Name of Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition
Advantages:
• Good\Professional GUI (Graphical User Interface) – easier to use
• Gives the user the option to use the 64 bit or the 32 bit versions (giving flexibility depending on the computer
memory and speed).
• Could even use the Professional Edition and the only real difference is the look of it and having the Aero
facility on the display
• Excellent networking facilities and security features.
• Support from Microsoft not expiring soon.
• Very compatible with most legacy applications (Green screen and Database so none graphic looking) and
new Windows software including drivers for wireless adapters.

• Decent file management systems.
Disadvantages:
• Extremely costly and needs a fair amount of HDD space and system resources to be run smoothly.
• File system is still NTFS and decays rapidly with continued use making computer slow.
• Less susceptible to viruses than XP but still needs a strong Antivirus.

Advantages:
• Easy to use GUI interface
• Still the most widely used Operating System today,
• Supports a wide variety of applications and can perform almost any task.
• Familiar layout for MAGS Staff.

• Features decent networking and file management systems.



Disadvantages:
• Extremely easy to break into the system over the Internet if not secured correctly.
• Very susceptible to viruses.
• System itself takes up a great deal of HDD space.
• Support for this system expires in a few years.
• File system decays quickly and needs defragging regularly.

Name of Operating System: Linux\GNU
Advantages:
• Excellent file system uses journaling so no defragging is necessary.
• Excellent support from sponsor companies and the community.
• Supports a wide variety of software written specifically for the systems.
• Excellent networking tools and security features.
• Not very susceptible to virus attacks and extremely difficult to breach security.
• Very customisable such as files and folders.

• The GUI is separate from the system and if it crashes it can be rebooted without a loss to work.

Disadvantages:
• Not very popular and not all systems come with commercial support from sponsors.
• Although it supports a wide variety of software the most popular software advertised on the internet is
usually for Windows and does not work on Linux systems without tweaking.
• Often difficult to get used to if migrating from a Windows environment.

Name of Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6
Advantages:
• Extremely easy to use and supports a wide variety of commercial software;
•comes with support from Apple.
• Not targeted by virus attacks often.
• Excellent networking facilities.
• HSF+ file system doesn’t decay due to journaling so will not slow.

Disadvantages:
• Light on system resources.
• Extremely pricey if MAGS does not own a compatible Macintosh computer already
• the system only works on Apple hardware.
• The system is extremely vulnerable to hacking over the internet and on-site unless some extensive security
measures are taken.
• Will be replaced by a new OS X version within two years although support will continue.
