your child from another school in
the district, another part of the state, country or world, we welcome you and thank you
for making the right decision, that is, to enrol your child in a public school. I trust that
your stay with us will be a rewarding experience and one that will lay the foundations
for your future academically, culturally, socially and in terms of sporting
opportunities.

Each and every one of us is a unique individual with talents and skills. It is the role of
our school to foster and develop those skills and talents. Each student is a valued
young person and this school aims to develop all students to become responsible and
active participants in the local community.

You will find that the school’s aims of caring (about others), learning (together) and
striving (for excellence) are strongly pursued. In return we ask of all of our students
to try to do their best in everything they do whether it be in the classroom, on stage or
in the area of music, art or on the sporting field.

Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8) completes many of the mandatory requirements for the award
of a School Certificate in such subjects as Music, Language, Art and Design &
Technology. In 2008 an interest elective subject has been introduced for Year 8. In
Term 3 of Year 8, students will elect two additional courses for study in Years 9 and
10. For this reason, the importance of an individual’s ongoing application to their
studies cannot be overlooked.

At times young people need advice and support. This school has a reputation for the
support it can offer whether it be from the Year Advisor, School Counsellor, members
of the welfare team or Careers Advisor.

ASSEMBLIES
Weekly assemblies are held in the main quadrangle on Wednesday 9.05 am. Each term,
except Term 1 students will have a Year Assembly, where students perform, present
items and are rewarded for achievement. Special whole school assemblies are held to
mark special occasions. Some special assemblies are called in the Multi Purpose Centre to
recognise student achievement or to mark special occasions such as Anzac Day. etc.


ATTENDANCE
It is the Board of Studies requirement that students maintain a satisfactory record of
attendance in order to be eligible for the award of both the School Certificate and the
Higher School Certificate. Parents will be advised at the end of each term where students
are identified to be at risk in terms of attendance.

It is also a legal requirement that, when a student is absent, a note stating the reason for
the absence must be provided by the parent or legal guardian. This note, including the
student’s name, roll group, date of absence and signature of the parent / guardian,
should be handed in on the day on which the student returns to school. If a note is not
provided after seven days, the absence will be recorded as unexplained. If it is anticipated
that an absence is to be more than two or three days, the school should be advised.
Otherwise, after three (3) consecutive days absence, a standard departmental letter of
concern will be sent home. Unexplained absences and absences with unsatisfactory
explanation will be recorded on the pupil’s next report. Unjustified lateness is considered
to be a partial unexplained absence. Students should arrive at school in time for roll call.

All students who arrive late to school will be issued with a lunch detention if a note from
home is not handed to the Head Teacher at the front gate. Students who must attend
appointments during the school day must obtain a leave pass from the Head Teacher
Administration before going to class. All students are encouraged to minimise absences
for this reason.

If any student has a medical condition that may require special consideration, parents are
asked to please inform the Year Adviser. Teachers involved with the student can then be
discreetly informed.

BELL RINGING
Bells rung in the school indicate the following:-
1 bell - the commencement and / or completion of a lesson
3 bells - students to assemble in the main quadrangle

                         BUS CONVEYANCE
                         Pupils, to be eligible for free travel to school, must reside
                         outside a 2 kilometre radius from the school. This free travel is
                         a privilege provided by the Government. Misconduct on buses
                         or vandalism may cause the bus proprietor to refuse to carry a
                         student on the bus. This policy is firmly supported by the
                         School. A NEW APPLICATION IS REQUIRED TO BE
COMPLETED WHEN A PUPIL CHANGES SCHOOL OR CHANGES ADDRESS.
Therefore all new enrolments to the High school, who are eligible for free bus
conveyance, will be required to fill in a new form. Application forms are available at the
school office and until they are signed by the parent and handed to the school for
confirmation, the student is not entitled to free travel. It is bus company policy that
should a student lose a bus pass a fee will be charged for its replacement.

CALCULATORS
Students of Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 require a specific calculator (trigonometric functions,
logarithm functions, statistics mode, etc) preferably one which handles fractions. To
comply with School Certificate and Higher School certificate rules, the calculator must be
battery or solar powered, non programmable and silent in operation. Approved
calculators are available for purchase at the school canteen.

In years 7 and 8 we recommend student purchase the above mentioned calculator in
preparation for their school certificate.

