When the Bough Breaks (Alex
Delaware, No. 1) by Jonathan
Kellerman
Perfect!
In the first Alex Delaware novel, Dr. Morton Handler practiced a strange
brand of psychiatry. Among his specialties were fraud, extortion,
and sexual manipulation. Handler paid for his sins when he was brutally
murdered in his luxurious Pacific Palisades apartment. The police have no
leads, but they do have one possible witness: seven-year-old Melody
Quinn.
Its psychologist Dr. Alex Delawares job to try to unlock the terrible
secret buried in Melodys memory. But as the sinister shadows in the girls
mind begin to take shape, Alex discovers that the mystery touches a
shocking incident in his own past.
This connection is only the beginning, a single link in a forty-year-old
conspiracy. And behind it lies an unspeakable evil that Alex Delaware
must expose before it claims another innocent victim: Melody Quinn.
Dr. Alex Delaware is living in a self-imposed exile. A young and bright
psychologist, Alex is successful but haunted by a case that hit a little too
close to home for him. In semi-retirement, he has no interest in returning
to his practice until his friend, homicide detective Milo Sturgis, asks him for
his help. An unorthodox and slightly twisted psychiatrist has been
murdered in his apartment along with his lover, a former patie nt. The only
possible witness is a seven year old girl who lives a very sad life along with
her mother in a one bedroom apartment in the same complex as the
deceased. When Alex makes some progress with the girl, he realizes that
there is much more than a dead man and his lover. Everything is
connected to the incident that ended his practice and left him emotionally
hampered. Will he be able to see this through, or will he be caught in the
web of lies that the people that are supposed to be his peers have spun?
It's not hard to see how this book spawned an entire series. Alex
Delaware and his companions are fascinating, compassionate, and utterly
human. I can't wait to pick up the next one.