CANTEEN
                 The school canteen provides lunches, stationery and school
                 requirements. The canteen is operated by voluntary helpers with profits
                 going to the school. It is in this way that some attempts can be made to
                 keep school costs to a minimum. Your assistance as a voluntary worker,
                 once a month is most welcome. Every offer of help lightens the load
for all those who assist in the canteen. Mrs Rose Bivona, the Canteen Manageress, can be
contacted on the canteen’s direct line 65833794.

CAR PASS
Senior students, who hold a driver’s licence, may be issued with a “Car Pass” by the
Head Teacher - Administration. This pass is issued to driver provided the parent signs
the appropriate form. Up to 3 passengers may be carried as long as the driver’s and the
passengers parents approve, in writing, in advance. Passengers may be brought to and
from school, but not taken out of the grounds at lunch time. Car pass regulations are
made in the interest of the safety of those young people who travel to and from school
by car.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS
Any student changing address should notify that change to the school office as soon as
possible so that records may be kept up to date. This is particularly important in cases of
emergency and official communication.

COMMUNICATION
During roll call each day, the “Port Daily” news bulletin is read which
informs students and teacher of activities planned for that day eg.
assemblies, excursion, meetings or practices and notifies of coming events,
lost items, students to report to the Deputy, etc.

Each week the school produces a Newsletter (Port High News). It is
published each Friday except for the last week of each term. It is
distributed via email so it is essential that parents and caregivers keep the school
informed of their email address. For students who do not have access to a home
computer the newsletter is available at the front office, the canteen and the Munster
Street shopping complex. The newsletter is also posted on the school website.

Publicity concerning school activities and pupil achievements appears frequently in the
local paper and on the school noticeboard located at the front of the school.

A BLUE PHONE is situated in the corridor outside the Deputy Principal’s office and is
for the convenience of students who need to make essential calls. These should be kept
to a minimum duration of three minutes so that other students and staff may also use
this facility. Telephone calls may only be made during lesson breaks or before school,
recess, lunch or after school.

                    CURRICULUM – INFORMATION
                    Specific evenings are held prior to students choosing subjects. These
                    occur for students in Year 8  9, Year 10  11
                    Other events are organised whereby parents of the Year 11 and / or
                    12 gain information on career matters, the Higher School Certificate
                    and the University Admission Index.

At all of these events, parents and students are free to discuss any curriculum matters
with the staff.


EMERGENCY CONTACT
Each student needs an emergency telephone contact. Unforeseen accidents do occur and
we need to able to contact a parent / guardian in an emergency.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURE
1.  Signal is a siren and should the power fail a hand bell will be rung.
2.  If evacuation is necessary classes will follow the teachers instruction as posted in
    each classroom to assemble on the hockey field. Students will assemble in roll
    class groups as directed.
3.  If a fierce wind or hail storm occurs – students will be directed to sit on the class
    room floor away from threatened windows.

EXAMINATIONS, ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
Port Macquarie High School retains half-yearly and yearly examinations in all subjects in
Year 11 and 12 and in Year 9 and 10. Reports are based upon homework, assignments,
oral participation, spelling, pupil attitude, testing etc. Years 7 and 8, although they do not
sit for full-scale examinations, are judged on all the above forms of assessment. A
favourable report usually follows consistent effort throughout the year.

Reports are issued each June and December detailing performance, attitude and
attendance. Progress reports are available at any stage during the student’s schooling by
contacting the Student Adviser. A progress report, which may be initiated by parent or
teacher, has been developed to indicate to parents when the student is not working to the
appropriate standard and allows for remedial action to be taken.

The school believes in the principle of homework or study and the statement “I have no
homework tonight” will rarely be true. It is difficult to indicate how much homework
will be set as this will depend upon the student’s year, the standard of the group and
whether the subject is a practical one or not. Each student should have a homework
                                             diary.

                                                The most useful homework a student can
                                                undertake, apart from that which is
                                                actually set, is to read over work done in
                                                class each day. Suggested overall times
                                                which pupils can reasonably be expected
                                                to spend on homework during week
                                                nights are as follows:
                Year 7 – 1 hour          Year 10 – 2.25 hours
                Year 8 – 1.5 hours       Years 11 and 12 no more than 3 hours
                Year 9 – 2 hours

EXCURSIONS
These days, not all education is conducted in the classroom and
excursions are organised to provide the practical side of a course. As far
as possible excursions are kept to a minimum and many are confined to
local areas. When an excursion is organised parents will receive an
excursion note from the school seeking permission for their child to
participate and giving details of costs, times etc.

As there are some occasions when numbers are restricted because of
accommodation, payment should be made as soon as possible after
receiving the excursion note.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
There are many specialist persons besides individual classroom teachers
who are available to both parents and students to assist with advice and help of both a
personal and educational nature. These people are available for individual counselling at
any time. It would be advisable to ring and make an appointment when seeking
interviews.

Year Advisers: A member of staff is appointed to each year as an adviser. This teacher
usually has the special care of the students for the whole of their six years at high school.
His / her role is essentially one of pastoral coordination, not of discipline. The student
adviser is the parents’ first point of contact in the school when seeking information and
help. Parents are welcome to contact the advisers at any time, but as they still have a full
teaching load, it is advisable to phone the office to arrange a suitable time.

Head Teacher (Welfare): (Mrs Jo Timmins)
The Head Teacher is available to students who want to discuss
concerns of a school or personal nature. The Head Teacher Welfare
initiates and manages special programs in the school that supplement
classroom and extra curricular activities.

The Head Teacher Welfare coordinates the welfare team in the
school. This team consists of Student Advisers, School Counsellors, Deputy Principal,
support teachers and interested staff. These members meet regularly to assess student
needs and design new programs.

Careers Adviser: (Mr Bruce McCarthy).
The Careers Adviser can provide assistance to students with matters pertaining to their
career planning, subject selection, tertiary preparation and applications for employment.

Students are able to see the school careers adviser at recess, lunchtime or during class
time, the latter in consultation with their teacher. Parents are also able to make an
appointment with the careers adviser. Resources used in career planning are available for
use at school and many may be borrowed by students.

School Counsellors: (Ms Dawn Dockrill, Ms Ursula Schwarz)
Two school counsellors are available to the school to provide assistance to staff and
students. Parents are invited to contact the counsellors for appointments whenever
necessary. If a student has a problem about school, friends or home and would like to
talk to someone, confidentially, an appointment can be made with the Counsellors or a
message can be slipped under the door. Counsellors’ office is located in A block.

ILLNESS
School facilities for caring for sick students are very limited.
Parents are requested to keep children who are sick, at home
and provide them with a note on the FIRST day of their return
to school. Should a student become ill at school or be
accidentally hurt, every effort will be made to contact the
parents.

A student who feels sick at school must not report to the sick
bay until they first obtain a note from the teacher whose class they would normally be in.
They must take this note to the Front Office where a member of the staff will either
arrange for them to go home or to lie down in Sick Bay.

When parents pick up their children from sick bay they must sign the students out and
must have legal guardianship of the child.

JEWELLERY
Makeup and jewellery should be kept to a minimum and ear rings in pierced ears should
be small in the interests of safety. This is a requirement under Occupational Health and
Safety and applies to all students. Parents are asked to see that the policy is observed
before the students leave home.

           LIBRARY
           Our school has an “open” library system. Classes do not have set library periods –
           teachers book them in as the need arises, or send individuals from class to do research.
           Seniors may choose to use the library for research in their non timetabled
           periods.

           Hours 8.30 am – 3.30 pm including recess and lunch breaks.
           Borrowing: Items may be borrowed for a period of 2 weeks.
           MOBILE PHONES & OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
           The use of mobile phones and music listening devices (such as MP3 players and I-Pods)
           by students are to be limited to before and after school. Students bringing these devices
           to school must leave them in their bags all day (mobile phones may be left with the
           relevant Deputy Principal before 9am and collected at 3.30pm) If those devices are seen
           by a teacher during the day, students will be sent to the Deputy Principal and the student
           will return with a note from Deputy Principal confirming confiscation. If they are seen a
           second time then parents will be asked to collect the devices from the Principal.

           PARENT / TEACHER MEETINGS
           Special Parent / Teacher meetings are generally held after the issue of reports. These give
           the parents an opportunity to interview their child’s teachers, discuss the report and the
           child’s attitude and progress. Teachers are asked to speak frankly and to offer
           constructive advice and comments, parents are asked to welcome these comments in the
           spirit of cooperation in which they are given.

           In Semester 1, parent/teacher meetings also occur for Years 11 and 12 (to discuss
           student progress) and Term 1 Year 7 parents re adjustment to high school.

           Appointment times for these interviews are organised by students and staff. Bookings
           avoid delays in getting to see the staff. Please be aware that interviews
           should be short allowing all parents access to teachers.

           If parents desire interviews with staff at any other time during the year,
           appointments may be made, through the office, with the Student Adviser
           or Head Teacher of the faculty concerned.

PARENTS AND CITIZENS ASSOCIATION
The P & C Association meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the
staff common room. It is at these meetings that parents are informed of the school
activities or guest speakers are provided. If you have suggestions concerning the welfare
of students at the school, this is the place to make your views known. Involvement in the
activities of the school is welcomed and parents and interested persons are encouraged to
participate whenever possible.

PEER SUPPORT
A peer support program called Quantum Leap operates for Year 7 during first semester
each year to assist them to make the transition from primary to secondary school. Year
10 students are trained as leaders and work with the incoming Year 7 students in a
specially developed set of activities, with particular emphasis on independent learning.
Peer support helps all students to become involved in the friendships and experiences
which add to a full school life.

SCHOOL COUNCIL
The council is made up of our parent members, four staff members, two students, two
community representatives, the president of the P & C and the Principal. The council
considers such matters as school goals, finances and the curriculum.

SPORT
Sport is a compulsory part of the curriculum for years 7 to 10.

Year 7 sport will concentrate on skill development for Terms 1 - 3. Then in Term 4 Year
7 students will be able to choose a sport. Some sports cost more than others due to bus
fees and entry/games fees please speak to your child about this before they choose their
sport.

The range of sports on offer to years 9 - 11 is wide and varied, depending upon the time
of the year. Students choose a new sport every term with each year groups rotating for
first choice. The sports offered are listed below. Many knockout teams use this time for
training.

Permission notes are required for any student leaving the school grounds. Some sports
such as surfing require special permission notes.

Port Macquarie High School enters most State knockout competitions providing many
opportunities for juniors and seniors to represent the school. In terms of the major
carnivals of swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. Port High finishes near the top of
the Regional point scores in each carnival.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
At Port Macquarie High School, the SRC is made up of four students elected by each
year group in the school to act as representatives on the student council. This body then
elects, from its members, a President, Vice President and Secretary. The staff have
representatives assisting the council. The SRC form a roll call group and discusses
concerns of the student body and if felt necessary, conveys these concerns and any
resulting recommendations to the Principal.

The SRC elects two student representatives to the School Council

The SRC has a suggestion box in the library and a noticeboard near the canteen to allow
feedback from students to be displayed. Each year, the SRC holds a Planning Day to
establish goals for the following year.

SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL
Students and parents need to be aware that no playground duty roster for teachers is
organised before school and after 3.30 pm.

UNIFORM
The School Code of Conduct requires students to wear school uniform. This policy
reflects the wishes of the P & C Association. Pride in personal appearance and
identification with the school group goes a long way towards developing a sound school
tone. All garments should be labelled with the student’s name to facilitate identification if
mislaid. Any student inappropriately attired will be sent to Mrs Hehir immediately to
change. Parents are asked to see that this policy is observed before the students leave
home.

Students in Years 7 – 10 are required to wear full sports uniform all day on Wednesday.

Clothing Pool
Our school has a range of uniforms in the clothing pool in excellent condition. These
are available for purchase at a minimum cost. Mrs Hehir, Library Assistant, is available
to handle any queries.

Years 7 & 8 Technology and Years 9 – 12 Food Technology
Apron (available from Ms Davie, Home Economics Faculty, the cost is $5.50 paid at
front office), leather or vinyl covered in shoes, tea towel, container are required for
practical lessons.
Hospitality years 11 and 12
Students require a full chefs uniform for all practical lessons. Available at Cooks Nook
or Cooks Concept. Black skirt or trousers and white shirt are required for Food and
Beverage. Work Placement and TAFE excursion.
Industrial Arts Technology – Boys and Girls
Protective clothing will be required for these electives and further information can be
obtained from the Industrial Arts teachers. Protective footwear is essential where
students are involved with the use of knives, chisels and other tools. Departmental
regulations make it necessary to exclude from practical lessons, students whose footwear
does not have a strong leather upper.

JUNIOR GIRLS YEARS 7 TO 10
Summer
Royal blue and navy check skirt or navy blue basketball shorts with a blue polo school
shirt. Short white socks or dark stockings and black cover in shoes with leather uppers.
Winter
Royal blue and navy check skirt or a plain navy tracksuit with school logo, school
microfibre track suit or navy school sloppy joe and tailored navy trousers (not jeans) to
be worn with a blue polo school shirt.
SPORT / PHYSICAL EDUCATION – All School
Plain navy basketball shorts with navy school P.E. T-shirt with white trim. White socks
and joggers. Micro fibre navy blue school tracksuit available from school uniform shop.
SENIOR GIRLS – YEARS 11 and 12
Summer / Winter
Senior grey skirt or navy basketball shorts. Plain white collared blouse with short sleeves.
White socks and black shoes with leather uppers. A school tie is optional.
Winter: Refer to information booklet.

Sports
Navy basketball shorts. Navy shirt with white trim, short white socks and joggers.

JUNIOR BOYS – YEARS 7 to 10

Summer
Plain grey shorts (not jeans), blue polo school shirt with emblem, grey or white socks.
Black shoes with leather uppers.

Winter

boys grey shorts are available at several men’s or sport stores in Port Macquarie. The
shop is located in the Multi Purpose Centre. Uniform shop hours are : Refer to
information booklet.

           VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS AND FEES
The school endeavours to provide the best education for its students. However,
Government grants provided to assist with text books, equipment, maintenance and
Special Education fall short of the school’s needs.

Many items have to be purchased from funds raised by the school and the P&C,
including library books, magazines subscriptions, duplicating paper, first aid needs,
gardening and grounds equipment, office supplies, general maintenance items, sporting
equipment and computers. Voluntary contributions charged by the school contribute
towards the provision of these essential services and equipment for your children.

Voluntary Contributions, which includes membership of the P & C Association are:

               2009    All years        $25.00 per term for the first student in the family
                                        $20.00 per term to the second and each
                                        subsequent child presently attending this high
                                        school

Should any family feel that they are unable to pay this contribution per term, alternatively
this can be paid in instalments of fortnightly or monthly.

Elective Course Fees
Some subjects carry specific fees to cover the cost of materials purchased on behalf of
the students and used directly by them. Hence, should it be felt that these fees cannot be
met, then an alternative subject should be chosen. These fees are listed in the various
“Program of Studies” booklets produced for each year.

All Contributions and fees are payable at the School Office where cash register
receipts will be issued. These need to be shown to course teachers to verify payment
so that tuition may be continued.
Eftpos facilities are available through the school office.
Credit Card payments from Mastercard, Visa or Bankcard are available through the
school office and can also be paid over the phone by calling 65 83 1844.

                               ATTENDANCE POLICY
Legal Requirements: - Student Attendance
Students between the ages of 6 and 15 are required to attend school by law. They are
allowed to be absent from school due to illness, incapacitation, or if they accompany
their parents or caregivers for a legitimate reason.

General Procedures:
        The administration office will produce a list each day by 10.30, which is
         distributed by the duty student informing staff of all absentees.
        SMS text messaging to parents mobiles when a student is absent each day.
         Happens around 11am each day providing permission has been given by
         parents.
        Students who are present but will be absent from class (those on excursions,
         representing the school at sport etc) will be deleted from the absentee sheet by
         the front office.

Examinations:
        Years 7,8,9 and 10 will attend roll call as usual during examination periods.
        Years 11 and 12 will only attend school when they have examinations.
        Years 11 and 12 will be marked present for the duration of the examinations
         unless they fail to present for a particular examination.
        Students will need to “make-up” lost examinations and will need to refer to
         the various Assessment Requirements booklets, which they were issued with
         at the start of the year in Years 9,10,11 and 12.

Leave Passes:
        Students who have appointments to keep or for other legitimate reasons may
         leave the school grounds during the day provided they have a note provided by
         their parents or caregivers, which has been presented to the Head Teacher
         (Administration) before the start of the school day.
        Students will be issued with a pass that states name, date, time and reason. The
         student must then present the pass to the class teachers if they leave class or
         are challenged by teachers on supervision.
        Students must on return sign in through the front office by placing the time
         they returned on the leave pass they were given.

Lunch Passes:
        Lunch passes are not an option for Year 7 students.

Sport:
        Sport rolls will be organised by the sports organisers
        Students marked present at sport are under the care of the supervising teachers.
        Truancy from sport will be followed up by the sports organisers
        Repeat offenders will be placed on an afternoon detention and could find
         themselves ineligible for the award of a School Certificate

                                DISCIPLINE POLICY

COMMENTS
Students and staff have the right to feel safe and to learn at Port Macquarie High.
Teachers will support students in these endeavours. The staff has the right to feel safe
and able to teach without being harassed, verbally abused or intimidated.

Port Macquarie High School’s discipline code is based on the 6 Aussie Fair Rules. These
rules form the basis for student behaviour in the school.

The school subscribes to the belief that students are responsible for their own self-
discipline and need to understand that there are consequences for their actions and
decisions that they may make.

6 Aussie Fair Rules:
   1.     I can listen
   2.     I can be on time and prepared
   3.     I can follow instructions
   4.     I can work and let others work
   5.     I know how to ask for help
   6.     I can respect others by controlling what I say and do.

Staff members may refer a student to their Head Teacher after initial action has failed to
resolve the issue. Faculty Head Teachers handle classroom referrals and the Head
Teacher on duty handles playground referrals.

When a referral is made, the staff member completes the top of a Referral Form. The
teacher includes action already taken to deal with the situation. The teacher may choose
to pass on the referral for information only or for action to be taken. If, for information
only, the teacher strips and distributes the referral.

If the referral is passed on complete, the Head Teacher then completes the Action
section of the form or counsels the teacher on alternate strategies that may be
appropriate. The Head Teacher then ensures copies of the referral go into the pigeon
holes of the Year Adviser (white) and Deputy Principal (green). A copy is returned to
the referring teacher and filed in the faculty records.

There will be occasions when the referral requires action by the Deputy Principal. If the
Head Teacher considers this appropriate he/she will forward the referral form intact to
that Deputy Principal. The Deputy will decide what action is required and then ensure
distribution of the Incident Referral. The Deputy may refer the student back to the
Head Teacher if he/she feels action at that level is more appropriate.

A referral will be issued for: - bullying, eating in class/littering, calling/yelling out,
lateness/truancy, throwing objects, unacceptable language, persistent disobedience,
threaten staff or students, being without equipment, fail to complete work/homework,
refuse to follow instructions, scuffle/fight, behaviour dangerous to others.

Students will expect to complete a detention with their class teacher if they have a
referral.

Head Teachers will raise concerns re the follow up / behaviour of particular students at
executive meetings.

Year Advisers will discuss ways to support students and their behaviour management at
their fortnightly meetings. Year Advisers are available for general feedback. On staff or
parent request Year Advisers can initiate a Progress Report.

Names of Students placed on stages will be published daily by the Deputy Principal on
the attendance sheet. It is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure students on Stages are
not permitted to class without a progress sheet. Students who try to do so should be
sent to the appropriate Deputy or nearest Head Teacher for their Progress Sheet. They
will do detention as a result of non-collection unless there is a reasonable reason.

Consequence to Students:
Students who have failed to follow any of the 6 Aussie Fair Rules in the classroom or
playground will face the consequences of the discipline system outlined below.

Students who have a partial or full day truancy will be placed on a school detention and
repeat offenders will have their attendance monitored by the Head Teacher
Administration.

Students who are caught smoking will have a letter sent home and be placed on an
afternoon detention. They may be issued with and required to complete an Anti-
Smoking booklet.

Students who go off site before school, at recess or lunch will be placed on a school
detention.

Students who are out of uniform on any day should carry a pass issued at roll call or by
class teachers during the day. Head Teachers assigned to roll groups will issue school
lunch detentions. Students who persistently fail to wear correct uniform without
explanation will have a letter sent home and may be placed on Stage 1.

Students who fail to attend a detention with their class teacher will be referred to the
relevant Head Teacher and will complete a longer detention.

After School Detentions

After school detentions run on Tuesday afternoon 2.40 – 3.30pm and Thursday
afternoon 3.30 – 4.30pm.

A detention notice that includes a reply slip notifies parents of students on after school
detentions in writing, in advance.

Students are placed on after school detentions by either the Head Teacher
(Administration) for persistent truancy, or by the Deputy for: -

   a POOR on Stage 1 or Stage 2
   failure to attend lunch A20 detention
   other serious incidents

Students on after school detention must report promptly to the Deputy Principal at 3.30,
where they will be allocated a supervising teacher/s and a classroom.

Students may bring work to do or a book to read but this is not compulsory. If the
detention is in the Library, students are not allowed to use the computers or look for
books. Staff may provide students with reading material or other work.

Students will sit in a seat allocated by the teacher and have their names marked off the
detention folder.

Any student who fails to follow these rules will be referred to the Deputy Principal to
either redo the detention or be placed on Stage 3 (isolation) or Stage 4 (suspension).

The after school detention is supervised by a volunteer roster. Where requested, staff will
be rostered in pairs.

This roster is published on the on line school calendar and Blue Star.
Students will be informed of the rules for the detention.

Students are not allowed to speak or communicate with other students.

Students are not allowed to eat or drink.

If a student has an urgent question they must raise their hand and wait.

Any student needing to go to the toilet during the detention will be noted in the
detention folder.

Any student who fails to follow these rules will be referred to the Deputy Principal to
either redo the detention or be place on Stage 3 (isolation) or Stage 4 (suspension).


                             ANTI BULLYING POLICY

As a school community we will not allow bullying to go unreported.

This requires students to:
 refuse to be involved in any bullying situation. If you are present when bullying
   occurs:
 if appropriate, take some form of preventative action
 report the incident or suspected incident and help break down the code of secrecy.
The school recommends that parents:
 watch for signs of distress in your son / daughter / ward, eg unwillingness to attend
   school, a pattern of headaches, missing equipment, request for extra money, damaged
   clothes or bruising.
 take an active interest in your son / daughter / ward’s social?
 advise your son / daughter / ward to tell a staff member about the incident. If
   possible, allow him / her to report and deal with the problem him / herself. He / she
   can gain much respect through taking the initiative and dealing with the problem
   without parental involvement.
 inform the school if bullying is suspected.
 keep a written record (who, what, when, where, why, how).
 do not encourage your son / daughter / ward to retaliate.
 communicate with your son / daughter / ward that parental involvement, if
   necessary, is appropriate.
 be willing to attend interviews at school if your son / daughter / ward is involved in
   any bullying incident.
 be willing to inform the Deputy Principal of any cases of suspected bullying even if
   your son / daughter / ward is not directly affected.

Staff will:
 be role models at all times
 watch for suspected incidents of bullying
 minimise opportunities for bullying wherever possible.
 help victims without placing them at further risk.
 act on suspected incidents in the appropriate manner, using the school’s anti bullying.

Guidelines for implementation of our anti bullying policy.
 The school curriculum will include units of work about anti bullying strategies.
 Close supervision will be provided where aggressive behaviour is likely to occur.
   Teachers will recognise their influence as role models.
 Specific strategies will be developed to address the different needs of victims and
   bullies, as well as bystanders.

Consequences of bullying.

All complaints about physical bullying will be dealt with directly by the Deputy Principal.
 Each time a referral is written for bullying the person who bullies will have their
    name recorded on the student database.
 Two referrals within two months will result in after school detention and an
    interview with the Deputy Principal. Parents will be advised by letter.
 Three referrals within two months will result in after school detention, withdrawal of
    privileges such as excursions, sporting representation and cultural activities for six
    weeks. Parents will be required to attend an interview at school.
 More than three referrals within two months will result in an interview with the
    Principal, possible suspension and / or in school isolation. Parents will be required to
    attend an interview with the Principal. Before returning to school after suspension,
    an individual transition program will be agreed upon by the student, parents and the
    school.

                             MEDICATION POLICY
For students who need to take medication at school.

SHORT TERM: - eg. Antibiotics
  1. The Year Adviser should be notified in writing.
  2. If the family is happy, the student should bring the required medication to school
     and take it at the appropriate time.
  3. If at all possible the medication times should coincide with recess / lunch.
     Alternate arrangements can be made and requests should be included in the letter
     above.

LONG TERM:- EG. Medication for ongoing medical conditions.
  1. The school needs notification in writing. There is a proforma to be completed by
     the doctor. This information will be distributed to appropriate Year Advisers and
     Deputy Principals.
  2. Medication can be kept at the front office only after parents complete the
     indemnity. Medication must be clearly labelled with the student’s name, dose and
     time as per the Doctor’s letter above.
  3. The student is responsible for collecting and taking the prescribed medication at
     the set time.

ENGLISH

Students are provided with opportunities to develop their personal competence in oral
and written language in a wide range of contexts such as personal expression,
literature, the mass media and everyday expression.

Because classes have a mixture of students, teachers encourage them to read and view
materials appropriate to their interests and abilities. Assessment is always in terms of
the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Elective opportunities are available within English for students to pursue areas of
interest, including creative writing, film and video.

Some of the themes used to encourage
interest and activity are: Alone; Heroes and Villains;
The Pop Group An Imaginary Island; Horrors; Fights and Conflicts; Accidents; and Survival.




MATHEMATICS

Mathematics in Years 7 and 8 is a single course leading to courses in Years 9 and 10.
It is presented in six strands:

Mathematically Geometry                                  Statistics                    and
                                                                                       Algebra

Students are banded in Year 7 and then graded on mathematical ability in year 8 and
placed in the appropriate class. Each class covers the same course. However, the
depth of treatment and level of difficulty of the various topics are adjusted to suit the
ability level of each class. All students require a set of geometrical instruments (pair
of compasses, protractor, rule, set square) and a Scientific Calculator.

                                           Calculators are available from the school

                                           canteen      at a very competitive price and are

                                           appropriate for use right through to Year 12 and

  beyond. With proper care such calculators have an indefinite life span. Students are

  required to have a scientific calculator with them at all times.

SCIENCE

Science and technology affects everyone’s lives from the turning on the T.V; flying in

an aeroplane; using a computer or medical treatment in hospital.

                     Year 7 Science starts the student in learning about the world

                    around them in terms or motion, living organisms, chemical

                    reactions and our earth.

  Year 8 will extend the knowledge of work already started in Year 7. The areas of

  study will include a cross section of the science disciplines in order to cover the

  aims of the syllabus. Most of our topics relate to real world situations and draw on

  theory from each of the Science disciplines to analyse the topic issues. Stage 4

  science (Years 7 & 8) has a prescriptive Board of Studies Syllabus which is now

  examined in November by an external exam called ESSA (Essential Secondary

  Science Assessment). ESSA examines all work in 7 & 8 syllabi.

HISTORY

Year 7 History will look at questions like: What is History? Why do we study and

preserve our Heritage? And what may we learn from the study of our past? Students

will have the opportunity to trace their family tree and look at their immediate and

past history as well as to select people and / or historical sites to study from our

environment.

Topic options for detailed study include the Ancient Societies of Egypt, Greece and

Ancient Rome and Aboriginal society.

Year 8 History concentrates upon the medieval world, North American Indians and

the indigenous people of Australia and Southern Africa. Other studies may include the

Tudors, the Stuarts and the French Revolution. Students will also look at one

significant group, event or force which has helped shape the modern world.




GEOGRAPHY

Year 7 students learn about : What a Geographer is and what they do, the tools a

Geographer uses how to use those tools to investigate different environments.

They learn about

Our World,Geographical Research, World Heritage Sites and Global Environments

such as coasts, deserts, rainforests, mountains and wetlands and how humans interact

with these environments.

Year 8 students continue their study of global environments and communities and

then focus on Global change with emphasis on Globalisation and Global Inequalities.

The major global issues and the roles global organisations and the students themselves

as global citizens can take in mangaging these issues is a key area of Year 8 study.

MUSIC

Year 7 students learn to read and write basic notation. They will use both keyboard

and guitar for performing. Students will complete listening activities that have an

emphasis on the musical concepts as well as compose short pieces of music.

Year 8 students continue to learn musical notation. They will use both keyboard and

guitar for performance and there will be an emphasis on rock music. Students will

complete short composition tasks and listening activities that focus on the musical

VISUAL ARTS

A course which draws upon people, other living things, objects, places and spaces,

events, issues and theories as a point of reference to complete art works.

Various types of media are used in the following forms.

Drawings, Painting, 3-D Forms, Printmaking and Ceramics.

                                       looking at art works created by other artists.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT/HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The aim of the Year 7 and 8 PD/H/PE program is to develop students capacity to

enhance personal health and wellbeing, enjoy an active lifestyle, maximise movement

potential and advocate lifelong health and physical activity.

Four main strands are covered in both theory and

practical course components, including:

      Self and relationships
      Movement skill and performance
      Individual and community health
      Lifelong physical activity

A wide range of personal and community health issues are addressed, such as fitness,

nutrition, safety, drug use, road safety, child protection, HIV/AIDS and mental health.

Practical activities enable students to develop skills in games, dance, gymnastics,

athletics and swimming.

TECHNOLOGY (MANDATORY)

Technology (Mandatory) involves designing, producing and evaluating quality

solutions. These skills are developed through the completion of Design Projects.

Computer applications are an integral part of the Design Projects.

Students will complete a 4-8 Design Project over Years 7 and 8 within the TAS

Faculty (Home Economics and Industrial Arts). For each Design Project, students

will complete a design folio and produce a product or an environment or an

information and communication system.

Design Projects are developed from an Area of Study. These are: Built Environments,

Products, Information and Communications. Depending on the area of study, specific

Design Specifications and Technologies are also included in the project.
